Wow ! What a beautiful G Train video ! What realism, incrediable landscaping, beautiful water and super bridges. You are indeed a Master Modeler ! Kudo's to you....
This layout actually belongs to a USAT G Scale Group member in California. It will be featured on the Garden Railway tour for the 2016 NGRC in California
Yes it would. The manufacturer might recommend a certain maintenance and cleaning oil for the track. Sounds like you could have a fantastic layout in the desert.
Absolutely Incredible!! Most aspiring video i've seen in awhile. I've always lived right no a train no matter where I move to. Unintended and yet they've fascinated all 24 years of my lifes! Thank you.
My comment was no matter what guage this engine is awesome including the lifesize version in scranton pa .by the way you have done an excellant job on your garden layout. Life long ho modeler of 55 years know my guages and steam engines
I live in Cheyenne Wyoming, where a Big Boy Locomotive is being fully restored, and yes I have seen it and touched it. It is sometimes hard to believe just how big it is. As for your layout, very well done, Bravo, Bravo!
I have been in this hobby for a little over 18 months and have spent over $25,000 on it and money well spent. I now I could sell it all and get back $22k easy. I have 8 engines and over 170 cars on a 15 AMP system, go to Jose Silva G Scale to check it out. This is a great hobby that will last longer than you in years. This is a nice detailed RR and gives me inspiration to try harder..... JJ
Received my MTH Gauge 1 Big Boy 4014 back from repair. Opened it up for the first time 4 months ago. Had to return it for repair 4 days later. I had to pay for the shipping for 60 lb.
This is simply magnificent. Great layout and a fantastic train. First rate. Well done! This has inspired me to build one in my back yard. I have the trains, track and equipment. It’s time to start the planning. I’ll post development videos. :)
Hi everyone, thanks for all your kind words regarding this video and my garden railway! I haven't been following along here and I'm shocked how many views, comments, and likes this video has received. Work on my railroad has slowed, but I've made a few improvements since this video was made. I still have a lot to do though! But I will try to take some new videos this summer, including a GoPro in the cab as has been suggested. I have also posted some photos from last summer during the 2016 NGRC to my Flickr account: www.flickr.com/photos/benjaminshell/sets/72157671208302715/
I received my MTH Big Boy 4014 a couple of weeks ago. I could not get the TIU to find the engine. I worked with MTH's tech for over a hour and a half. N/G. Sent it back to MTH. I had to pay freight. ONE thing- they packaged the engine a hard box with screws (engine) and wire ties (tender). All in a compartmented heavy box. It was a Bi_ch to repack. I received the engine back today. The head light was hanging loose. I found the screw. The screw that holds the lead truck is missing. The tender coupler broken. One of the tender marker lights missing. I set up my test track. I have power indicator lights at the end. I put the Big Boy on the test track. The newer engines electrically connect to tender with a plug mounted on the draw-bar. The tender pin (for drew-bar) is square. The pin is on a swivel. Another BI_CH to lineup. Then you have to press up the draw-bar to seat the plug. After many attempts it line up the draw-bar and engage the plug. Well the engine still is not Recognized by TIU. Again I put a GG-1 on the test track. Just like I did with the MTH Tech. The GG-1 works. What a waste of TIME AND MONEY. Will call MTH at 12:00 Tuesday 11/28/2017
I sent my 4-12-2 to them to get the motherboard replaced. I got brave and tapped into a circuit to power marker lights and overloaded a board circuit. They fixed it, but they set the flywheel air gap way off and the chuff was way out of sync with the drivers. Luckily that was the only thing, and easily corrected with an allen wrench on the flywheel setscrew.
Beautiful locomotive but the whistle has alot to be desired, hopefully since this video was shot the owner has converted to railpro with their far better sound quality.
There’s nothing but positive comments here and it’s understandable as that’s quite a set up. However, whenever first getting into the hobby there are quite a lot of options - pros and cons. I always appreciated forum comments that were also a wee critical that helped me decide best options for my preferences. Therefore, I must point out the sounds coming from this locomotive are far less inspiring than my Lionel Legacy O gauge locomotives that smoke, steam, and whistle beautifully. I much prefer a little smaller size with a lot more dazzling features. That said - a very cool video and layout.
There are Pros and Cons to everything. In the world of G Scale the manufacturers are light years behind O Scale in technology. I personally had G Scale for 15 years and then went back into O Scale. The G Scale community talk about this subject all of the time. You may not know this but there are 2 sound boards in that locomotive, one for each driver set. It also features 2 separate smoke units.
+maxrailroad All of the G Scale Track is made from either Brass, Stainless Steel or Aluminum. Bachmann did make cheap steel track which does rust and not meant for outdoors. Which type of track you choose depends on your budget. Stainless Steel is most expensive but less maintenance, Brass conducts better than stainless for track power but needs a annual light cleaning and Aluminum is cheapest if you are going battery power or live steam. Hope this helps.
Unfortunately many think that G Scale is that plastic battery powered set with plastic tracks in a store. G Scale also has some very expensive models as well with choices of Brass, Stainless and Aluminum Track. Check out my actual channel page for more G Scale action. I also have alot of Garden Railway Tour Videos to give you ideas. ruclips.net/p/PLtXVZf5HWWPIgMo6fsEowZoHhAPXUcmTd

Wowsers! You had to cut a hole in the fence for the train to fit through. I have an ho scale big boy and a challenger. How long is you big boy with the tender?
I'll be starting a G scale layout soon so I have a few questions I hope you can answer 😊 At about 2:40 in the video. The train is going over the cement wall. Did you have to somehow glue the track down, or anchor it in? Or did you simply just set the track on top and it's fine? Also one thing I'm concerned about is over usage and weathering, will the track connectors eventually start coming apart? Will I have to go put track pieces back together every now and again? Thanks for your time
I don't own this layout but the track seems to be just laying on top of the cement. Also if you do go forward with a garden layout I would go with Hillman's or Split Jaw Rail clamps which hold better than the original track joiners. Hope this helps
Yes, I agree. There's a little more scenery now, but not enough, and yes, I still need a water tower. I also see a a lot of potential. I'll try to make another video this year with all the latest updates.
Pie Pie This is a USA Trains G Scale Big Boy made entirely from die-cast metal with stainless steel side rods and real brass parts. Now that you know what it's made from, this one costs $4,000 plus shipping. It weighs in at 105lbs combined shipping. The locomotive and tender are shipped separately in wooden crates. Shipping is typically another $50 to $75 depending on where you live.
I've see the layout and it has nice wide curves and looks very real for that Big Boy. Question thro? Are the PFE. refers USA? I have two like them that I picked up at a swap meet and not sure the maker of them due to they having Kadees. I like to get more of them.
+Noel Wilson Yes the 40ft reefers are made by USA Trains. They made a special run of PFE 40ft ice reefers for the Big Boy which are sold by the 4 car pack. The reefers are all different road numbers

How do they keep the tracks from rusting ?
I am here in Morocco in the desert and it seldom rains would this track hold up in these conditions?
Yes it would. The manufacturer might recommend a certain maintenance and cleaning oil for the track. Sounds like you could have a fantastic layout in the desert.
Beautiful layout. Love the blue water in the stream
Absolutely Incredible!! Most aspiring video i've seen in awhile. I've always lived right no a train no matter where I move to. Unintended and yet they've fascinated all 24 years of my lifes! Thank you.
You are Welcome
Great looking layout. I love the wide radius curves, it makes the layout look that much more realistic. Thanks for sharing
My comment was no matter what guage this engine is awesome including the lifesize version in scranton pa .by the way you have done an excellant job on your garden layout. Life long ho modeler of 55 years know my guages and steam engines

Very beautifully designed railway line. I liked it
Super cool train

The Big Boy Locos may not be service any more. But this is indeed a great tribute to beast, who served us tirelessly.
Fantastic layout, and tolerant neighbours I hope!!!
Wow... no matter what scale this engine is awesome, steamtown scranton pa has a life size # 4012 on display
It is a G Gauge 1:29 scale in size. Weighs in at 75lbs because it is made entirely of die-cast metal
Beautiful... i Love The Water Feature..... Very Nice!
Man, what a great looking display!

Opened it up for the first time 4 months ago.
Had to return it for repair 4 days later.
I had to pay for the shipping for 60 lb.
Unfortunately it's no better for repairs in O Scale as far as MTH
That would be even better if you could add some steam/smoke coming out of the engine. Looks very realistic! Great job!

Not the first time I heard of horror repair stories about MTH service. Happens quite often in O gauge

Dakman Productions mds pensei que vc era do estados unidos quanto custo essa locomotiva ?
Fun!
Awesome video! Is that a special type of track that will not rust? Also, if you have a GoPro, a cab ride would be so cool!

I am not making a G scale layout, I was just curious, but thanks!
UP-4000, the original Big Boy.
epic
I'm not sure if it's just the video but the train looks like it's HO scale.
Its sure a neat setup especially the water areas where is this located at ? Very. Cool !!!!!
Good
wow is the best
Glad you like the video

Wowsers! You had to cut a hole in the fence for the train to fit through. I have an ho scale big boy and a challenger. How long is you big boy with the tender?
That's a nice set up, but why does the locomotive keep blowing the horn when it's not going over any grade crossings?
Depends on where you install reed switches for horn and bell activation. I don't think this one is fully remote.

Dakman Productions Yes it most definitely does, thank you
Wow how long is the layout. Looks like it goes Into to your neighbors yards too
Very nice engine but I didn't see a water tower? I see a lot of potential here. Would love to see future vids with scenery.
+david barrera This layout is still in progress of being built There should be improvements made just in time for the 2016 NGRC Tour in California
Yes, I agree. There's a little more scenery now, but not enough, and yes, I still need a water tower. I also see a a lot of potential. I'll try to make another video this year with all the latest updates.
Must have taken months to make that track 👍
Massive
whats the tightest radius this can take?
This is a USA Trains Big Boy and needs at least 16ft diameter curves however it is recommended to go the full 20ft diameter curves
Good 👍👍👍👍
Wow
It is a great looking loco and track. Are G scale big boys still available ? Watched this video at least 15 times. Ha ha really good
Yes the Big Boy locomotives are available from USA Trains in G Scale as long as you have $3800
Dakman Productions ouch!! This isn't cheep!
adrien choiniere no but it's all die cast metal. Also usa trains is coming out with the U.P. FEF 3 northern but that's next year.
Dakman Productions only 3800

My favourite is train I love super good

I know its a bit late but how much does the big boy train cost? My grandad loves trains so I think he might like this train.

AMAZING LAYOUT! Anymore information on it?
It belongs to a USAT G Scalr Group who lives in California. It was on a Garden Railroad Tour for 2018

i love cllasic train
In 1990 a Rivarossi Big Boy in HO scale cost me $539 AUD hate to think what a big boy in g scale costs now.
Get a go-pro and do a cab ride. Thanks.

Is the o scale bigger or is the g scale bigger?
Union Pacific 844 Fan o scale is 1:48. This is 1:29 scale.
Union Pacific 844 Fan G as G stands for Garden
Is that a TCS WOW Sound Decoder?
No, it's a QSI Titan using the Q3 articulated sounds.
