Thanks very much for your informative video! My only problem is that the batteries evidently failed when we had a cold spell. My chair was outside, in the van. Charger doesn’t even show the yellow light when I plug it in. They are dead & I can’t lift the chair to access the batteries easily. Will just have to do it with closer tolerances! Your video will be quite helpful!
it is possible to get the batteries out with the seat in the down position.. just takes some careful prying ton the overlapping plastic top cover to get the battery doors open :^)
Something about this dual battery setup with them on the sides and visible is badass. I am just not sure what it is. Makes it look more tank-like or tough, the strong lines make it look beastly. I love front wheel drive chairs and have a c300. What are the advantages of the c500 over the many previous c-line front wheel drive chairs?
The C500 was one of their earlier front wheel drive models.. back when they were built like a tank! They told the engineers to build the best possible product, then let the accountants figure out how to sell them.. the result: a heavy duty and HEAVY chair that keeps on going! The C300 was the next version where insurance companies got involved and had a lot of input about weight, and over-engineering.. the C300 is a lot more compact, and light weight - but doesn’t handle the same amount of abuse. I’ve worn out 2 of them in less than a year both times! But then again, I’m not a ‘normal’ user ;-)
Thanks so much! Bye the way, I have been given a 2015 c500 and it stopped working after I reclined it too clean it. the CP would light up with no error messages but it would no longer respond and now it says JSM Bad Cable. Any suggestions?
how far back did ya recline it? inside the seat back there's a bunch of wiring/connectors.. if tilted ALL the way back something might have gotten stressed.. also id check the wires running from the joystick, down the arm rest and into the seat back.. something somewhere got pinched, or came unplugged it sounds like
Do these take a group 24 or 34 battery? Also if both are dead on my chair can I swap one momentarily until I am able to move it and access the other side or does it need two good batteries to work? Its currently stuck in our modified car and I have easy access to the right side.
i replied to your other comment already - but both batteries need to be replaced as a set.. the chair operates on 24 volts, and both batteries are in series to accomplish that voltage. most C500 chairs work with group 34, or 24 batteries. ya also commented on a video with a C300 in it, so im not sure which chair you've got
@@TotallyNormal- yes thanks didn’t see this till afterwards I have the c500 which actually looks like a much more doable swap I may not have to push the chair. Also was curious if you knew where I could get one of those larger ball shaped joysticks for the permobil.
@@TotallyNormal- Appreciate it man.. just received my batteries as well and while they work they are about 3mm too tall. I ordered the group 24 off amazon because that was the fastest to arrive. Before I go ahead and order the 34s is there anything that can be done to accomodate the group 24? There is a metal lip that is stopping it from clearing it doesn't seem to be on the one's you worked on... was tempted to bend it but figured best to leave everything as is.
most wheelchair batteries are flat-tops.. that's required to fit the group 24's into a C500 chair.. MK power batteries cost a bit more, but have a much longer service life. ive tried a bunch of amazon batteries and had some of them crap out after only 3 months of use :^/
This chair I swapped out the motors for high speed ones from another c500 VS standing model. Think it may have been in a previous video.. lol I’ll have to find it! But this is the chair that I was working on calculating the speed in a few different vlogs. It’s got regular appearances on the books! Haha
uhhh aftermarket youll need to get 24 volt ones and connect them right to the batteries, and also add a switch.. or ya can use 12 volt ones but you'll need a power converter.. ive been saying im going to build and sell a portable lighting kit for like 6 months now.. but life keeps happening LOL soon.. soon hahah
on the C500 - the seating doesnt block the battery doors.. BUT it will be tricky to get them open without removing the top cover.. however it is possible to carefully pry them open.. if the chair has a seat lift - check out this video - ruclips.net/video/qQitPa9j2NM/видео.html the process is the same on the C500 for manually operating the seat lift. if the chair DOES NOT have a seat lift.. then you'll have to manually use the seat mounting tube- and raise the seating a bit (i can provide a service manual link if needed) most C500 chairs will fit either group 34 OR group 24 batteries without an issue (as long as theyre flat top group 24's - or are very carefully placed as to prevent the posts from shorting out on things - if not using flat-tops)
Thanks so much for your response. So this chair doesn’t seem to bring the really long tool in the back and when I open the seat it doesn’t look like the one in c300. I just had 4 holes down the middle. Is it possible to use a jack to lift it? I don’t understand how to manually use the tube to lift it.
hmmm sounds like an older model maybe... if the chair doesnt have a seat lift built in, then ya have to support the chair - people holding it up - or maybe a hoyer lift and some straps.. then loosen the bolt on the seat mount tube, and raise it up. if ya send a message on twitter i can send over the service manual
Yea my backup chair is an M300-HD and went to do a little maintenance on it and was horrified when I noticed the seat needs to come off to get the plastic cover removed. Needless to say, only the two outside brushes/ports got inspected/blown out.
c500 has the easiest battery replacement ive seen!! nothing better on monday morning.fresh brew and a video
...getting the world addicted to cold brew coffee, one comment at a time mmuuhahahaha!!!!
how about Bounder wheelchair?
bounder is even easier! push a switch, and the battery box slides right now!
I know, just picking on you, my man
What is we don’t have power to elevate the chair “out of the way” to access the batteries?
Thank you!
Awesome. I've been wanting to see a Permobil tear-down like this for a long time. Excellent peak inside. Thanks Dan.
I’ve got one for the C300 coming up too!

Thank you for the guidance, i just installed my new batteries on my c500 keep it up. :)

Next time on Totally Normal how to replace an electric wheelchair motor with a 69 Chevy engine
How about a small Honda 4stroke generator motor?? Haha I *may * have done that already at one point ;-)
@@TotallyNormal- sounds like a great project to get back into my friend! Lol
C500 battery replacement is lot easier than V6 frontier....
YES... on mine i have to remove the seating LOL
