  • Welcome to Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)with Chicago Flights!
The big fire you see in the background is the Chicago O'Hare Fire Rescue Team in training. Chicago Fire Department, O’Hare Regional Training Facility “Burn Pit” is on the north side of O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
They use a Large Frame Aircraft Trainer, a recent addition to the facility that is a cross between a Boeing 747 and an Airbus for their training. These fire trainings are very large to replicate an actual fire.
The FAA takes firefighting very seriously, so they mandate minimum requirements for the training of airport firefighters, including the certification of those who conduct this important training. They are some of the best-trained Fire Rescue Teams in the world.
The video was recorded approx. 3 miles from the training site. Smoke from this training can be seen for miles and miles in each direction.
Hopefully, we will never have to depend on the skills of these firefighters, but if we do, we can have complete confidence in their abilities. I wanted to capture that (DHL)Polar 747 as it was holding and waiting for clearance to cross. As it was holding, the large fire can be seen on the other side of it making it appear it was on fire. That fire is enormous. After all, aircrafts are enormous and training is conducted on a large scale airplane like pit to resemble an actual event.
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD, ICAO: KORD, FAA LID: ORD), typically referred to as Chicago O'Hare International Airport, O'Hare International Airport, O'Hare Airport, Chicago O'Hare, or simply O'Hare, is the main international airport serving Chicago, Illinois, located on the city's Northwest Side, approximately 17 miles (27 km) northwest of the Loop business district. Operated by the Chicago Department of Aviation and covering 7,627 acres (3,087 ha), O'Hare has non-stop flights to 242 destinations in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Oceania, and the North Atlantic region as of 2022. As of 2022, O'Hare is considered the world's most connected airport.

Used to watch planes come in and take off from my dad's kitchen window many years ago when he lived about 4 blocks from Rocky Mt. Arsenal. The north south runway was on the east side of the arsenal and you could hear the engines roaring coming down the runway to take off. Loved the sounds of them doing that @ Denver's Stapleton international Airport.

My friend, I regret to inform you that this is a conducted fire fighter training. They use the 767-300ER from American airlines. The one that had an engine fire at ORD upon takeoff. They conduct these drills weekly. I too, before used to think that it was actual fire.

    The Aviation Herald:
A United Boeing 737-900, registration N37413 performing flight UA-1930 from Chicago O'Hare,IL to Miami,FL (USA), was in the initial climb out of O'hare's runway 22L when the crew stopped the climb at about 3000 feet due to the left hand engine (CFM56) suffering a series of compressor stalls/surges emitting streaks of flame. The aircraft returned to Chicago for a safe landing on runway 27C about 8 minutes after departure.

Ah yes I remember that day. I did indeed see the smoke in the afternoon from the fire rescue team. I was on the west side waiting to get the Polar 747, but it went north to 27C and I missed it. At least I got the United Star Alliance livery 777-200. Also very cool to see the go around at 27C - it was shut down temporarily due to a burst tire or bird strike, I can’t remember which one exactly. There was an American 737 I saw that switched from 27C to 27R towards the last moment. It was pretty neat. Anyways, we had some great weather for spotting that day and I enjoyed the many great planes you caught. Thanks for sharing!

The video is great for every aviation fan. The plane used in the fire training (Polar / DHL) I've seen in Leipzig, Germany (LEJ) many times because there's one of Europe's biggest DHL Hubs. (They're flying above the house I lived in untill almost 2 months ago) In Leipzig they have a training facility (a plane dummy and some shipping containers for training in real conditions - most european and even asian airport fire crews go there for training)

I don't mind watching planes don't like to be in them lol. I know nada about them. What is the speed they have to be at to lift off? Also when do the tips of the wings go down?

      1) Typically between 130 - 160 kts
      2) No. Wingtip devices are fixed to provide efficiency and reduce drag.

Every time i think of O'Hare.....i remember the Memorial Day weekend in 1979.A good friend of mine was getting married on Saturday the 6th.....but we had just finished the practice run of the wedding....then i found out the next day....i was the best man because the original guy was held up out of state. So anyway i was just hired in at a pipe coating plant in NW Indiana. My first real job....and everything was good. After the practice run we all went back to my friends home in Merrillville,Indiana for some beers and to eat dinner. Then Flight 191 crashed on take off that afternoon and we watched the news the rest of the night.I was 21 years old and it was from that moment then....i said i would never fly.On anything....unless i was in control of it.That was May 5th 1979.So just over 20 years later.I purchased my first PC and was chatting on Yahoo Messenger with quite a few ladies. Thus i chatted with a woman who 20 years ago was about 12 when Flight 191 came down 300 feet from her parents mobile home near that runway. She was laying on her bed doing homework....when she heard just another jet taking off.The roaring of the engines she was used to by now.Though she hated being waked up at all hours of the night with the wirring straining engines....and then would mumble to her sleepy self.....i hate planes taking off at night. Then this one jet seemed way different.....it was straining and something wasn't right.....then the rumble of the ground shook her out of bed....and onto the floor. Her papers of homework were all over the place ,she was trying to get her homework done so she could hang out with friends the whole weekend. This is what she told me in about the fall of 1999.Now she was in her thirties.......and it was still hard to talk about.A matter of fact.....we said the heck with typing to eachother....so we talked on the phone about 6 times. And i felt at times that i was there seeing the many people fighting fires....searching.Her dad moved them into an apartment to get away......not because the plane had crashed....but all the eerie ghost stories that were haunting the whole areas

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. She really got lucky. Those trailer homes are still there. They do have a Flight191 memorial
site little over a mile east of the crash site off of Touhy. I visited it last year and also the crash site. So erie. Aviation so much safer now than back then, that's for sure.

@@chicagoflights Her parents mobile home was the first row in the middle....when her dad came home early from work, because of the crash was so close....she said...he said...the heat could be felt on your face in waves. There were also pcs. of the planes skin....brackets...hunks of everything close by...people were taking small pcs. as they lay on the ground in the court.I know she said a mobile home burnt down when fire from flaming jet parts landed on roofs......Scarey close.
