    My power steering pump in my 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue does the same thing, and it got replaced 2 years ago when the old system blew up and had a big puddle of sadness on my driveway.

    Is the AC compressor on the Caprice original? That's quite impressive that it's still hanging on.

      Ah, but the numbers tell a different story. Let's do a little ciphering.
      I have uploaded 973 videos, most of which are public. (Those that aren't have some special purpose.) I've been on RUclips for right around nine years as of this writing (wow). That's a new video uploaded approximately every three days, were the distribution to be equal. (Of course it isn't, since I have a life and obligations outside of RUclips. And sometimes I take a break.)
      Of course, videos just fly by if you are binge watching, which is something people have actually _done_ with my videos, though I will never really understand why. (Then again, I get tired of the same thing over and over again in the long term. I like to keep things varied.)

    Good to see another cold start video! We haven't had any problems this year (probably due to the fact the temperatures have never dropped below -5*C here in Scotland!) with either the 2000 Ford Focus 1.8 or my 1996 Peugeot 405 1.9 turbo diesel. That said, the latter did require new glow plugs in November when they all quit in unison and resulted in a non-starting engine regardless of temperature. Come to think of it, I can't remember any car in my lifetime that has not started in the cold weather, because having been born in 1995 all the vehicles I've known have been fuel injected. Our 1997 Ford Fiesta did put up a bit of a fight in 2010, but I think that was probably more of an electrical issue than anything else.

    Great presentation, and I like your philosophy about one brand vs another. Electronic FI is the way to go, but--like a carbureted car with points and condenser for ignition--it won't go if the battery is clapped out. When I had somewhere I had to be at o-dark-thirty one cold morning, I tried my daily-driver '00 Honda CR-V, and it wasn't having any of it, because the battery was long overdue for replacement. I got out of that car and thought "Oh what the hell!" and stepped over to my 1968 Kaiser Wagoneer with original everything in it, including the Holley 2209 carb and lousy Prestolite starter. I had kept the heap pretty well maintained, so there was a chance it would go. Against it was the temperature, and that the car hadn't been touched in 3 months. It took both my thumbs together to push the latch button on the door, and it sounded like pulling nails in demolition when I opened it. I slid in on a rock-hard naugahide seat, stuck the key in the slot, gave the gas pedal two or three taps to set the automatic choke and give it a squirt or two. I twisted that key, and it went through 3 rather slow compression strokes, and then scared the hell out of me by roaring to life and running at a fast idle without a misfire. I drove off on my errand, and was right on time. I wish I'd had my camcorder with me at the time. BTW, the temp was -25°F. Where I live 3°F is a heat wave.

    This winter has been brutal on my '97 Ranger. First thing to go was the leaf spring shackle, shortly after the u-joint, and then an axle seal, starter motor, battery and now the throw-out bearing is slowly destroying itself.

    I love seeing a 93 Caprice. I drive a 94 Caprice with a 383 stroker (LT1). That car has been very very reliable. Sadly mine chews through Autocraft batteries, the only battery that has lasted the test of time was a Optima battery. Then again the LT1 does require more strength to start than the TBI's (higher compression ratio due to reverse cooling), so who knows why mine is so picky with them.

    Posted on Jan 8, huh? That very day my PC flat out refused to cold start where it had always worked fine before. Admit it - you jinxed it :p
    Understandably puzzled, I opened it up, and guess what I found? A bulging cap on the board. ;-/ I then proceeded to let the hairdryer do some persuasion, and lo and behold, she lives again. So suspend to RAM it is for now, until I get a replacement part in. There's only a single cap like that, and it's a bit larger, so I strongly suspect a case of penny-pinching. It's basically an office machine and close to 9 years old now, so well past the usual 3-5 years at this point.

    I'm gonna have fun around 3PM today, it's going up to 24F from 10F right now at 8AM, and I'll have to start the van up for the first time in 3 days. I've found that the power steering whining is usually one of three problems: clogged filter, pump going dead, or the fluid just being old. in the cases of both my Corollas and the 96 Grand Caravan back over the years, a change of fluid was all that was needed. just siphon until empty, fill, run a bit, siphon again and then fill and leave it for another x amount of miles or until the pump finally croaks. Haven't had a pump go on me yet, thankfully, fingers crossed.
    I ran my Shuttle SG33G5 in the garage back in early 2014 when the weather was this cold last time. overclocked the HD5670 512MB and was mining DOGEcoins with it when scrypt algorithm mining was still viable on GPUs. made enough in the first few weeks to get my T500. I can't find the screenshot, but I believe the coldest the GPU got to was about 5C/41F and the CPUs somewhere around 8C/46F. and that was under full tilt load with both the CPU (an old Pentium E2180) and the GPU mining DOGEcoins. Would I ever do it again? Probably not. going out to replace the E8200 with the E2180 to bring down internal thermals, the compound coming out of the tube was solid enough to touch without getting it all over your fingers. was it a good experiment? You bet, that was a lot of money made that winter. I'm going to go out on a whim and assume the 360 in your garage there is probably somewhere along the same lines of temperature, and to be honest, for those machines at the very end of the Core 2 lines Dell had at the time, they're still probably some of the most reliable machines they've put out since the late 90s/early 2000s before cap plague gave them a bad rep. I'm more than certain that Dell will only die in the immense heat we'll be having this summer, what with the frigid temperatures this winter being any sort of indication. this weather is like a vacation for it.

    In reference to that battery that's in your wagon. I also found its the best I ever had. It can be purchased at Advance Auto Parts. I use to buy Walmart Battery's but found price was good but would not last more then two years. My mechanic stated to me he has many people come in with Walmart battery failure. He directed me to Advance Auto for the Battery's and one lasted 7 years for me.

I have a 300,000 mile Jeep Cherokee that never broke down once, unfortunately due to the fact that I live in Connecticut it got a little rusty. I built another AMC Jeep Xj over the summer. Over the winter I ran my 300k Xj occasionally as well as took it out when the roads have been salt free and dry. You should do the same for that chevy. It will run much better

    A low nearly dead battery in the 06 Monte Carlo will cause the key to get locked into the ignition. Won't come out until the car get's jumped and starts,
    Cold starts in California, sometimes gets below 40, is that enough for a cold start?

  • @Huvada
    @Huvada 7 лет назад

    My moms car had some weird quirks when starting up cold.
    It was a Peugeot 3008 from 2010 (purchased new). It didn't even have to be extremely cold for things to go wrong with it. -5 C (23F) was already cold enough to cause issues. It would start, but you can't get out of the driveway, as the engine didn't have any power at all. It could take up to 15 minutes or so of driving before it started to behave predictable, as the computer was trying to get the engine to heat up fast.
    The car overall wasn't very well designed to begin with. The onboard computer was horrible and unreliable.
    The air conditioning was also heavily underpowered, not being able to prevent the windshield from fogging up, even after running for quite some time.

    Don't worry about the whiny power steering pump...as long as it's quiet when warmed up completely it's OK. This is just the nature of hydraulic pumps when cold. Even brand new ones make that noise cold. Not all of them, mind you, but enough where it's VERY common. Don't want to see you waste money if you don't have to...

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад +1

      This car has a small leak in the steering rack, something that will be repaired when the weather is more suitable. Or at least that is the plan. For now it's got some rather-heavier-than-usual magical elixir that should hold until things can be fixed. And yes, the noise does largely go away when it has warmed up and the thicker-than-usual fluid has thinned out.

    more than likely, one of the parameters the Impala's PCM monitors is battery voltage so its locking out the Remote Start because the battery is below a pre prorgrammed threshold to where if it tried to initiate a remote start event, the effort would pull the voltage down to a point where the PCM would likely lose power during cranking.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад

      I was of the same impression, but the battery was able to run all of the headlights, blower fan and other accessories without any sign of an issue. If they're monitoring voltage to determine whether or not a remote start attempt is allowed, they must have managed a truly impressive level of precision in the metering.

    • @digitalrailroader
      @digitalrailroader 7 лет назад

      uxwbill you also have to remember; the starter pulls a LOT of amperage during cranking; to where if the battery has a bad cell, even though it can run the accessories just fine, it will do the thing I mentioned in my original post, and draw so much power that it pulls the power the PCM needs to function at the same time.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад

      It certainly does. However, based on the other accessories appearing to work normally, I have to wonder upon what criteria the computer refused to attempt a remote start. It didn't try and fail -- it didn't try at all.

      Illinois USA. At risk of sounding like that guy who goes around taking all the fun out of things, I talked about how it can always be colder elsewhere. It's still dangerously cold weather and things have gotten close to -20°F (-32°C) a time or two.

    Nice vid, Buick engines usually are reliable, funny as soon as the one of the old Buick designs was sold to Rover it magically became unreliable, and then when it was fitted into the TVR sports cars it became even more unreliable! Us Brits really can’t do engines.

      Furhead drives the Heep all the time. The Naughtiac is in storage awaiting repair (stuck in second gear) and the Keykeeper's Green Lemon garage art needs time and a few parts.

      Fallout 3 should run fine. I ran that on a E8400 and a GT 730 and it ran nicely (worse specs than yours). Not sure for GTA 4 but it should run fine as well given it was only released around a year after Fallout 3.

    • @matthewjbauer1990

      I couldn't count on my 2013 Chevy Sonic today. Took me 5ish mins to start it today and it was about 25 degrees or below. Check engine light came on. Began running rough and cruise control failed to work. Remote start also was disabled due to fault codes. Took it into the dealer to get it serviced as my livelihood depends upon 2+ hours a day in my Chevy.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад +3

      That's because it's actually a *Daewoo* in Chevrolet clothing!

    • @matthewjbauer1990
      @matthewjbauer1990 7 лет назад

      ***** So that's why a lot of the parts are Korean... Makes sense. And, Chevy must have lied because they claimed it to be the only "Assembled in America" compact car.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад +1

      That is precisely why. When Daewoo failed in the early 2000s, GM bought up their automotive manufacturing operations and renamed them to "GM Korea". Daewoo entered the US automotive market with cars like the Nubira, but they were gone almost as quickly as they had arrived.
      Although the Sonic is assembled in the US, other compact cars from other makers (Ford, Honda, Chrysler, Toyota, Subaru and likely others) are most certainly assembled at plants in the United States as well. (And just like the Sonic, most of these cars are also made in plants outside of the US. Some of them even come to the US market from these foreign assembly plants, something that's true of the Sonic as well.)

      Friend of mine just bought a Spark for $12,500. I worry about the quality of the Korean manufactured stuff but, the car has a lifetime power train warranty from the dealer and 4 free oil changes a year for as long as they live here so hopefully that will keep anything horrible at bay

    Bill, You must love pain, its cccold outside, get back in doors you mad man :-D.
    The cold weather is a great test for battery capacity, ive seen no end of people get the slow "Turnover of death" car engine, they allways say the same thing "Its allways started fine, i dont know why its doing this".
    Yep there car did start while the weather was warmer, the battery just barely had enough capacity to work.
    Time to say bye bye to the old battery.:-(

    What's with American cars making that bong-bong-bong-bong-bong noise when you put the key in? Do they all do it? Do non-American cars need that noise added in when they are sold over there?

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  7 лет назад +2

      The chime (or sometimes a buzzer) is a reminder not to leave your keys in the car. In order for it to sound, the key has to be in the switch and the driver's side door has to be open.
      The slower paced chime that sounds after the key is turned on is reminder to put your seat belt on. It only sounds if the seat belt isn't already latched.
      I'd be greatly surprised to find that either of these features is specific to US-based auto makers, or a car intended for the North American market...but I'm kind of starting to wonder!

    • @fuzzymonkey87
      @fuzzymonkey87 7 лет назад

      Well this is weird. I just realised our Corolla beeps when you put the key in, but no beeping when turned to the "ON" position. LOL we've had this car for years and I never payed attention to that sound! The MX5 (miata) and my last two cars definitely didn't make any beeping or bonging noise.

    • @yorgle11
      @yorgle11 7 лет назад

      It's one of our many nanny laws in the US, all cars sold here have to have that chime. I don't know when it started, but I know from the emotional scars that my parents old 1977 Mercury had a loud buzzer in it that would startle children from their slumber. Pretty sure my dad's 1969 did not buzz, so I guess the starting date is in between there somewhere.
      My 86 GM doesn't do it as I ripped the offensive part out of the car.
      There used to be some weirdo on youtube who would post questions on every car video asking if each car had a buzzer or a beeper. I don't know if he was building a database or what.
