The entire HTTYD franchise is wonderfully realized. The dragons are beautifully and vividly imagined, designed, and animated, the story is fascinating and engrossing, and the soundtrack just pulls you straight in.

    • @EstorilEm
      @EstorilEm 5 лет назад +31

Eamon Hyatt it’s lack of awards will forever haunt me, in spite of the nominations. I feel like everyone in the franchise knows they’ve been a part of one of the greatest animated movies in history - to miss out to some of those other animated films just kills me. Agreed though - this was just so well done overall that it’s tough to comprehend. The voices, story collaboration, sound effects and editing, an EPIC soundtrack, groundbreaking animation technologies. I could go on forever.

So far there have been two concerts such as this.
They happened not long after the films were released.
I need to keep an eagle eye out on DreamWork Animation's social media after the third film is released on May 18th 2018.
For I highly suspect they will have another just like the previous two. And if I can, I intend to be there to finally hear this masterpiece of music live. :)

I used to say that the movies would never beat the books…and then I heard the soundtrack, and realized they’re not something to be compared. The two series are independent of each other, and both are beautiful beyond imagination

The reason it had to end was that Fans of the blockbuster animated franchise were no doubt elated to see the new trailer for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, the third and final installment of this epic fantasy trilogy, when it premiered earlier today. But in this world of endless franchising, it may be hard to believe that this is really the "final" installment. Aren't there fourteen Land Before Time movies, after all? (Don't bother looking it up. There are.)
But according to director Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the original How to Train Your Dragon and directed the next two films solo, the acclaimed series really does have a finite conclusion. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will finally explain why, if the series takes place in the past, there are no more dragons flying around today. And apparently, we are all going to need to bring tissues.
We spoke to Dean DeBlois on the phone, where he explained that he never wanted this series to go on forever, like some animated franchises. “I mean, honestly that was my fear going into any sequel, is that they can trail on forever and kind of lack narrative purpose,” DeBlois said.
“So when I was asked to come up with an idea for a sequel to the first film, I pitched the idea of a trilogy that would map three acts of one story, and would follow Hiccup from a ne’er-do kid, to the wise viking chief of his tribe. And they bought into it so, I’m sticking with that and trying to make sure that each installment is some sort of crossroads that Hiccup encounters is part one overall world, that takes him towards his destiny.”
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - First Official Trailer
    2:28
It’s a map that hasn’t changed much since he originally plotted his course. “Details change, as they always do, and it gets refined over time, but the ambition to try to set up a story that would carry forward and answer questions that had not been answered in in the first installment or the second, and would reach a satisfying culmination, was always the intent and that’s remained rock solid throughout the making of all three films,” DeBlois continued.
And again, one of the questions that still needs to be answered is... why are there no more dragons today?
“One of the things that I liked about our approach to the material, which differs from the books actually, is that our dragons don’t speak. There isn’t magic in this world. It’s essentially our world, a fanciful retelling of our history, but it supposes that there was a time of dragons and here [we] are, in 2018, and there are no dragons around. So what happened?” DeBlois laughed.
“I like that as a narrative conceit, and the idea that this story of Hiccup and Toothless, and all of the dragons that came with that relationship, should reach a finite and satisfying end has been the great ambition. How do you separate a duo that people, certainly the fans of the franchise, have come to love together? And do it in a way that leaves the audience not feeling cheated, but rather on board with how it all comes to be.”
It’s a tough balance, coming up with a conclusion that gets rid of the dragons, whilst satisfying fans of a series which is all about the awesome wonder of dragons. Fortunately, Dean DeBlois has precedent to work with.
“I think there are examples, there have been stories and there have been really pivotal ones, for me, in which two characters, disparate as they are, come together and they manage to form such an impression and such a deep impact on one another’s lives that should they separate they’ll never be the same again. And I find that very life-affirming and true, so here’s an opportunity to contribute to that canon of films that kind of shaped me as a storyteller.,” DeBlois explains.
“And when I say that I’m speaking of films like E.T. or Born Free, or even Titanic to some degree. There’s a theme of characters that were destined to meet but not destined to stay together, and there’s something really powerful and emotional and indelible about those films that has created the high bar we’re hoping to reach.”
The How to Train Your Dragon movies have been building to that conclusion since the beginning, but it was always Dean DeBlois’s intention to make a franchise out of stories that stood on their own.
“I should say that it’s also been a strong ambition of ours from the start not to create films that depended on one another in order to enjoy them,” DeBlois says. “For example, I think some film franchises leave you with a cliffhanger and it’s really interrupting the story halfway through, and you’re dying to find out what happens next. Which is great, but in our case we tried to make three standalone stories that are interlinked, but if you have not seen the first or the second, you can still enjoy the third and not feel like you’re behind on a lot of the details.”
But of course, the scale of the franchise has been building this whole time. “It starts small and innocent and full of wonder, and it develops more serious stakes as it develops,” DeBlois said. “Certainly the second film was more mature than the first but hopefully it still contained a certain amount of wonder and wish-fulfillment and exploration, and the core bond between Hiccup and his dragon.”
“But the larger narrative kind of speaks to Hiccup’s insecurity that he holds just under the vest, which is ‘Am I worthy without my dragon?’ Because he was, in first film, a real odd character in his world. He didn’t belong in a lot of ways, physically and in terms of his forward-thinking, and his successes and his notoriety and his achievements are all largely based on his relationship with Toothless. So the third film really delves into the question of, ‘Who am I without him?’ and ‘Am I clinging for the wrong reasons?’ and ‘Could I stand on my own?’ You can’t train someone to let go, so that’s really what we’re delving into thematically in this third installment.”
That storyline about letting go is a big part of the reason why, in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Toothless gets a girlfriend.
“It’s presented with innocence, and of course it is an innocent encounter that develops more heavy consequences in that the Light Fury is an engine of change,” DeBlois explained. “She is distrusting of humans. She’s wild. She’s elusive. And through the mutual attraction between [Toothless] and the Light Fury, Hiccup is forced to confront something about himself, which is, is he holding Toothless back from his call to the wild? By clinging to old ideas and old ways, and this belief that they should all be together, is that ultimately the right thing?”
Fans of the franchise have many more questions about the upcoming film, but there’s only one more question we can ask that DeBlois can actually answer right now, without spoiling the movie: Why is the new film called “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” when the previous film in the series was called “How to Train Your Dragon 2?”
As we wrapped up our conversation with Dean DeBlois he gave us the reason for the change. “The way it’s been explained to me is that numbers can sometimes make it feel like it’s just yet another installment,” DeBlois said. “And we wanted to celebrate this as the epic conclusion of our trilogy. So whereas my first instinct was to call it How to Train Your Dragon 3 as well, it was put forward to me that giving it a subtitle kind of gives it a little more importance within the trilogy, and it also speaks to the ending, and the culmination of it all.”
