Also, what do you think about patch yagi guns? There is a channel on youtube, in Russian, where one enthusiast makes such ones. the name is "Free wardriving". He also makes Batwing antennas that have a broader range of frequencies.

    So is that antenna linearly polerised as in horiontal in the video. Do you think you would have picked up more WiFi AP's with it set to vertical polarisation? But nice project all the same. Oh for the insulation of the Driven element Transistor isolating washers may work. they are usually made of ptfe as well so would not melt in the sun. 👍

    Simply fantastic, id very much like to see what you could do with up to date videos, with such range you can detect signals and perhaps connect to an open wifi access point but would you receive data from the access point as the transmitting access point antenna is tiny and the signal may be good with this ant but the receiving strength surely would not??? Very nice! Legal limits aside, is there a theoretical limit to the gain? For instance, if you could build one 10 metres long with the proper parasitic spacing, would it perform that much better?

    • @andrewmcneil
      @andrewmcneil  3 года назад +6

      The easiest way to think about it is an antenna is not an amplifier it’s a radiator. It can only work with the energy available. If you had an iPod and connected two speakers to it you would hear the music fine but if you want to add more speakers say 10 the volume would go down to a whisper as the same energy is shared between the speakers. To lift the leaves you would need to add an amp to lift the power levels it’s the same with RF.

    • @michaelstarks7029
      @michaelstarks7029 3 года назад +2

      @@andrewmcneil thanks, Andrew. That makes perfect sense. I suppose that the antenna could be as big as you want legally as long as it's rx only, but then of course the limit is the tx of the other access point.

    Andrew would it make a difference to the antenna performance if i used 1mm thick copper sheet for all the elements.

    • @andrewmcneil

Most wifi cards have around gain 2-4 dbi but connecting to antenna its worst, because i've figured out that homemade antenna and connecting to wifi card is worst idea due to receiving signal, i made at home one yagi circular antenna and it didn't worked, i've followed any steps in video but nothing also this isolating this driven element. So if this thing can work then how is this amplified? Do i need a very powerful amplifier ? Or can be used wifi card and making giant antenna?
