Wow this takes me back Andrew . This is the first work I done after leaving school , I remember repairing buckets like this with my father , it seems like only yesterday but it was over 40 years ago ! Thanks for bringing back some memories , The one thing I liked about it was in the winter after welding for a while it was nice to sit down next to the lovely hot bucket .
Andrew, i sure hope you don't pay much attention to all these PRO welders on here telling you how messed up they think your work is, when i used to live out in the boonies and i did exactly what you do for a living it's necessary to repair stuff as quickly and cheaply as possible and get it rolling again
My friend has been using that bucket, its been working fine.

That Lincoln 110 welder is the first welder I ever bought. Watched welding videos, then just spent time in the shop doing different welds and materials to practice. It took a little time, but after a bit I began to work through how to weld different thickness materials etc.
Was good to see when I wasnt getting good penetration compared to too hot.
Using those chain dogs to bend the metal was awesome now I have a new weapon in my arsenal, thanks.
Although I'm twice your age you remind me of my father. He was a machinist welder by trade and used and old pipeline stick welder for home projects. He never bothered with elaborate preparation and rarely changed amperage or voltage settings. Farmers and ranchers were always bringing their broken down equipment for welding repair.
Andrew I think I can speak for all us subscribers saying how enjoyable and fun it is to watch your videos.
You strike me as a personable, kind and patient soul that just welcomes us in to your very interesting realm through the camera lens. I am 70, electrician/engineer type but having been around jobsites and equipment many decades I can say your work ethic is amazing.
I am particularly impressed by your attention to maintenance, proficiency at most any repair and improvisation skills. I get amused at some of the armchair welders that judge you so critically. I think having worked for my journeymans card for several years at my master's customers, which happened to be sawmills, I can say your welding and metal working is first class. If the weld flows, it will go out the door and stay together. Man you should have seen some of the "sawmill welders" work. Makes yours look like master welder AWS certified. I am so proud of you, how you show us so much interest and concern and take your valuable time to show us how to do work and tasks some of us have never done or infrequently do. I hope you continue as your format, attitude and demeanor is absolute A++ best on You Tube! God Bless be safe and keep those GREAT videos coming we are all hooked!!!🙂

Nice welder. I have used a old Lincoln Tombstone for years on heavy equipment and never had a issue,
yeah I got one brand new for $200. second hand, the guy couldn't hook up plug, 8)

So much negativity in the comments! Hey guys, its just an old POS worn out bucket they getting a little more service out of. The only thing that might have been a suggestion is that my dad would often put holes in a plate to be scabbed on.. and then welded through and filling all the holes. Andrew got some of this from the inside and guess what. Its enough. Nice job to get a little more life out it. Buckets are expensive.. the rock in mid-state NY is tougher than the taxes! Good save..

I like these videos. Andrew is not a know it all. He reminds me of my buddies and I when we're trying to figure something out and end up just doing it and seeing how it works. Very humble. First time I ever welded was with a Millermatic. I thought welding was super easy then because a 220V welder can do some pretty awesome stuff. Found out I wasn't such a hotshot with my 120V stick welder. You can do some pretty amazing things with a 120V stick welder if you have a torch on hand to warm things up. Still, 120V sucks.
Tell your buddy to stick a 2x4 under the torch as a burn bar to keep it steady and he will do a nice job with it.
A tip for u! When cutting with torch keep the flame pointed/ tipped/ slanted forward to the cut u are about to make... It will preheat the cut in front of you... Good job!

Plus one on the 251 Andrew. I have two of them. One of them I keep loaded with ER71 .045 dual shield wire for just the type of project you did. You will find that the penetration you can achieve and weld quality is superior to straight mig. It leaves a slag like stick welding but it is the process by which they built the bucket initially.Keep on rocking.

I work on fair share of 24" backhoe buckets, not much smaller than that. I love it, I cant hardly do any thing wrong. Good practice. I use those ratchet tie downs often, like when the cutting edge gets ripped loose. I don't think are guys really abuse them, cause its all they got. I tell them go break something else.

Good video Andrew, the Miller matic and the Gen welder are good machines, I'm ex coded welder so my choice alls stick, it's slower but using 7018s on DC real does the trick. But yea good going, good luck for future.

you should trade in your acetylene for an extra oxygen bottle and change your tip over to propane. it's way cheaper and cuts better and if you run out of acetylene on a weekend you're screwed but you can get propane anywhere!
I’ve seen propane tanks at gas stations in the middle of nowhere. Everyone’s gotta run the BBQ for Sunday.
if your using that welder primarily for heavy equipment you can save some money by using straight Co2 instead of 75/25 for dirty metal and save 75/25 clean metal
i'm a welder fabricator in the U.K and can see you do your best with the gear you have, many of the comments on here are untrue porosity in welds is from impurities and lack of shielding gas in this case it will be down to the rust and paint not spatter that is caused by to much wire speed and not enough current, others saying you should of cut the bottom out and welded a new heavy plate in with just a grinder and mig set have never formed metal before, to get heavy plate to that shape you would need a sizeable set of rolls or have it bumped up on a press brake. keep up the good work enjoy your vids.

I ran out of argon/co2 mix one holiday weekend, would have had to wait 4 days for a refil. A friend said try your straight co2, I did and it worked great, not as good as the argon mix for clean tidy work but for jobs arround the tractor where a bit more spatter doesn't matter its just fine, works out a lot cheaper too, i now have 2 bottles, straight co2 and argon/co2 mix. Anither good thing is being what they use for beer pumps most bars have a spare to lend you if you run out on a weekend as sods law always does.

a Welder's secret, when welding a crack. Drill a hole at the end of the crack to stop it from reappearing after weld ( then weld the hole thing )

Andrew, just a few comments on the haters who show up to criticize some welding process:1. We saw you do the hard work and the complete results. Who knows if these trolls have ever actually gotten their hands dirty other than from the keyboard. Easy/ safe for them to criticize from an anonymous handle when they have nothing to offer. 2. Don’t let the haters annoy or discourage you from producing what so many of us enjoy. 3. There are always folks who won’t put logs on your fire to fan your flames. Instead, they want to pee on your fire so everyone else can suffer with their stench. Momma was right, ignore them and eventually they will slink back away. Keep up the great stuff. Your real audience loves it!
Perhaps if you had experience with welding like some of us have, you would understand the problems with his welds. His content is very enjoyable to watch, some of his ideas have inspired me. That said, I have enough real world experience to know a bad welder when I see one. I have the scars on my arms from putting the quality of my weld ahead of the spatter burns that come from welding in unusual positions without the correct PPE.
+NavySturmGewehr a professional welder can look at a weld an see if it's done right or wrong. and I agree that one is not right at all if that guy uses that bucket to make money on a daily it's not gonna hold. the bucket is weak an failing very thin just like a pop can keep bending it an it will rip. break. tear. etc. I am not a good weld but if the guy paid him a 100 dollars then he got what he paid for.

That added some life to the bucket for him. A new one is probably pretty pricey. The way the boom on the excavator moved was really interesting. Hadn't seen one of those before. I love your selection of welders. The Lincoln "tombstones" are a time tested piece of equipment. I had a Lincoln that was similar to your Millermatic. Those are really nice machines. It ended up being a bit to big for my home shop, so I traded down to the Lincoln 210MP and picked up the capability to TIG with it as well.
I too picked up the 210MP, great welder to get started with mig! Price is good to and it'll do 3/8" plate without an issue, just have to watch how long you use it for. I made a halfway decent review on my channel if anyone out there is interested.
I had a Power Mig 256 prior to the 210MP. The Power Mig was big enough you could weld really heavy stuff. It made me feel very manly. :-) The duty cycle on the 210 MP is not an issue for me. I rarely weld really heavy stuff for an extended period of time.
I can't speak for Andrew or his friend, but I'm guessing a new bucket is more than $1,000 - so if you were a small businessman, you'd repair it as long as you can have a decent outcome and usable bucket.

That excavator boom is interesting, cool setup. On the welder, the inside looks just like my Hobart. (In fact, the guide cone is a miller part...)
Andrew, another good video. Entertaining and informative. It would have been cool to see you do the ultimate field test of that repair by using that big CAT to swing and scrap another car! You’re very good at demolition!

Thanks for the welder discussion at the end! Welding is on my list of things to learn to do. Fortunately, I can wire up an outlet without any issues. That I know how to do.

Almost bought that welder, ended up going with the lincoln 256 because i got a better deal when it was on sale, couldn't convince myself to drop an additional $400 for the miller. Anyhow, both great welders obviously, nice having the extra power when needed and full size spools
Both good welders, that Lincoln of yours is really nice as well. Lincoln makes a good product, the 216 is also good too. I've been happen with my 210MP, want to start doing more Tig.
Ya can't complain, started off with a little tweco 3 in 1 that i had for 4-5 years. Bought a lincoln squarewave 200 tig which has been great. Then my little tweco started dying / give out and decided it was time to get a big transformer type mig since that what i mostly use. One thing i still havent gotten over after a year is having a 15 foot mig gun, it sure makes life easy.
Good job. Only thing I would caution you on is using some tinted goggles for cutting. It is bright enough to damage your eyes. I bought some without thinking the other day that are not made to fit over glasses. You have some nice welders there. I guess your next toy would be a TIG so you can weld aluminum. They say you can MIG with aluminum but I have heard of issues with the wire being too soft to run through the standard MIG hose. I know they have special guns for aluminum to fix this issue but I don't know of anyone who MIG welds aluminum.

Have you considered changing up from 'B' bottles to 'K' bottles for your welding gasses? Yes, they are heavier and a bit more expensive to start, bur the price per cubic foot of gas is much less and then there is the time and cost to get another bottle when they run out in the middle of a job. My dad showed me this almost 50 years ago when he brought gas welding home one day.

Good repair! Might be a good idea if you have the cash to put some hard surface cross hatching where the bottom of the bucket is getting the most wear,especially if you are digging in material with a lot of rock. The rods are expensive though, so I guess its a trade off, have to fix it again sooner rather than later or spend a little more on it now to extend the life of it.Helped a guy years ago when i was going to school, he built his own ditching hoe. We cross hatched the crap out of it with hard surfacing rod, but we didn't have to pay for the rods either!

Thanks, yeah I suggested that. That's all he wanted to do. With the hours few that machine sees, that bucket will be fine for years.
Also on the torch heating stuff up get I think it's call like a rose bud it heats stuff up really hot and fast
Miller welders are good.I hear allot of people like the Lincoln more.I never noticed a difference.If you are going to run .45-.52 thousand wire miller will work fine.If running 1/16 or bigger core wire Lincoln would be a better choice.Also when looking for a welder get the external feeders for both.Easier to fix and replace parts.Welder like this if needs fixing and you can't do it you will need to bring the whole thing in.Been welding for 24 years so I do know a few things.

Hey Andrew have you ever tried hard facing welds on bucket or teeth. It works great. Try it out. I for for welding rod but any welding supply will have them.
Andrew, way to teach your buddy in the process of fixing this bucket. It's a bucket and will be just fine for some time. I bet this video was more about working with your friend than critical welds..
If you can get ahold of some AR 400 plate or at least 514 wear material you can add a lot of life to the buckets. You won’t be able to roll it like that mild steel but you can cut it into 3-4” strips and run them parallel to the bucket lip. Leave them about 3” wider than the bucket it’s self to help with wear in the lower corners of the bucket sides
Yeah, that's a good idea. He just wanted a quick fix, that bucket has been holding up fine.

I saw a video from welding tips and tricks, they compared and timed cutting using a cutting torch vs a cutting disk. If you need to clean up the cuts then a cutting disk is actually faster.

Hey Andrew, I would invest in a 7 1/4" Milwaukee metal cutting skill saw. Save me a ton of money on gas and time. Cuz we all know time something we never get back. And it'll zip that played off just beautiful. I can cut half inch plate and it looks like somebody cut it with the laser. Just a suggestion paid you can usually find them used on Craigslist. And also a warning about him. Empty the chip bin every cut. Cuz that's the one thing that burns blade up. But it's carbide blade thing works awesome I used the crap out of mine to cut heavy plate like you got there. Good job on Weldon the bucket up from a guy's been welding for 25 years and never taken a class never been taught by anybody but, I have built some amazing stuff.
Great video Andrew. Your buds Cat sort of reminded me of a Komatsu, I swear I've seen that weird boom before. Nice welder setup you have, one thing to let others know is "duty cycle" if someone is going to be doing a LOT of serious welding, all day long or with big material, it's nice to spend the money on the bigger Miller or Lincoln as they can weld a long time without have to cool down. That little Lincoln welder with innershield in it has a much lower duty cycle and is only good for small material and shorter welding times. I bet that gas powered Miller could run all day long at 250 amps, I know my Lincoln Weldanpower can burn all day at 250 Amps, thing sounds like a beast. Nice machines and I like this format of video, nice to let the views know this kind of stuff. I'm sure that appreciate it!
Glad you liked it. I've never really hit the duty cycle on those machines, I remember one day my friend and I were doing identical welding jobs side by side, he had a Lincoln 100 and I was using the Lincoln 135, they looked identical, but the 100 kept stopping where the 135 could be used much longer.
I think I hit the limit once on my SP125, but I was doing some major welding as a kid, building go kart frames lol!

That cat looks similar to the ex60urg that I am replacing swing bearing on. The boom is the same for sure.
all wire feed ,wire is equal to 6013 rod (60,0000 t.s.) isn't it. What about 7018 (70,000 t.s.) or frame steel (120,000 t.s.) or stainless steel, case, or alum. can you get wire to weld them?
Look at the first cut that the helper was doing and then watch Andrew's cut. big difference

OH, you can make you a Dog to pull down the plate when you get it close..
Cut out a 3/8 ,1/2 plate 3"by 5" are 4"by 6" what ever you want, notch out a slot 3/4 by 2", 3" what ever your wedge is. Tack the plate down slide the wedge in the slot hammer it down, Works great, then grind off the tack. See Ya
A friend of mine and my son weld old leaf springs on the bottom of their bucket to serve as wear strips.
