  • Telling the History of New Bedford
    Through Its Architecture
New Bedford’s Rural Cemetery opened in 1837. It was developed in the style of a “rural or garden cemetery” style that became popular in the United states in the mid-1800s. The first, and perhaps most spectacular rural cemetery is Mount Auburn Cemetery, in Cambridge and Watertown, MA.
Join tour guide Bruce Barnes on a tour some of Rural Cemetery's older sections and notable grave sites. Bruce gives a brief history of the Rural Cemetery and indicates important features including gravestone art and symbolism. Grave sites visited include John H. Clifford (the only New Bedford resident to become Massachusetts Governor), John Avery Parker, Edward Coffin Jones, and the Civil War veteran section.
