My grandfather would fire endless illumination rounds out of their 81mm mortar which they got off of one of their contacts who had access to some shady shit. They weren’t supposed to have mortars, but they turned themselves into fire support. They shot endless illumination to keep the VC out of their friendly FOBs wire.
Grandpa also manned an m60, and he also almost accidentally mortared a friendly tank mistaking it as enemy with a 60mm.
I currently now follow in his footsteps as an 11c in the US army. Vietnam was no joke, and I hear the nightmare stories from my uncle?grandpa, and good friends father.
War is scary, but losing is scarier.

For those who have fought for it, life has a special flavor that the protected will never know. Well done Columbia."
You know Ghost Recon? These guys were the real Ghost Recon. 100% casualty rate. Nobody went home unscathed. Many of them killed in action, their pilots too. This was an amazing creator DLC. I really liked Global Mobilization and still do, but Prairie Fire ended up becoming much more than that. By involving these veterans of a secret American war, sharing their stories with us, consulting with their wisdom, the community around this title really got an inside look at their struggle for life in a far flung alien world over 50 years ago. These guys were in their 20s when they underwent that baptism of fire, and look at those photos, they're tiny scrawny guys. Not to be underestimated though, they're some of the finest warriors that have ever walked this planet.

The radio recording is the sound of RT Colorado, an 8 man team calling for immediate evac as a "prairie fire emergency" at the same time as RT Hawaii, another US element with unknown numbers. There are three reasons you'd call a prairie fire. You're taking contact from an overwhelming force, you're surrounded or about to be, or that death is imminent to your team. At that point, Colorado was running for their lives, having been wiped down to one man standing, one man being carried. 10 miles down the Ho Chi Minh trail, Hawaii has a prairie fire but they are "holding their own." Also, the man left standing on RT Colorado, Pat Mitchel, had just watched one of his guys die via RPG to the knee not very long before he started transmitting.
I can't find the outcome... however, seeing at it was a prairie fire... I don't think it ended well for MACV.

Mav V fact: the 100% casualty rate for spike teams means that every man who was in that team was injured once or twice each mission along with other who were KIA.

That's what happens when the CIA tell the VC you're coming and where from. SOG's job was to lock a group of VC/NVA in place so they could be bombed, but then the CIA in charge of South-East Asia had a brainwave, why not use the SOG teams as bait.

A recon unit got ambushed by heavy North Vietnamese contacts and were calling in for evac. Evac chopper starts taking heavy ground fire and the recon team haul ass through the jungle while under constant fire to try and get to a clear LZ for pickup all while calling in gun runs on the VC chasing them.

2:18 - Well Sweden did support North Vietnam, where as Finland gave us Lauri Törni. However Sweden gave the world Sabaton, who then wrote a song about Lauri Törni, so I think they evened the score.
