I like Darnielle's music, and style, he's a very good songwriter. That said, Ray Davies is a master songwriter (albeit inconsistent). I can see why all kinds of people could dislike either of them. It's a wide world with many particular experiences and tastes.

Because he's bad at criticism. When he likes an album he can find really solid reason as to why he likes it. But when. He dislikes this he has to grasp at straws to articulate what he doesn't like and says things that are flat out wrong. Anyway I was originally just making a joke. nope, i've watched a lot of his videos. at one point i considered myself a fan of his. at some point i decided he was a snob and i don't care about what he thinks very much

I really like them, but they are a bit weird. This guy seems to know his music and The Kinks use odd song structures that can be almost off-putting to some people. Very good imo though.
At the end of the day, all taste is given to be subjective and reactionary and peculiar. I've encounter plenty of people who Know Their Music yet unaccountably "hate" The Beatles, or The Pixies, mainly to knock them down several pegs over perceived Overratedness. It's a pose, in most cases. I'm not going to insult Johnny D's reasoning for disliking The Kinks -- a band that had more than its fair share of genius songs, and way more than The Beatles, I'd subjectively add -- although the series does bare the curious quality of an off-the-cuff neophyte. That's part of its appeal - zero pretension, pity, straight from the gut opinions.

I get it. If you like structure or lyrical coherence I can see how they might grind your gears. As for me I don’t care about structure if they can do that thing where it reaches into your flow state, which the kinks always does for me.

Nancy Spungen the kinks are absolute legends and changed music as we know it. I’d say it’s a far more egregious offense to dislike them when Florence and the machine is as commercialized and radio friendly as you can be
I think that there's a big difference between not liking a band and not respecting their contribution to music. You can't do anything about your taste, and if you don't like something you can't force yourself to like it. My problem wasn't with the fact that he didn't like Florence's song (and you're completely entitled to your opinion about her music, even if I don't entirely agree lol), it was that he said it sounded disingenuous (more or less).
Besides that whole mess and this novel I just wrote, I didn't mean my initial comment to be serious in any way. I was just taking the piss over my favorite musician criticizing my second favorite musician. bc I'm petty af
She sounds disingenuous to me, theres not much soul in her music, shes sort of an indie Celine Dion. But yeah, its still fine to like her music its just music after all.

I used to love The Kinks... then I heard 'Black Messiah'. That's when I took a closer look at 'Arthur'... and now here we are
I doubt you’d judge JD by the ideas his characters express in his songs, so why assume that the narrator of Black Messiah is RD or expressing RD own views?
The entirety of Arthur is from a character’s perspective, based on RD’s Brother in Law.
It’s a fools game trying tie these kinds of writers to their lyrics given they deliberately write from multiple perspectives.

I'd like to thank VICE News for putting the hot-take-I-didn't-know-I-would-pay-to-unhear right in the video title. My curiosity to hear it all out gives me dismay, if no loss of respect at Darnielle's opinioneering. We all hear things differently. It just happens Darnielle hears The Kinks flat out wrong. Maybe The Kinks remind him of unhappy memories in his life, or maybe the devil on his right shoulder is shouting to loud to hear the genius of the brothers Davies. At any rate, The Kinks > any rock band since.
John has beautiful feet, leave him alone. Imo he should show them nore often.

i've found that musicians tend to have questionable taste in music (at best). DJs/producers are the people to ask about this type of stuff imo.

I'm a big fan of The Mountain Goats, and something I love about John Darnielle is how incredibly, unabashedly dorky he can be. Occasionally onstage but especially in his personal life re: his interests- Magic the Gathering, D&D, reading dense academic books about history for fun are a few. I'm good with anyone who's a dork or nerd and doesn't give a damn what anyone else thinks (my partner of 13 years definitely fits the description perfectly).

As long as we're pulling Facts out of our fundament, let me submit: it's objectively true that Franklin Bruno is not only a better songwriter and musician than Darnielle by a factor of exactly 301424%, Bruno is also literally a better songwriter than Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, Woody Guthrie, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Randy Newman, Townes Van Zandt, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Kern and Stephen Fucking Foster.

You obviously are not ‘au fait’ with how to pronounce English surnames; the e in Davies is not sounded i.e.it is pronounced Davis. Should you have problems with the French and Latin references I have made please do not seek guidance from ‘moi’.

@@gerrymcq1555 I just find this comment funny (the original, not yours!), considering *so many* people screw up pronouncing John's last name (as "Darn-Yell" instead of "Darn-Neel"). Also considering what you pointed out: John's an incredibly intelligent and educated person, and if he mispronounced one person's name, even a popular person, my feeling is... Meh? He's human.
