    7 steps summary:
    Part 1:
    1) Let go of intentional weight loss ( restricting certain food groups can make u crave it more)
    2) Make time of stillness and self reflection ( journaling, meditation, go for a walk, go to the sauna )
    3) Separate yourself from your binge urges (Observe yourself, give it a name , understand why the thoughts came up, face your emotions rather than numb yr feelings with food)
    Continue Part 2
    Thank u 🙏

I'm newly diagnosed with BED although it has been going on since my early teens. I cannot wrap my head around giving up the idea of intentional weight loss. I've been dieting (with alternating binges of course) for 40 years. Such a mental game! Tips appreciated! I used to think my binging was a choice.

It’s been a year since you commented, but maybe it’ll help. I think the key here is “intentional.” I would say that when we heal our relationship with food, we will stop numbing ourselves with it.. bingeing and therefore gaining weight. But when we focus on weightloss, that is the ultimate goal and, for me at least, this has not been helpful. It just hasn’t worked.. it always makes things worse. That’s what the video has helped me realise

I woke up today full of despair and self loathing about my body today and your video was so soothing. I’m so glad I found you at a time in my life where I felt more out of control than ever and no idea where to turn. My experience with GPS is that they are quite shaming and never address the psychological aspect. Thanks so much for your ur videos ❤

I'm getting through trauma and I just find it really hard to eat now. I don't feel anything but I do work in garden and trying to get rid of the past. I'm beginning to find things to watch that I like a bit but not eating. I buy the stuff and it sits there. I have to have noise of some kind now as the silence makes me remember. It doesn't help that I'm pushex to stay in the place where it happened.

I feel like crying and I'm only on step one. I am so desperate to lose weight...and yet, no; it hasn't helped to focus on that. I am absolutely terrified by this idea...

Thank you for this. I was surprised to make the connection as to why i haven't actively binged in a while. I meditate daily for many reasons, but never realized it was also helping me with my binge urges. I still overeat at meals and am trying to figure a way to curb that.
I was wondering, as I swing between binge eating disorder and bulimia, do these work for urges to purge as well. Its been a while since i have purged(several months) but i still on occasion get urges.

Hi Sarah, thank you for sharing your wisdom around binge eating, compulsive food behaviors and restrictions. I've been a dieter all my life until I started Overeaters Anonymous 12 1/2 years ago. Its started me on a journey of recovery, now I'm questioning the diet, restrictions, body image and weight loss side of it. I love the community but I'm not sure how it fits with intuitive eating. Can you help me unpack it? Thanks

Hello, does step 1 work even if you're dangerously overweight?

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist

The problem for most people who binge eat is that pursuing intentional weight loss CAUSES more binge eating, so it doesn’t work and actually makes the problem worse.
Pursuing a healthy relationship with food and finding balance will do more for someone’s health than continuing to try to diet and end up bingeing more.
The National Centre for Excellence (NICE) offers official, research-based guidance for binge eating treatment and they state that weight loss should not be a focus of binge eating treatment. Focusing on behaviour over outcome is far more helpful ❤️

Overeaters Anonymous never worked for me. The fact that some members consider a bite of sugary/floury food? I don't understand how that's helpful...to each their own I suppose.

Great video! For me the best way to stop binge eating is to stop the restrictive mindset. However the first aspect is identification which your video aids greatly.
I too have just started making binge eating related content and would love it if you could check it out and give me some tips😅
