Impact reamer | enlarge holes in steel easily

  • In this video I use some impact reamers to enlarge some holes in thick pieces of steel. Normally a job like this is difficult as the drill bit can snag, which can cause injury to the user. Now this job is much easier using HMT impact reamers. HMT have plenty of solutions for drilling steel and even harder types of steel such as rail track/Hardox etc.

Impact reamers are available in metric or imperial sizes-

Sometimes a new tool is developed that can make your job much easier, Impact reamers are that tool!
You know how much I try to avoid making videos where I have to say the word “Hole”, but sometimes it is unavoidable 😉
If you can’t see the link to the HMT website in the description, you can find it here- holemaker-technology.com/
I hope everyone has a great Sunday 😉

Hi mate, season's greetings to you and your's, those reamers cirtainly do the job, brilliant, I know what you mean whith wrestling whith the big drill, when I was an aprentice I was using a bigger version, which hung from a spring from the roof, it grabbed ,picked me up, spun me round tying me up whith cable ,until it pulled the plug out,I was terified but knew if I let go the metal handles would have smashed my head in, it gave me deep respect for these tools after that, that was 54 yrs ago, you never forget. I'm an engineer, I use bridge reamers all the time in the field. Absolutely a must have.... drilling a hole larger with a drill bit, can be a great way to break your wrist with a drill. (Of course depends on how much larger, I'm speaking when they CATCH.) FUN, as you nurse your wrist for the next month.

Another name for this type of reamer is a bridge reamers . What makes them work so well is the left hand spiral right hand cut.
    It keeps the reamer from
pulling out of control into the hole and jamming in the hole . Cutting tools are my business and I have sharpened many of these tools.

73£ for the adapter only .... damnn
Mid torque Milwaukee cost 130£ and helps for multiple different applications.
If fabrication on site looks wrong I prefer enlarging the holl with pistol drill , using annular cutter holder 25£ with multiple sizes of rotabroach cutters .
You do have kick back if you go fast , if you go slow the metal is like butter.
That way you can make brand new holl also, my pins are around 6.5 mm .
I use 6.5 mm drill bit to pre drill , after I use any size cutter to drill .
The system you show is looking good, but not essential. for me price and applications matter

What's a spring steel bumper, when it's at home?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  3 года назад +3

At one of the sites where I work they have steel "Bogies", which run on steel rails, similar to a train carriage. They are pushed and pulled around the plant by electric trucks. The bogies are made from steel and can weigh as much as 10 tons when fully loaded, the bumpers at each end are made from spring steel. Sometimes the bumpers break, most of the time we can weld them back together, but sometimes you have to replace the bumper, which is what I was doing in this video. There is a picture of the newly fitted bumper just before the outro on the video 😉
