What is amazing is that not long ago the level of the Mississippi river was so low barges could not get down in normal numbers thus significantly affecting the export of grain from the heatland to international markets.

My father had a coworker who also served as governor of a pueblo near our hometown in New Mexico. Representatives of The Army Corps of Engineers came to the pueblo lands to survey for flood control projects. Leaders of the pueblo were questioning the need for the survey. When asked what they did historically for flood control, they answered quite directly, "Unlike the white man we built on the high ground, where it didn't flood."

From the dawn of time people settled along water ways for commerce and trade. People followed those before them and end up in homes subject to flooding. Now one commenter is using the term historic high water mark. But there's a 100 year flood plain and then a designated flood plain. a historic flood means its beyond the calculated norms. I wrote a poem.
As the waters rise, and the flood comes near
We must stay strong, and never fear
For in these moments, we must unite
And face the challenge, with all our might
We may lose our homes, our belongings too
But what truly matters, is what we can do
To help our neighbors, and lend a hand
To those who need us, across this land
We must be strong, and stand our ground
And in our strength, hope can be found
For when we come together, in times of need
We can overcome, any flood or weed
It may seem like the end, when the waters rise
But with resilience and strength, we can survive
And come out stronger, on the other side
With a newfound strength, that cannot be denied
So let us stay strong, through the flood and the rain
And in our perseverance, we will not be in vain
For we are a people, who never give in
And with our courage and hope, we will always win.

I took a trip down the Mississippi River from St. Paul to New Orleans on a paddle wheel in October/November 2022 when the Mighty Mo was at a historical low. It was a big challenge for the crew and some ports had to be bypassed because it was just too low. At our Memphis stop, we had to dock down river and be bussed to Memphis. While quite upsetting for me and my fellow passengers, it was a headache for the barges not being able to go up/down river. As the Artic becomes ice free. As huge chunks of the Antarctic fall off into the sea. As Greenland's ice shield melts away, more water is being put into the atmosphere to be distributed globally. The earth is an enclosed system. Nothing escapes into space, so more water ends up falling to earth and being evaporated back up into the sky. So with the hydrologic cycle, which is essential for water distribution, having more water in it to distribute, catastrophic flooding is the result. This will only get worse because there is still plenty of water still locked up in the north and south poles and in the dwindling number of glaciers.. So could this happen more often.
