In the fall of 1964 my US Navy ship moored on the west side of Moen Island, Chuuk. I began my visit with a walk along the western shoreline with a young boy as my guide. After returning to the village my shipmates and I enjoyed a dance by locals and purchased some souvenirs. I met an American women who worked as a teacher on Moen Is. Her house was just below the entrance to a tunnel that passed through the mountain top to a gun emplacement overlooking the lagoon. I'm pretty sure it's the gun showed in the opening of this video. I had a very enjoyable visit there. Navigating in and out of Chuuk is somewhat treacherous as numerous Japanese shipwrecks remain from the US attack on the islands during WWII.
Had roommates in college from all around Micronesia; Truk (Chuuk), The Marshalls, Palau, Pohnpei. Got to go to all the islands...Back in the 70's. Spent about a month in Chuuk. Also spent about a year in Saipan. Didn't get to Yap and Palau, but had roommates in Saipan from there. I miss the slow pace of life there. My spelling is bad but, "keech menasin sala...Mortlockese...All of us, let's go"!!
It gets boring because you do want to interact with people plus you wanna do many things which can’t be done in a tiny place. But yes from distance it looks incredible
You have to drink deeply of the modern world to give up the fantasy’s of how great it will be and realize that what you had on that tiny island was all I’d ever need, beautiful water, cool breezes, fresh fruit, coconuts, fish, gardens, family, Look what the modern world brought here in 1944. Bombs, bullets, wreckage, killing. Sure go to the modern world and learn about being taxed and controlled , you have to live in the pit for awhile to appreciate the pinnacle.

Man, I miss Chuuk! I attended Xavier High School (Class of 1998). Thank you for the mini documentary and especially for including XHS in it. Without the school, I would have probably never experienced the Chuukese culture and its amazing people! And nope, lost my love stick a long time ago. Wakakak!

I got a say.... I really thank u for sharing such wonderful video... I my self don't know anything about my own history... But I appreciate the fact that there r others who would actually leave their home land or country just to go and learn such unique traditions.... Walls and fences everywhere. Can't walk on runway anymore. Some things are exactly the same though after fifty years. Still bad roads. If I was in gov. there, roads would be the first thing I'd get built. Appeal to bill gates or bazos or one of those rich guys. Then I'd lease fishing ships and harvest the ocean bringing in revenue. Build a packinghouse. Take the profits and invest it. Build high-rise condos for the people. Land is running out. Clean up the place and make it attractive to tourists. Teach the kids to be cultured. Give them a reason to WANT to come back. Keep the chines out of the region. Develop underwater turbine to create electric. Find oil, natural gas, etc. You have to have good roads first though.
Thank you, I hoping to see this one of the most beautiful islands. Take a look my Facebook page ,many beautiful pictures and many videos sailing around the world.Take care my Dear friend.
Great video, you mentioned that your father was a Corsair pilot in the marines, my grandfather was a pilot with VMF214 I have a picture of him sitting on the wing his Corsair in what I think is chuuk.
La Mancha Media; Thanks for the videos, very historicals ,History of war in the Pacific and the value of those islands to preserve peace on those islands.
You have not even touched the reality of what is happening in Chuuk go to the islands, the ones without electricity and spend about a week and experience what it’s like to have drunk people roam freely with no police on those islands. There are selfish high up people that control Chuuk and allow certain areas to have police but some other areas left to rot.
I can imagine. Thanks for your comment. There are many social ills there I know. Sobriety would help tremendously I'm sure. In fact I was asked by an important resident of Chuuk to take out the fight scene. I left it in because I'm trying to portray the reality. In fact I took out other stories that were worse including high rates of suicide.

I think Chuuk isn't getting better because of the higher ups. They're not addressing the issues they should be. Instead they're focusing on their own selfish needs.
These islands were under German rule and after Germany lost the WW I, the League of Nations awarded the islands to Japan. In case you are wondering why Japan, in a short time, was able to heavily fortified these islands, don't. They had between I and II.
Big problem of the government, many students got government scholarships and never come home, so we won't get any change or development. I also got a government scholarship and came back, I was surprised I became one of the schalorship board. And last year we granted 261 students with schalorship, hope they will come home. Sad story 😂 😂 😂

Another reason why chuuk dont really have that much buldings is because everytime they try to built things it gets destroyed, thats why chuukese people have a saying,( tirow lang, tirow puun, tirow saat) because we respect the land, but most of the contruction workers are people from the military, and also filipino's, so they dont really know the history of our people and what they did. There was a story, in chuuk this Man, i think he was in the construction company but yeah when they were cutting down the trees to built, they cut down this huge cotton tree, and rumors say that he died.😳
true shit bro. not just any tree. it was an ( AAWW) tree. tree of the death... this happened back in 2010 or 2011 during the PII construction days on chuuk. the Man that cut down the tree was a foreigner to chuuk not a native. and simply by that its disrespectful to the (AWWW) tree. you dont mess with that tree. my grandmother warn me about that tree to always avoid it. not to go near it. it really is a curse tree. you wont find it anywhere else in the world. it grows only on chuuk islands. especially Weno the chuuk main Island. True Facts!
The reason theres not much infrastructure is because the people of Chuuk own their own lands not the government. The government can have all the money in the world but if landowners dont want to give up their lands for further infrastructure then nothing can be built. Also even if landowners do give permission to built on their lands they eventually take their lands back in the end sometimes halting construction.
