- Jimmy came to Joburg and walked away with a South Africa Music Award for the Best Rap Album category. That's definitely a story you can take back home with you. Just after dropping his debut album, Popstar, which followed the award winning EP, Becoming A Popstar, Slikour sat down with one of the most prominent musicians in the South African music scene.
With a come up that's been bare, which everyone got the opportunity to witness, Yanga Chief's journey to self discovery is one notable one worth a share. He does this not only in this interview, but in his music album too. Once an introvert, and not seeing that as a weakness anymore, Yanga Chief has succeeded in making his personality cool and fashionable - going forth to pioneer a whole culture of Xhosa rap. Yanga Chief speaks on knowing very well how to be number 2, as that's the role he's played for the longest time. "Number 2 can make mistakes. I've been writing music for number 1's, but I now look at Yanga Chief as number 1," the musician proclaims as he further engages on not being afraid to share his truth anymore and taking up space.

Honestly speaking,I was never a Yanga Chief fan but A true Anatii fan since "iYeza".My point is it's not Yanga's music that got to me but his story and standing up for what he believes in Now I'm a true fan.hope one day when I Pop up like a star The Chief will still be around 🖤

Even way back before Driemanskaap Spaza existed. I remember the likes of Phizo, Simbone, Rattex, MaXhoseni, nabanye contributed a lot in putting Xhosa Rap “Spaza” in the map. I think they also should be given their flowers 💐 Xhosa rap isn’t a new thing.

Dont let the fact that they are all rapping in isiXhosa confuse you... The American rappers are all rapping in English but in California their sound is called Gangsta Rap/ G Funk, Chicago calls their sound Drill rap, the South calls theirs Trap
