The First Photographs of The Holy Land (1867-1879) Jerusalem’s Monuments by Bonfils [Ancient Judea]

  • Howdy ya’ll. Today we have the first photographs ever taken in The Holy Land. Images dated from circa 1867 through circa 1879. Decades before the establishment of Israel, we have photographer Felix Bonfils traveling through Jerusalem, taking the first photographs of numerous aspects of this magnificent and mysterious landscape.
An abundant and important collection of images, the detail here is outstanding, the architecture formidable and ancient, with many of the foundations in tact, yet seemingly everything here has been buried through centuries of weather events and rewriting of history.
It’s honestly dumbfounding to see Jerusalem before the development which occurred during the mid-20th century. In these first photographs we have ancient monuments abound, and for lack of a better term, they all appear original, not renovated or rebuilt, and the cornucopia of people, animals, running water, and other anomalous details for the age of the images only adds to our questioning of the narrative.
How did photographs this detailed exist back then? Why have they not been shared, dissected, and raised to the forefront by academia? What are these images hiding? I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments down below. Thank you for 95,000 subscribers. Enjoy!

“The current narrative” can’t be taken at face value since it’s always changing.
We need to delve deeper back into our written history since digital book burning has changed the narrative.

I agree. The Jerusalem we know no it’s just a counterfeit copycat place the true holy land is not where the narrative tells us it’s at they stole a lot of artifacts out of Africa and created the tourist attraction. We know today.

Wow, a bleak, arid place...a place of extreme deterioration, seems to me: and in most places not much people remaining either. These place names and stories are simply what we have been told...the REAL history is probably much different, IMHO. As one lady posits for a persistent reminder: "Always question the narrative" (as I'm sure you do Jarid). Great collection of photos. thank you Jarid.

Theve done rhe same w the crescent. Liok at the shriners has as an example.

Thankyou for putting these up.....the photos are in great shape. However what stands out for me in all of these pictures are that even at the time the photos were taken - it's clear either the people are too impoverished or it's just that the cultures living there have very little regard for the ancient sites because clearly all the remaining structures are 'very neglected in appearance'...the walls outside and within including all ornaments, artefacts making up the interior are moldy, sooty and or grimy, dirty - so clearly the state or country itself doesn't value these ancient sites or lands around it "enough" to keep them looked after properly.....very sad....

It's beautiful! We all know this here in Arabia... This is Arab land, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived peacefully together for more than a thousand years under Islamic rule. I want to point out that all women wore the Hijab at that time, not only Muslim women! And all the men wore a kind of "Islamic" hat, which is more a cultural than a religious thing.
The Hijab is part of the religion of Christianity and Judaism, and was worn throughout history even in Christian Europe. I am sure you have seen photos of that. BRING BACK THE HIJAB! BRING BACK RESPECT AND MODESTY!

Respect and modesty don’t require covering a woman’s beautiful hair. Those who chose modesty show their character. If all covered themselves we could only guess at their true nature. Modesty isn’t even a concept in the Bible. Freedom is what allows women to show their true nature. Please consider about this.

@@ThePiratemachine indeed..care to elaborate on the context? To give you some- I grew up in a Bible cult that strongly repressed sexuality and human beauty in the name of modesty. Very authoritarian and very anti-Christ. I’ve spent 15yrs in the real world now and, while I have my disgust with female solipsism and general self-worship, I know it is far better than the alternative.
I believe it’s possible to have a middle ground and healthy culture but I don’t know where I would find it in this time of mass manipulation and deception. The smartphone is literally the second-coming of the forbidden fruit. Offered to women to facilitate self-worship and men naturally follow right along.

10:27 in - VERY KOSSAK looking people / hats etc... a LOT of this seems very "RUSS-looking" ... so what IS the REAL history of the place is my ?
11:21 - this looks MUCH like the older IRISH building and construction methods! Viking-ish...
12:03 - NOW we're getting something - VERY irregular block shapes - tightly fitted... very interesting! You can tell people KNEW that cleaning chandeliers is 100% pain in the neck!
12:52 - does ANYONE know what the name of painting in the MIDDLE of the picture is?! Also... SO MUCH COPTIC art... Black Messiah / Madonna paintings left and right of the BIG painting in middle, also did you see the (2) 2-headed Phoenix sculptures with CROWNS higher up?! THAT is "THE CROWN" symbolism!
15:33 - notice the "nobby" blocks on the outside of the walls bottom left of the pic... COOL!
15:53 - does ANYONE know why/what are the ROUND blocks in the wall???

Russians and Vikings have long lived there after at least the Crusades, and Kingdom of Jerusalem founded in 1199 AD. There's always been international peoples there as an important location for leverage to shift trade routes between Europe and Southern/Eastern Asia.

I found out Bossing stones is leaving the outside face uncut, it's helpful to protect walls from direct forces pushing on them by redistribution of the force being applied, as opposed to a relatively large direct perpendicular force applied to a relatively small area intended to breach the wall.
Perhaps the circular stones in Damascus Gate walls were to avoid direct hit straight on at that location in wall by a projectile?
Bossed stones are cut building stones which are left rough on the external side.
Historians used to debate why builders did this. One theory was that it saved money since there was less finishing for the stone mason. Another was that it gave an impression of strength.
Now we know. According to several texts on catapults, bossing was a means of strengthening a wall against heavy shot. The projection dispersed the energy of the stone shot and prevented a direct energy transfer to the wall. Its use pre-dates Rome.
After the development of firearms, builders switched to other materials, such as brick, which absorb even greater impacts.
The technique is similar to the modern use of spaced armour on tanks.

Pierre Loti mentions Cooks Travel with disdain for bringing in so
many annoying tourists throughout his travel books from the late 1800s.
He is a wonderful author who had been in the French Foreign Legion.
"Jersalem" and "Egypt" both feature Cooks Travel.
