Man.... i am EXCITED! Sorry for lack of videos all the damn time! Im just really enjoying myself lately and its hard to grab a camera and film. Im getting back into the swing of things though! Also, check out my links all in one place. Added some things you guys might not know about: linktr.ee/kingofdiy
I think you left your sharpie uncapped mate. Anyways, all the love for you and your hobby, I hope to follow in You and Kamp Kenan's footsteps to make my own property with Reptiles and fish, to lean towards conservation, so it's always a pleasure to watch you guys build up your enclosures and tanks!
I feel like we’re all excited by this video of late I feel you seem even more happy making videos than you did years back , for the 375 aquarium I think if you was to grow out a couple of rare snake heads the species is so diverse eventually even if you was to put them in the pond but I definitely feel there a personable fish which is very interesting?
I really miss when you had those peacock bass, i dont think we saw their true potential or beauty. Would love to see you grow out some beautiful peacocks for the aquaponics system though it might be hard to find larger ones
That aquaponics system looks so cool. I can't wait to see your stocking in it. I would love to see Silver Arowana but you should make sure it is a fish that you will love to have in there. Your fish home is looking absolutely phenomenal.
After the public gallery setback, it really feels like you've got your motivation back and it's really great to watch the new gallery coming together. A few platinums with black substrate and back would look extra special maybe shortbody platinum red tail?
So glad to see you are turning those rooms into something you can enjoy. You always seem to be working so hard and not relaxing. I love the idea of a bass tank. There are some beautiful bass out there, and the grow pretty massive. Also really fun to feed. Love the walls you are putting up. Will be great with gray floors. Keep on keeping on.
Definitely a live-bearer community tank (guppies, mollies, platys, sword-tails, endlers and other live-bearers along with some corydoras and other scavengers/alge eaters to reduce tank maintenance ) possibly place some type of moss in the bottom. I'm particular to Christmas moss which I keep in my live-bearer tanks for the fry to hide in, this has really improved the survival of my fry.
What a coincidence of joey doing a aquaponics video. I myself was planning this but mainly because it improves the water quality for my fishes. Great video as always
Thoughts for the hydroponics system: 1) Turtles? Specifically a fly river turtle. I know most people won't be about to get one, but I think it would be sweet if you can land one. 2) Goldfish/Koi . Perfect tank to see them from the side and from above. 3) all of the above, 😀
Tomatoe roots get huge and a few could easily take over that tank. I know because I have done it. Stick to small plants like peppers, lettuce ,microgreens. Look forward to seeing this going forward.
Hey Joey, your videos helped me with a school project back when you started aquaponic videos. I then went on to starting my own aquaponic business and just want to thank you for everything. I am also currently the “fish guy” at a pet store and wish one day to run into you! You’ve helped me through my aquatic journey for years!
I've been enjoying your videos since you first began making them. I'm so happy to see you finally doing something for yourself! I know you'll still do DIY videos because you love the educational part, but it's high time you do what will make you happy too, and for you to enjoy just sitting and watching your fish in a comfortable spot is, I feel, a well deserved endeavor. Good for you, Joey! Also on what to stock in the aquaponice tank..I like the idea of Coi going in there, if it's feasable. Idk, as I've never kept them. Just a thought anyway.
I work in Aquaponics and have a setup on my aquatic turtle enclosure at home. I have a couple suggestions: Once you're sure you like how things are set up, I would switch those pots out for net pots to allow greater water flow around the root systems since you don't have pumps actively circulating water directly around them. Secondly, you will need either a trellis system, OR, and I recommend this one, an overhead string and clip system coming down from the ceiling in order to grow tomatoes and anything else that may need support. I also HIGHLY recommend searching out smaller plant varieties, like patio types, so you don't end up with a 9 foot tall tomato bramble taking over the whole top of your aquarium. You may also find that those single bulb lights have a hard time producing enough UV light to grow sturdy plants. I have some like that in my reptile room ceiling fixtures, but the plants I grow in there are mostly lower light plants, like pothos and spider plants. Things like lettuce and herbs may require more light, and some, like parsley and rosemary, really appreciate more of the red light spectrum. It may take a little searching, but there are affordable panel lights with a bazillion LEDs in them that will likely do a much better job. Herbs that do well in aquaponics settings: Basil, Parsley, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Dill, Chives, Cilantro, Sage, Mint
@@metametameta69 I don't have a studied answer for that, but most of those herbs house the essential oils in their leaves and stems, not so much the roots. I do know that chives roots are just as strong as the rest of the plant though, so if you're worried you could skip that one. If you have sensitive fish you may want to do research on the specific fish and herb combos you're thinking about trying, just in case. But most plants don't release the EO's until cell walls are damaged.
I breed isopods in these tubs, and I gotta say this is a good use for them. I was figuring away to use my 10g aquarium in my grow tent over the winter, and you might've saved me some trouble in the design phase.. Thank you :D
Joey I've been studying aquaponics as part of a macro program to sustainably provide food to communities currently in food deserts so thank you for raising awareness for it as a practice in the microscale.
the new Piranha tank really reminds me of the old rainbow tank, its still my fav! i can't wait for the aquaponic vids, id love to grow some... tomatoes... yes tomatoes, and am very interested how it all works out and what you manage to diy
I would love to see the 2000gallon a reef aquarium one day all with loads of fish and filled with coral it would look amazing and interesting to watch for periods of time
i know i’m late to comment, but tilapia are AWESOME fish to use in aquaponic systems!!! we love using them at my work where we focus on education and new ways to grow things!!
So amazed how you overcome things, first of all. And the things you come up with inspire me constantly! As far as the 375g tank.. I think personally it would be cool to see some sort of catfish in there. Just something different. Best of luck!!
The red tail was great! As it grows you could make changes to the gallery. As you get tired of the current system your building you could make a big pond in the gallery to house it. Do it!!!!!
Are you going to put air stones in those tote to prevent root rot? Tomato plants will have nutrients deficiency, what product will you use to dose? Roman lettuce is a easy veggie to start with in aquaponic. Building a strawberry tower would be super cool, sticking out of a tank. Good luck Joey!
Very cool! Gave me a good idea for how to do the aquaponic setup in my axolotl tank! I bought the cilantro and Italian parsley seeds months ago but haven't actually done anything with them yet since I didn't know how to attach or float the little pots. I think I'll just buy some short storage containers and use the lids kinda like how you did! So thanks
Yes please get another redtail, i love redtails so much. I got my redtail around a year ago because you not only show how amazing the fish are but also you can keep fish appropriately on a budget. I kept my redtail in a 125 for 7 months or so and when she got around a foot long i bought a pool pond for her and my tiger shovelnose. Its a 10x7 pool and for filtration i used a 1/3hp sump pump with a tote as a filter box with two 1 1/4 pvc with uni seals as the outflow. It gives plenty of oxygen and it was around 100 dollar US to build. The heater was the most expensive part and its an in line run through hottub heater that cost me like 125 to buy but winters in my state are a bit rough at times getting into single digits at night and its just in my basement on bare ground. Shes almost 2 foot long now and seems very happy. Now i have to get a better setup for my alligator i picked up a few days ago. Hes a big boy and he needs work, hes a bit angry haha
looks like you are having fun with your hobby again, less worry and more enjoying yourself! :) also for your aquaponics system maybe grow out some Koi? so if you go back to the pond idea you could have some big ones?
My only issue with dividing up the gallery is it's eating a lot of floor space. As long as you enjoy it though, keep it up Joey! Awesome work as always!!
When drilling the hole in the plastic, do it in reverse mode first. Thank me later.. But roots are going to take over that small space quick. And you need flow or bubbles under those pots. Read up on DWC. Looking awesome
Well I will say you are doing a great job reinventing yourself having fun in the gallery. Always look forward to your fish, tanks, and ideas. Love the war room no one gets that those fish are so good looking with there specks of glitter that come off there sides they only get better as they get older. Like the ideas for the sitting room and aquarium room. As far as big fish I like the catfish idea but I would love if you did one with long whiskers a pictus cat, armored catfish colony. You could even move the Oscars in with them. Anyway good work enjoy yourself.
You should try silver sharks for the aquaponics. They are sold as beginner fish in a lot of pet shops in Australia. Bringing the actual knowledge about their final sizes and grouping would be beneficial to alot of beginners in the hobby
A pleasure to follow you, you are so dedicated and educational. 👌 Just a tip, stop pointing in front of the camera all the time, the picture becomes blurry 😉
There is no doubt the gallery is shaping up to be awesome and the aquaponics is a great addition. I've been running an aquaponic aquarium for about 10 years in many iterations and I'm still learning and getting both incredible and terrible results so for what it's worth: - for herbs and leafy greens stocking density isn't that important and it comes down to the ratio between light power and food intake. 1g of food per day can be consumed by plants under 10-30W of LEDs. The top end of that will likely keep nitrates at 0. - for tomatoes and other hungry plants you're going to need a high stocking density, a more herbivore diet and supplementing some nutrients or microorganisms. Or you can make a dual root zone system with some good soil. - most importantly roots will again and again surprise you with their ability to grow up and into things and clog fittings you never even imagined were in danger.
Let’s gooooo!!!! Cant wait for those aquaponics tutorials! I’ve been wanting to turn some of my tanks into aquaponic systems so the videos will be a great help. I would also love to see some red tail catfish again.
A bichir tank with multiple species doing that bichir pile together would be pretty cool. As well as the armored catfish like Megalodoras, Oxydoras, and other big doradids.
I got the exact same thing in my clown loach tank and I'm pretty sure one of your overhead sumps on my cichlid tank thats FULL of peace lillies, the things have gone mental! Looks ace.
How about something different like Bala Sharks, Red-tailed Sharks and Pictus Catfish? A lot of people don’t realize that they get really big! They are also so much fun to watch because they are always moving. I’m so happy you are having such a great time! I don’t mind a few less videos if it means you are enjoying what you are doing!
You know this is gonna be awesome 👏🏻 I mean the only thing that would make it cooler is Joey went way over board and instead of 2 180s if he just had 2 giant L shaped aquariums. 1 salt 1 fresh
as someone who runs aquaponics, it would be a great idea if you put a strip bubbler in each tub between the rows of pots. even with good water circulation I don't think you will get enough around the roots to get enough oxygen around them and the roots will 'drown'. When you do lettuce for example in floating beds the flow is huge. generally clay balls are flood and drain system as you need the air . but everything is an experiment and good luck
Yeah man that's a badass setup for sure 😎 For stocking , just throwing ideas out , group of peacock bass , silver arowana , tiger shovelnose cat , red-tail cat 😁 Obviously all of that together might not work when full grown , worth a try though.
Gonna be pretty sweet when done Joey, only question I have is “how are you gonna get a couch in the 2000gal room when the door way looks like it’s only about 30 inches?”. Other than that, I’m diggin the aquaponics set up on the 375gal, keep the cool videos coming and we’ll all keep watching them!!!
Definitely some catfish! Asian and south American Redtails, shovelnoses, etc. I want to have a circular table tank with large Redtails (kind of like a shark tank but with Redtails). Can't wait to see the finished product!
Before you started explaining that you had built this yourself, I was like "Damn that system looks good I wonder where he bought it?" Must've forgotten who I was watching. (The king) Awesome idea.
I would do a tank of big African Cichlids for the aquaponics setup myself, but if I were going monster fish I'd go with a Mbu puffer with a bunch of tank mates. It would probably be more challenging to go that route than other monster fish, though.
Oh yea massive livebearer! I got into fishkeeping because I think aquapony is pretty cool. Would love to see how you go about a livebearer colony! But it's not a monster tank! oh well.... Dovii are so nice too!
Dude - surface skim the piranha tank and replace the plastic covers with a wide hole mesh, pulled tight across a frame. perhaps with a hole size of half an inch. That way you will maximize the shimmer from your lights. Use a dehumidifier to deal with the evaporation.
This looks fun. I’ve always wanted to set up a system that was complete, a complete ecosystem that cleaned itself using the plants. I studied enough to know to do that I’m going to need to go big but it’s definitely fun to try and I’ve come pretty close I had a tank that lasted two years and all I had to do is feed the fish and add water when it evaporated but eventually it crashed and it was just too small and the changes happened too quickly. I seen a lot of agricultural or homesteading type channels where they create these systems outside on a large scale basis to grow their food as well as their fish to eat and The goal there is also to create a complete enclosed ecosystem but you have to study a lot on your plants because different plants eat different amounts of nutrients at different rates so it kind of adds a whole new twist to the science and fun side of it and it’s definitely a cool twist. Do you get tired of planted tank send Aquascape to sticks and rocks after a while home. This is an interesting twist where we can learn something again
You honestly make me want to keep fish again. I've been lowkey thinking at the back of my mind how great it would be to have an aquarium behind me in my virtual meetings with schooling fish and one or two featured bigger fish in there. And now the possibility of growing food on top of them?? Man. And here I thought years ago fish keeping wasn't for me, that I couldn't keep a fish alive... The more I follow you the more i think maybe I was just never showed how to do it properly in a way that has an easy upkeep. Maybe I could have that thank behind me.....
Joe I grow Hydroponically u must consider water temperature to prevent root rot . Looking forward to see u grow kool stuff 😎👍 I use k1 filters in my system.
Potential monsters for the Aquaponics tank; >Gar. Spotten or Florida Gar would be a good fit for the size. Though I know Spotted are a protected species in Canada so it might not be easy to stock. >Koi. Some colorful Asian Carp would be eyecatching. >Crayfish. Why limit yourself to just fish? Some Crustaceans would work nicely. >Sharks. A small school of Harlequins, Violet Blushings or Silver Apollos would be pretty neat.
Cool project. It looks like you could have spaced out the planters more in each tub, providing more elbow room for the plants. I look forward to watching it progress.
Hi Joey, I'm glad the gallery is finally a relaxing place for you and family. The way it always should be. I'm excited for what's to come. One thing i've always wanted to ask you ever since you stopped talking about them in your videos. How are your goldfish doing? Do you still have that blue jay's problem with the pond. Just curious.
Always love your videos and what you are doing at the moment is amazing. When you a completed it have you thought of doing some 360 videos of the room so we can feel what they are like
I’m so happy you have put up a new video I haven’t been able to go to members only because I broke my phone gotta have it fixed hopefully sooner than later. You are a man to be reckoned with you are incredible I understand exactly what you’re doing you’re so smart. i’ve been kind of out of touch not only because of my phone but because on September 13 I had major back surgery and I’m still in rehab hopefully gonna go home in the next couple of days hopefully. Anyway wonderful video always enjoy always always always thank you.🤗😻❣️
I would still like to see you livestream with underwater cameras 24 hrs. You could have different channels and also move the camera around between tanks. It would be fascinating to watch seahorses, rays, etc for hours.
Looks like you may have drilled the holes for the pots a little large. Once the plants have some heft they may be too heavy and push through the lid. Just a thought. Looks awesome.
Yow joey just some info we here in the Caribbean use the colored talapia as for nutrients for your plants are fantastic .They are like predators and they grow pretty large .But great set up bro giving me some ideas that i am going to try especially now with this food shortage we beginning to see .Big up to you brother 👊
I'm do the same thing with lettuce. Only suggestion I have is keep the roots shaded. Roots don't like a ton of light or algae growing on them. Also get some kind of trellis for the maters. They can grow hella high

Can’t wait to see this new layout, Fired Up!!!
Love all your doing. Mostly love that your doing it the way that you want.
Tiger shovelnose catfish would be my recommendation - grows fast, looks cool.
Ooh man, I missed the old Arowana intro. This was soo cool 🤌😻
It would be pretty cool if you got a Dovii or an Umbee cichlid. Beautiful fish and they get huge. Maybe even Festae.
5:18 this just gave me a very Canadian "tomato" plant idea 💡😂
Miss excited Joey. Awesome plans, what I'd do if I had the space
You know this is gonna be awesome 👏🏻 I mean the only thing that would make it cooler is Joey went way over board and instead of 2 180s if he just had 2 giant L shaped aquariums. 1 salt 1 fresh
I loved that tank the most when it was full of rainbows. I know…not monster fish, but it was so beautiful
as someone who runs aquaponics, it would be a great idea if you put a strip bubbler in each tub between the rows of pots. even with good water circulation I don't think you will get enough around the roots to get enough oxygen around them and the roots will 'drown'.
Pothos is pretty cool. Another cool plant to use is Peace Lilly. I've got one on my 75G.
Always excited to watch your builds
It is great to see you enjoying what you are doing! We benefit from great content!!
Looks amazing joey coming up like a dream my suggestion for the 375 stocking silver perch or a snooke lol
Oh yea massive livebearer! I got into fishkeeping because I think aquapony is pretty cool. Would love to see how you go about a livebearer colony! But it's not a monster tank! oh well.... Dovii are so nice too!
Always enjoy your content Joey! Thanks and keep them coming
Kudos for sticking with the hobby for so long dude. Well done.
Love the video! I've been considering an aquaponic system for years so I'm invested in this project for sure!
I really loved the red tail catfish, please its such a badass
You honestly make me want to keep fish again. I've been lowkey thinking at the back of my mind how great it would be to have an aquarium behind me in my virtual meetings with schooling fish and one or two featured bigger fish in there. And now the possibility of growing food on top of them?? Man. And here I thought years ago fish keeping wasn't for me, that I couldn't keep a fish alive... The more I follow you the more i think maybe I was just never showed how to do it properly in a way that has an easy upkeep. Maybe I could have that thank behind me.....
Way to go Joey, can’t wait to see the final result!!
Joe I grow Hydroponically u must consider water temperature to prevent root rot .
Looking forward to see u grow kool stuff 😎👍 I use k1 filters in my system.
Potential monsters for the Aquaponics tank;
>Gar.
I had to laugh a little at the playbutton being in the stuff you always lose area. Loving how the piranah tank looks
When you a completed it have you thought of doing some 360 videos of the room so we can feel what they are like
I kind of liked it when you had it all open but again like you say it's what you want to do and that's what's amazing
This is the content i like to see DIY, and who is better than the man himself KING OF DIY🔥
Way to utilize space , looks great so far ...keep it coming
Primitive fish would look good with the plants. Bichirs, lungfish, or the like would look good and fit that big tank. Take care.
Everything looks amazing and I am very jealous
You should do Koi with the aquaponics... or some long flowy fish to keep the relaxed tranquil vibe with the plants.
