My brother had "favorited" this video about a year and a half ago, and told my dad about this cover and singer. We lost my brother through an unexpected accident in October of last year. Listening to this song reminds me of those we've lost too soon, as well as the tribulations their loved ones must go through when they are left behind. Nothing is left the same. Elliot must have been a beautiful person. Such a wonderful video, and such an honor to have known this song, even without knowing him.
Such an apt song of Cat Stevens for him to cover. I only saw Elliott Smith play once. He was sitting in with Grandaddy at a show in SF at the Warfield--some time in the early 2000s. He played, or tried to play a solo acoustic version of Needle in the Hay, but he was clearly out of his head--looked to be smacked out--and he couldn't play the intricate guitar parts--kept starting and stopping. Thankfully, the guys in Grandaddy stepped in and started playing the part for him, allowing him just to sing, which he did like an angel. Such a tortured life--I'm eternally grateful that he gifted us with his brilliance whilst enduring such spiritual pain.
Thanks so much for this post Andrea. It must have been both wonderful and heartbreaking to have seen him play back then. But at least you got to see him play live :)
thanks h20st. i got to see him once in Lower Alcatraz and he played like he had already broken the knife off in his heart. it was difficult to watch. thankfully i was in the same boat as he and don't remember much.
Trouble Oh trouble set me free I have seen your face And it’s too much too much for me Trouble Oh trouble can’t you see You’re eating my heart away And there’s nothing much left of me I’ve drunk your wine You have made your world mine So won’t you be fair So won’t you be fair I don’t want no more of you So won’t you be kind to me Just let me go where I’ll have to go there Trouble Oh trouble move away I have seen your face And it’s too much for me today Trouble Oh trouble can’t you see You have made me a wreck Now won’t you leave me in my misery I’ve seen your eyes And I can see death’s disguise Hangin’ on me Hangin’ on me I’m beat, I’m torn Shattered and tossed and worn Too shocking to see Too shocking to see Trouble Oh trouble move from me I have paid my debt Now won’t you leave me in my misery Trouble Oh trouble please be kind I don’t want no fight And I haven’t got a lot of time
I could be wrong, I am fairly sure this was Elliott's final recording in his lifetime. Recorded about a week before his passing. Adds more of a haunting element to the final line of the song... " i don't want no fighting, and i haven't got alot of time"
I was disappointed with this song at first as it didn't live up to my expectations of cat steven's version but as it's Elliott Smith I stuck with it, now I love it just as much but in a different way.
So damn depressing listening to this song, it's like it was made for Elliott. One of the last songs he ever recorded, and according to his girlfriend, he'd cry recording it. There's the ironic fact that the song has the same title of another cover Elliott did by his one-time friend, Jon Brion, whom he collaborated with for years until Elliott stupidly became a junkie. There's also the fact that Cat Stevens' last name is the same as Elliott's real first name except with an 's' at the end. Finally, there's the fact that the last line says "I don't want no fight, and I haven't got a lot of time," which was true for Elliott because he died only a few weeks after recording this song, and I believe it was a suicide. 😢

I lost my brother too last July.

natmuthify man I can’t even imagine losing my brother, I’m so sorry for your loss
I hope we all lost out brothers one day
I am here to say elliott’s voice gets us through grief and very special, special people are elliott fans.
This is a banger to cry to.

Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt experience. I love both Elliott and Grandaddy, it would've been a pleasure to have seen them both live.
I just got screwed on my last paycheck from work and it's so good to hear real stories, instead of corporate greed and petty annoyances.
He may not have been smacked out... Could have just been suffering mentally. Can appear the same 😔😢
I listened to his music through out my teens and starting of adulthood. Elliott helped me with life. I wish he was still here.
Me too.
this is what music was meant for. absolutely soul clutching.
Elliott had always picked the best songs to do covers with.
I think this song was always meant for him
its official- he is the most beautiful artist i have yet discovered
Trouble
Oh trouble set me free
I have seen your face
And it’s too much too much for me
Trouble
Oh trouble can’t you see
You’re eating my heart away
And there’s nothing much left of me
I’ve drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won’t you be fair
So won’t you be fair
I don’t want no more of you
So won’t you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I’ll have to go there
Trouble
Oh trouble move away
I have seen your face
And it’s too much for me today
Trouble
Oh trouble can’t you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won’t you leave me in my misery
I’ve seen your eyes
And I can see death’s disguise
Hangin’ on me
Hangin’ on me
I’m beat, I’m torn
Shattered and tossed and worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see
Trouble
Oh trouble move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won’t you leave me in my misery
Trouble
Oh trouble please be kind
I don’t want no fight
And I haven’t got a lot of time

Really captured the original version and improved it!
it's on the 'Thumbsucker' soundtrack... i love this song! i love this cover!
Could this be more perfect?
thinking of you on New Year's, Elliott.
You he's dead right? And even if he were alive, it is doubtful he would come across a random comment under one of his lesser known songs
@@averagejohnson3985 we know he's gone. kinda insesitve :((
new years 2021. thinking of him.
@@averagejohnson3985 What does that have to do with anything?
Brilliant!!! I usually don't like other people covering Steven's music but this was PERFECT
The funny thing is that elliot’s original name was Steven
So good
Miss you Elliott
well played, sir, well played...
What beauty

tremendo cuento

my heart is so broken
From a favorite Movie
The vocals are great
damn....
@tripitydoda i think is just double tracking vocals with a little delay
Cat Stevens, of course.:-)
crazy talent this guy. sadly to say the more sad he was the more creative he became
omg..I forgot he'd covered this song.
Who did this originally?
cat stevens
this is so fucking good
Joel Haver used a cover of this song to great effect in a video. It hits like a truck
I love this version than Cat Steven's one. E.S. always play much better than the originator in the covers
❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is real music Elliott....
Hey upload more like this? ❤
YOUNG DILL
not a single one. amazing huh? he is like that in every song

its tuned a half step down
Why is there a picture of him playing the piano when he is playing guitar on the song!?
That's clearly a piano
Sounds like a guitar to me
does he use an open tuning for this??
probably a long time but original is played half step down and this sounds the same
Doubt it, sounds like fairly normal, first- position chords here.
Lol trying to make sense of everything and making expectations = trouble
Why is your avatar a HS graduation photo of some weirdo from the 80's?
So Beatles coded
