1962. My brother John was killed by a drunk driver when he was 18. He had just met his girlfriend Sheila. I have never forgotten every word to this song. And I've never forgotten John.
Met a cute Filipino girl in 1991...Sheila..was 19 years old...fell in love..but she had been "working" the bars in Angeles City Philippines since age 13...😢...she was popping pills, drinking beer with a straw in the bottle... suffice it to say I couldn't control her...we broke up after she cheated on me .. about 8 years later they found her dead from AIDs...very sad tale..all true...I tried to change her for the good....but the bar owners, other girls, people... didn't like that...now...she's dead....😮😢
I know it still hurts 42 yrs later. As long as you remember your brother ,whether by memory or the song Shiela,he’s still alive in your heart and with you always.
LUV Tommy Roes song dizzy. I watch his video on you tube every night before I go to bed. in 1969 I was 21 years old. Dizzy is my favourite songs he recorded.
Wow ! I have not heard this since '62 when I was 12years old (and a half) and now I can TURN UP the volume and seriously rock out...the fire is still there !
Same here. I am now 73 and remember this from1962, also the year Marilyn Monroe died. I like the backing singers here and of course the relentless drumming.
I never knew Tommy Roe did this song. I was also 12 years old in 1962. I remember going to the stock car races with my dad in Waukegan Illinois listening to the song.
-He should be about in our age group . And it's not unusual to live to 90 if you don't smoke and quit drinking when you were in your forty's. Plus eating the right foods. Joys to us all that lived in the great 60's.
I was 7 years old when this was a hit in 1962 but I grew up on this music thanks to older siblings born in the 40's especially one brother who was 17 and rebellious (jelly roll hair up front and ducktail in the back) and would turn the radio on and UP when he got home from high school. At least it was on and UP until Dad got home and turned it off.
@paulinek9764 Tommy Roe first released this song in the late 1950's without the "Buddy Holly" touches or embellishments, & it didn't take off. Several years later & a couple of years after Buddy Holly's death, Tommy Roe's producer suggested, that there were still a lot of people around who wanted the Buddy Holly sound, so he insisted, that Tommy re-release "Sheila", but change it to make it sound like Buddy Holly. Roe reluctantly did it, because he was a Buddy Holly fan & thought it might be disrespectful to the memory of Holly. The second time around, "Sheila" went to #1.
This hit from Tommy Roe went to #1 on the Top 40 charts. It also went to #1 in Australia and in Canada. It went to #3 in the United Kingdom, and to #9 in Germany. It would finish at #22 for the year, 1962. The numbers are getting smaller and the hits are getting bigger. Who will be #1? Will Bobby Lewis repeat? Or will a new act take the torch? Stay tuned.

In 1965 there was a two-day show that came to town called 'The Dick Clark Caravan of Stars'. The second night was the Rolling Stones but the first night was a collection of pop stars of the era including the Shangri Las, Dave Ckark Five, and of course Tommy Roe. Great shows!
The ABC recording of the song is done in the style of the Lubbock sound, made popular by Buddy Holly and the Crickets in the late 1950s; the strumming pattern, tempo, drumming, and chords (both songs are in the key of A) bear particularly strong resemblance to the Crickets' “Peggy Sue"; Roe's vocals are similar to Holly's. The song became the title track of Tommy Roe's debut studio album, Sheila, in 1962. - wikipedia
I love this song. It’s one of the few “Sheila” songs that I love. It’s one of the good memories I have of my biological father and I hate the song “Oh Sheila”.

One of many songs that I used to listen to growing up that inspired me to play the drums. Simple yet driving rhythm.
Dizzy was the first song I learned to play on the drums , I was nine years old
Reminiscent of Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" and just as good.

Tommy Roe thank you for your beautiful music !!! One of the best 👌
I first heard this song in the 70s. I've loved it ever since.

My favorite song as a little boy. So when I was a big boy I married Sheila. 40 years later, man this little girl is mine.
I was 14 years old when this song came out, and I decided one day I’d have a baby girl and name her Sheila. I did too..

I can’t help thinking of Buddy Holly’s PEGGY SUE when I hear this.
I was 10 yrs old in 1962
Two of the best songs from that era !
The song is a blatant Buddy Holly imitation.
What a great memory from the 60s,this song is Tommy Roe’s best by a mile,it reminds me a lot of Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly.
Great to hear it again.

He was very popular in Germany in the sixties. Fabulous time.

This version is better.
My favorite song in 1962.
Been forever since I’ve heard this song
I remember hearing this back in 1974, but it was old then. Have you ever seen Tommy Roe and Benny Hill at the same time? 🙂
And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west.

My daughters name is Shana. When she was little I would sing this song to her and change Sheila to Shana. She hated it. LOL
I know that's not the Crickets backing him, but WOW!
Maybe Preston Epps on Bongos. Ah, could be Doc ,could be !
I read somewhere that the backup band were the Crickets themselves.
Just love this.

1965 ! This could have been a hit if we had no
British Invasion.
Listened in Germany ❤
Excellent titre, sans doute l'original.
Gosh there's a lot of Buddy Holly - Peggy Sue - in that song (or vice versa)
