It’s most likely a cry out to God, I’ve grown up ok Skillet, and although I don’t listen as much as I used to, I know they are still very open about their faith and Christianity, they consider themselves Christian rock as well! The songs they make though can be interpreted however the listener wants, they want people of every walk of life to get some meaning that helps them!

The fact that John is manic depressive and a lot of his own personal struggles come out in his music. The entirety of the Collide album was written during one of his episodes, that's why it's so raw and heavy compared to everything that came before it.
@@Hansen_0101 Since they hit mainstream success with Comatose, they took a step back from being so in your face about it. Most of their songs since then have been a bit more veiled in their message and can be left open to interpretation of the listener.

Skillet is a Christian band, yes, so there is a lot of faith based symbolism behind their lyrics. This song in particular is about personal struggle. That feeling of being on the edge of breaking whether it be from anxiety or depression or stress or relationship. The first bars of the second verse, “peel back the skin exposed to you, take pleasure in the pain.” Is talking about opening up and acknowledging what’s going on underneath and accepting that it his painful to expose that about yourself. “Tell me what I’m supposed to do, it ain’t easy to open up this way.” Calling out for help because you don’t know how to handle the vulnerability and pain that you’re going through. Love this song and the lyrics. As much as this is about our struggles with sin as Christians and reaching out to God in our darkest moments to save us for eternity, it is about our struggles as humans and finding that person that we can open up to and can theoretically save us from out detrimental thoughts and feelings about ourselves.
They are amazing live just as much energy and they sound just the same. The crowd was vibrating during there whole set. They were the headliner for Winter Jam a couple of years ago.

To me Skillet is the best unknown band in this world. So many people have never heard of them, but love them as soon as they hear their songs, definitely not for everyone, but their music speaks to people, positive, encouraging and get back on your feet and fight back against the world that's trying to continuously knock you back down, music.
