I’ve never really had much of an interest in BMWs. Jonny has a way though of educating and spreading his enthusiasm of good motors throughout an audience. That’s exactly what’s happened to me again with this vid. What a beautiful set of cars!
@@althejazzmanThey have unique century+ history & their success with M have led to most if not all other manufacturers creating rwd. performance divisions. Yes, this is M1 (which would power original M5 & M6), but BMW won 1940 Mille Miglia with original 328, 1 of their 1st cars. Also, Batmobile CSL donated drivetrain to M, even if they weren't marketed that way themselves. Simultaneously Paul Bracq designed inspiration for M1 with 4 cyl Turbo Concept.
My comment is slightly different. I took delivery of one of the first M1’s destined for UK in 1980 and sold my last BMW - an E30 - to Munich Legends in 1999. So your video brought back many happy memories. Thank you so much.
Yes - by good luck! I was stationed in West Germany when the M1 was featured in Autocar as being only available in local dealers. My local had to call Munich who confirmed one was allocated to them so I ordered - no deposit required in those days ! But then there were prolonged delays while BMW tried to fix the location of manufacture. By the time I was back in England and given up any thought of ownership. So, some years later when a call came through from Munich that my car was ready to collect, my wife and I jumped on a train and next day were driving home via Paris. (When new the air conditioning worked well!) In 1980 the only other car in England was owned by Nick Mason the drummer. We were both invited to attend Procar events to promote the brand. Soon I got an attractive offer to sell and even though I enjoyed speeding around the country, and doing over 160mph on the M1! I eventually sold the car to the present ruler of the UAE. A wonderful experience.
M1 still looks amazing all these years later - only ever seen one in the glass fibre myself - cos I've been to the Munich museum - thanks for gr8 content
Speaking of the head-on poster, I remember having one, M1 in a dark colour (no Concorde) that I put on my bedroom wall as a boy. I think the ad headline text read 'Take the M1 to Birmingham' as I recall this was commented on in the car press as inaccurate, you'd be taking the M6. The BMW Marketing department were probably bored of hearing that from car pedants ever since. I subsequently won one in a local competition. Don't get too excited, it was a radio controlled model. An M1 wasn't advertised as the first prize but I was given the choice of selecting a przie from the model shop radio controlled stock (no Tamiya unfortunately), and I was so happy to see their largest model was an M1 in silver with M Sport stripes. I was a very happy 12 year old. Still hoping to control a full size one at some point.
Regarding modern BMW front ends, you tell it like it is Jonny! So many reviewers tentatively verbalise it but BMW need it in firmer terms, a “gopping mess” sums it up perfectly!
It is shocking how ugly BMWs now are after decades of restrained considered design which the rest of the automotive world looked at admiringly... Like you, there isn't a new single one I would consider. Loved the i3 but that was the last one I consider attractive.
I am Irish and I have been to Munich Legends many times , I bought my 1998 M3 EVO in London 22 years ago it has 34,000 miles on it and totally like new. I also own a 2007 E63 M6 with 27,000 miles on it that I bought in Scotland 13 years ago. I agree with you about there not being any good looking BMW's anymore. I only saw a small bit of Munich Legends I didn't see the huge part at the rear. It is a fascinating place I read about it years before I saw it in 2004.My sister and brother in law visit Heaven Farm I was with them and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Munich Legends a few yards down the road from Heaven Farm. I took a loan of my sisters car and drove back there to have a look ! I also own a 2018 M3 Competition which is the best looking 4 door sports car ever made it has only 8,000 miles on it. Thank you for a very enjoyable episode. There was an M1 in the garage the first day I visited Munich Legends I have pics I took of it still an absolutely beautiful car today !
I started driving BMW's back in the 70's in Vermont,(the ones with round tail lights), and still remember the massive amount of fun they provided! This was am absolute joy to watch and you can feel the emotion the owner has for this "vintage" dealership. So many limited production cars from back when they really were the "Ultimate Driving Machine". Thank you for stirring up the memories.
BMW used to make such cool cars. I remember when they launched the M1. It's more or less as good looking and fresh now, which is absolutely insane. ...and I watched some M1 races too, back in the day. Great video good sir. Lots of cars that got me excited. What a cool place.
My local BMW garage. They are indeed legends. I've seen those parts racks first hand. I reckon at least a balljoint in that M1 belongs to me with the amount I have spent in there on parts in the past :D There's a whole series to be made in that yard
I need to move to the UK when I retire and locate myself somewhere close to Munich Legends - I think my M635 and E30 would feel quite comfortable there! Thanks for a great drive! I love how similar the M1 sounds to the M88/3 in my M635 - it's fun having a little piece of that heritage in my garage. :)
30 yrs since I stood in that showroom talking to Barney and Tony Halse after spending an hour out in an e12 M535i - bought one elsewhere in the end and had an amzing time with it before selling it back to guy that sold it to me. Happy, Happy days! Nice work as always Jonny 🙂
Nice one :) Passionate ppl at Munich Legends, that's clear! I'm also looking forward to the Neue Klasse! That design language is going into the right direction again!
Thanks so much Johnny. Great episode. The M1, is for me one of the best. I'm lucky to own an 86 E28 M535i . The 70's, 80's and 90's it really was the golden era of BMW.
Circa 1981, whilst I was frequently transporting (driving) new Porsches across the U.S. of A. for the largest P+A dealership in the country, I decided to walk across the street to a BMW dealership to introduce myself and look for additional transporting gigs. In their showroom was an M-1, which wasn't street-legal in the U.S. of A. at the time. During the next couple of years, I was paid to transport a variety of new BMW models hither and yon. Thanks for the video content, Jonny.
Another great episode thank you mate! What a fantastic place Munich Legends is - totally dedicated to the best of BMW. I was sorry when the 36 minutes was over. 👌
I'm not a BMW guy buuuuuut... When i was a kid, I had a toy BMW Turbo with opening gullwing doors and I loved that thing to bits. My parents took me to Spa-Francorchamps in the late '70s to watch an F1 race. As we walked around, we came across a parked BMW M1 and I thought it was my toy come to life. I got my picture with it, of course. I've always loved both the Turbo and the M1.
@21:20. ''Wait, put it back in third gear and give it more ...'' This is SO true of this M88 engine. I have an M635CSi and the way it pulls in third is amazing and intoxicating. What an incredible NA race engine...A true legend.
I've senen an M1 for several years on a daily basis in a BMW showroom near Breda, the Netherlanda. Cycled many times past it. The cyclepath went closer to the dealership comapaired to the road (for cars) passing by it. What a lovely sight it was. What a great design. Was about 15 years ago. Wonder if it's still there.
This was very enjoyable to watch. I have owned BMWs for many years and currently have an E12, and it's incredible to see how the company changed in the last 50 years.
Several years ago I went to Germany solely to visit auto museums and factories. The day I was at BMW they had all of the "Art"Cars on display. Traditionally each artist was given a model to work from, then sign painters would go to work transforming the car into a piece of art. Along comes Andy Warhol with his supplies, fully intending to hand paint the M1 assigned to him! It was so beautiful, I had to touch it. So I did. Normally I am respectful of the rules, here the temptation was too great
That is much a gorgeous car, memories of childhood. Love Giorgio Giugiaro designs, I call it's 80's wedge. On their website saying ooooh only £30k for the 2002 tii 😂
That intro 😮😮😮 For a proper BM fangirl like me, I was gone just at the hint of a tour of those incredible specimens 🥰 I’d move into Munich Legends just to sit there and be amongst them 🥰
I believe this is because BMW was, for the longest time, the gold standard for combining elegance with sportiness, which makes it all the more disappointing.
I went to the National Automobile Museum in Mulhouse, France, in 1989 because they had one of only two BMW 1972 Turbo Concept cars on display. It was worth the trip, one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen.
I adore the M1. It's always fascinated me. I don't care if it isn't blisteringly quick; most cars at the time weren't, it just looks like a car full of the sensations of driving. And then it looks and sounds like that! You're a lucky SSG Mr Smith!
As a life long BMW fan I can confidentially tell you that the current state of BMW is absolute trash garbage along the entire model line.2016 was the final nail in the coffin.
The m2 looks fresh out of a JDM tuner catalog... And I own a half dozen BMW's that are on the road. Don't get me wrong, I like the m2, the newest one just lacks the BMW design language.
Great video Jonny. Entertaining and educational. I could listen to Dan all day!

What a Great Episode! We had BMWs as from 1970 onwards, but I remember, having the first M1 in Switzerland in exactly that same orange colour, you show, in our village in 1979. Each way to school and back, I made a detour to verify, if the M1 stands in front of that house! I was definitely my poster car!
Back in the late 1980s, there was a white M1 that was usually sitting in the parking lot at the Lakers-Kings practice facility in El Segundo, California. Always looked epic!
Amazing place & yet another great video Johnny, fantastic to see the 2002 out the back, takes me back a few years ..... The first car I ever drove was it's baby brother the 2000 back in 1988 but because I couldn't afford the insurance for the BMW 2000 I then went and bought my first car, a Ford Escort MK 1, 1.1litre (YXC 668 K) in which I then passed my driving test in Jan 1989.
That pre F1 support race idea is magic. They should have that today. Top 10 from qualifying, 10 identical cars from a random supporting manufacturer and away they go.
What a cool experience you found your self in. Awesome. BMW forgot how to make cars for people after the E36 sadly. They quickly got obsessed with tech, over complicating things, and cheaping out on material, but still charging a badge premium. BMW just lost me. We all know they can still build a great car. But I think they need to send the R&D department, engineers, and designers out to this gallery, and make them spend a week tapping into the heritage. Driving it, feeling it, experiencing it, hearing it, smelling it, living it. Mini is about the only thing that BMW has that still seem to have some soul left in it. But you can see that soul slowly getting sucked out of it in favor of TFT Screens.
You in Great Britain have the unique opportunity to drive a M1 on the M1. We here in Germany can only drive some Audis on the A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and so on. Boring. 😉
Every time I see a vintage BMW video it makes me think of I think Kipling's The Fingersmith. It's a short story, look it up and read it. It's magic. My spine is tingling right now.
I had one of these albeit remote controlled in the early 80's when a kid. BMW M1-G4. Loved it, flip up lights, indicators, and reverse lights all worked, and it was quick. Nostalgia! Nice video Johnny.
My mates got one of these, he bought it new here in France. I've always admired it, who wouldn't !, but untill you explained, I really didn't know just what an exceptional car it was, it's always been his daily driver ! 😂 I'm going to forward this to him, I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Top banana as usual, hats off to you !
I've always loved the design of these. Some similarities to the cool looking 850i but a car you never ever see anywhere. Man, I wish to photograph one of these some day
Amazing garage run by passionate people. I too have overlooked BMW for years but have just got my first one..640D and it’s a joyous thing as far away from a Smokey ol diesel you could get.
Great video Jonny and you could have filmed for 2 hours and held my attention. I live just across the border in Kent (Tunbridge Wells) and can confirm Dan’s distain for East Sussex County Council Highways dept…they should be ashamed of themselves in letting roads become so piss-poor (I’m a cyclist as well as a petrolhead and often on my bike near Munich Legends and frankly the state of the road surfaces are a real danger) A good friend of mine used to have a BMW dealership in Tunbridge Wells and I think he still has an M1 (Dan will know who I’m talking about) and I keep meaning to blag a ride in it. If you need more encouragement Jonny then I think legions of your followers would happily see you back at Munich Legends for more in-depth footage.
@ Jonny, you’re very welcome…if ever you want to do a feature on an interesting air cooled 911 that although a U.K. car lived in Monaco for many years and was owned by a man who got pulled by Les Flics on the Cannonball Run then drop me a line…lots of provenance and some very evocative photos of its time spent in the glitzy ski resorts and frozen lakes back in the 90’s 😎
Absolute dream car for me. Had the red white and blue liveried racing version on my pencil case as a primary school lad. Loved the vintage racing footage with them in action, but that red 'road going' version is pure late-70s 🔥
I'd never really considered the M1 in terms of styling but you're absolutely bang on - it avoids all of the pitfalls of 70s wedge mania & still looks amazing now. Very refined & cohesive. Completely the opposite to the actual development & delivery of the car itself!
I remember as a teen carefully cutting out various adverts from my Road & Track periodicals, I distinctly remember one, the image of the that glorious 3.5l M Power straight 6.
Came for the M1 but also enjoyed reminding myself what summer in a pub garden looks like.. already seems an eternity ago. Top drawer content as always Jonny :)
I missed out on an E30 M3 Evo Sport a few decades ago, and it wasn't just any old M3 Eco Sport, it was once owned by the Director of BMW UK and it was up for 16.5k and I still wake up in a sweaty mess over 20 years on.
This is when BMW made great looking cars 👍🏻. I’m no Beemer fan boy, but pass Munich Legends every weekend, and just am drop jawed at some of the cars in the showroom. I guess I appreciate the older BMW’s as an old boss had an orange 2002tii, and that was such a good looking car. I really do need to stop off one day 😊
Always loved BMW’s.Regretted selling my E30 3series and E28 5 series.Determined to buy another I recently purchased a M135 rear wheel drive model.Absolutely love driving this car.
Great show Jonnie! I have loved BMW coupes since the 2002. Took me a long time to own one as I was having too much fun with the Japanese marques. Now own a F23 cabriolet and love it.
Around 1988 we had the BMW "Art" Cars exhibited at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. The M1 was the Andy Warhol painted one. It looked like a real rough paint job but suited it and couldn't take away from the Design.
I saw an M1 sitting in the grass at Portland, international Raceway, historic races, and was gob smacked at how clean the lines were. never realized how rare they were. Also, at the same race there is a 289 cobra with a cracked windshield and ratty old paint sitting in the grass as well. Let’s just bring these out to the races this weekend and not rope them off or anything. So cool to see how laid back the owners were about such cool cars.
I drove past Munich Legends many times when I lived in the area, although I was heavily into Alfa's and saw no reason to visit. I even remember when they were based a bit further up the road, on the A22. Never realised that there were so many buildings behind the one facing the road.
Utterly mind blowing, absolutely fantastic video! I’m gutted that I live in the States and can’t drop in to see these amazing BMWs. Keep up the great work! Cheers
I was 20 years old when I bought my first BMW, a 1985 E30 318. I’d taken a move with a work placement to Swindon and knew nobody. To kill time I would often drive down to Dick Lovett BMW and remember seeing a 2nd hand white M1 in their showroom, pride of place. I fell in love with it and dreamt of how I could own it but that it never happened. Still love it to this day.
Great vid thanks, perfect amount of history, info about the models and driving. Love the shot from over your shoulder as you run through the gears. Could only have been improved by getting a separate mic nearer the engine. Please go back and drive some of the others….
Maybe we shall go back and film some more unicorn BMW drives - what do you think?

Great business Dan has there.....
Love this car. And the K1 motorbike they did which has the same vibe.
Back in the late 1980s, there was a white M1 that was usually sitting in the parking lot at the Lakers-Kings practice facility in El Segundo, California. Always looked epic!
Who owned that we wonder?
Love the old school BMWs (own an E86) and this is absolutely brilliant.
Thanks Jonny Smith! Loved watching this video as its an older BMW shape that were the best. Watching from Adelaide, South Australia.
Now here's something to watch more than twice!
Superb job, Johnny and crew. 👌
@10:49 it makes that Micra look massive. Keep it up Jonny!
Oh M1 goodness
You in Great Britain have the unique opportunity to drive a M1 on the M1. We here in Germany can only drive some Audis on the A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and so on. Boring. 😉
Every time I see a vintage BMW video it makes me think of I think Kipling's The Fingersmith. It's a short story, look it up and read it. It's magic. My spine is tingling right now.
Yeah I sure do remember that. The trouble is I think BMW may have forgotten that slogan.
What a treat! Have owned so many including an 02 tii turbo... Thanks Jonny 🎉❤
I had one of these albeit remote controlled in the early 80's when a kid. BMW M1-G4. Loved it, flip up lights, indicators, and reverse lights all worked, and it was quick. Nostalgia! Nice video Johnny.
Great Video Johnny.... love how you manage to go from the passenger seat to the driver and back again within the click of my fingers! Neat Trick!
I try to please....
My mates got one of these, he bought it new here in France. I've always admired it, who wouldn't !, but untill you explained, I really didn't know just what an exceptional car it was, it's always been his daily driver ! 😂
I'm going to forward this to him, I'm sure he'll appreciate it.
Top banana as usual, hats off to you !
Incredible showroom and a fantastic owner, great video full of absolute dream cars.
One of your all time best videos. Amazing to see all of the BMWs. M1, Alpina, M3, M5. Thanks!!
I live just across the border in Kent (Tunbridge Wells) and can confirm Dan’s distain for East Sussex County Council Highways dept…they should be ashamed of themselves in letting roads become so piss-poor (I’m a cyclist as well as a petrolhead and often on my bike near Munich Legends and frankly the state of the road surfaces are a real danger)
A good friend of mine used to have a BMW dealership in Tunbridge Wells and I think he still has an M1 (Dan will know who I’m talking about) and I keep meaning to blag a ride in it.
If you need more encouragement Jonny then I think legions of your followers would happily see you back at Munich Legends for more in-depth footage.
Thank you for the message. Glad you enjoyed this one. Strangely low views, but knowing those who watched have really dined out on it mean a lot.
I saw this car at Croft in the summer. Absolutely stunning.
I'd never really considered the M1 in terms of styling but you're absolutely bang on - it avoids all of the pitfalls of 70s wedge mania & still looks amazing now. Very refined & cohesive. Completely the opposite to the actual development & delivery of the car itself!
I'd love to see the single wiper in action!
What a car.
What a classic BMW dealership!
Another fab watch sir!
My overriding memory of the M1 is the BASF advert with the Thin Lizzy soundtrack!
I remember as a teen carefully cutting out various adverts from my Road & Track periodicals, I distinctly remember one, the image of the that glorious 3.5l M Power straight 6.
So cool. They are true unicorns.
Came for the M1 but also enjoyed reminding myself what summer in a pub garden looks like.. already seems an eternity ago. Top drawer content as always Jonny :)
I love the M1, what a great car, especially with the ProDrive body kit (I don't lke most body kits). Great review Jonny, thanks. :)
Thanks for watching 👍🏽
What a stunning set up! Dream dealership for me given the BS of today! I always thought the M1 alloys looked like 70's Reel to Reel tape spools
I missed out on an E30 M3 Evo Sport a few decades ago, and it wasn't just any old M3 Eco Sport, it was once owned by the Director of BMW UK and it was up for 16.5k and I still wake up in a sweaty mess over 20 years on.
Excellent vid, the M1 was great but Munich Legends walkabout was excellent.
Great video Johnny! Loved the tour of Munich Legends!
A wedding cake of louvres is not a combination of words I ever thought to hear. Delightful Johnny.
Great show Jonnie! I have loved BMW coupes since the 2002. Took me a long time to own one as I was having too much fun with the Japanese marques. Now own a F23 cabriolet and love it.
Used to drive past Munich Legends on a regular basis. They always have something special in there. Never knew what you were going to see
Around 1988 we had the BMW "Art" Cars exhibited at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
What a stunning car! Plus, Dan seems a great guy and a brilliant enthusiast. Thank you for this video, Jonny, this has been one of my favourites.
So nice to get insight of Munich Legends been a follower for years i had to pick my jaw up from off the floor a few times wen watching this🤤👌🏻
We definitely need a followup video showing the cars that weren't given enough attention.
Great video! I loved the tour of Munich Legends. I loved seeing those beautiful BMW. My favorite 3 series is the E46 too.
Absolutely fantastic video Jonny. Have loved BMWs for over 30 years! Some gems in there. Anything E30 gets my pulse racing. Loved that B6S!!
Love the old BMWs. The smells, the ride feel, commuted them for years. Such solidity. These exotics are absolutely drool worthy.
