When a man reels back, girns, breaths deep and ducks down you have like half an hour to defend yourself. Also a left hook is the worst punch you could do, maybe good for knocking some one off balance but it won't keep them down.

However, if you think about it, what he done was right if dennis beat up phil then phil would not have agreed to go on the job with den because he would want nothing to do with them and would be busy looking for revenge.
