- SHOPPING FIRST ANTIQUE SHOW! | VINTAGE FOR RESELLING NEAR CINCINNATI
Finding the first antique show to open since March is irresistible for me! I drive the 4 hours to Burlington, Kentucky to see this one-day wonder, looking for antique and vintage bargains to resell and discovering how shows might work in this new era of caution.
Mostly outside, this show proves a safe and fun venue to share the joy of antiquing again! Simulcasting on Periscope (link in description) provides a chance to connect live while there, and also bring some of the highlights to my RUclips viewers.
From big orange swung glass to antique buggy seats, this show fills fields and barns in a place I’ve never been, and the variety is terrific. Tempting true antiques include 1860s clocks and a signed Gustav Stickley desk, while Haeger mauve agate and Sonneman lamps appeal to the modernist in me.
A bathtub with no water? A mix-it-yourself soda fountain? People worked hard to do things we take for granted today, and we see cool things that they used that can serve new purposes with vintage style. Chimney toppers, horn furniture and a Barney Oldfield style coaster give evidence of changing styles and the fun people had (and are having today) with antiques and collectibles.
We also talk a little about how people are protecting themselves at shows in this new era, as well as why the prevailing wisdom to always negotiate may actually result in paying more.
Here are some more of the items we see along the way in this tour:
McCoy pottery, Auburn rubber truck, Niloak pottery, hooked rugs, Murano bowl, recipe cocktail shaker, Royal Copley wall pockets, 1950s chalk ware plaques, 1950s cigarette/card case, souvenir pens, backpack fire extinguisher, Star Trek photo, lithophane clock, regulator clock, kitchen clock, 7-up sign, Kool cigarette swag, Pelham’s Puppet, Cottolene ad, Bell System box, gas pump inserts, road sign table, Virco child’s chairs, ice cream chairs, Legionnaire banner, 1960s radio, road signs, industrial mold, auction sign, etc.

I appreciate the respectful way you handle merchandise. I often see other youtubers pick things up and plop them down with a couple of fingers- often clanking nearby pieces. I find myself wincing or holding my breath. I can relax and breathe normally during your videos. Thank you!
thank you for noticing! I've run several malls and five a lot of shows so I understand that reasonable caution is needed
@Cynthia Lenz, exactly... I appreciate respectful handling as well, which George does. I'm not gonna name names, but you were absolutely correct that some RUclips channel folks are, well, careless & isrespectful in handling items. I cringed as well.
I listen to you at work.....keeps my anxiety low 😀
I'm glad to help!
You are a great host. I love to learn a bit each time something catches your eye.
Thank you! I really enjoy all these cool old things and love to share what I know, and learn from others
Eagerly anticipated
With Love from SAM

Wow, thank you! I'm so happy to do it, I want people to appreciate what went into making all this
Great video George! Thanks! ❤
Wow my wife is going bonkers! Love the vase
Good choice!
Nice show, enjoyed it as always.
I'm glad you got to watch again! thanks for your enthusiasm and support
Love all your knowledge of the pieces on your video!!
Thanks so much! I try to pass on what I know in every video, I figure if we all know more we all have more fun with it
@@TheAntiqueNomad exactly!!! I am snowed and iced in at home so have bin watched your videos hahah we are going to Springfield in May to sell and buy buy buy!! Dreaming on a snowy day!!
You know George, the things that I like more from your videos is how much we can learn from you, I was watching you on my phone on this very video when my daughter ask me if I wanted to watch you on her big TV, of course I say yes, and all of the sudden, everybody's watching with me and saying what a great voice you had and also getting surprised at your knowledge, long story short, we bring watch your videos and they complemented me on my good taste, so thank you so much George, thanks to you I came out looking smart too. Hahahaha
that is so cool to hear! I really want people to expand their interest and appreciate what past generations did, I'm excited that you could do that as a family
Always teaching me things I did not know. You are a great teacher, thanks george
You are very welcome, I'm glad to be able to help you grow true appreciation for these neat old things
Howdy George!!! Just recently discovered your videos through Real Nifty Vintage videos, the Kentucky meet ups! Enjoy your vast knowledge of antiques & collectibles. Nice that you share your knowledge that surely helps the rest of us in our shopping experiences! Big Hugs!
Thank you, Ken! I'm appreciative that Jeffrey and I have connected, he's a great guy in person and I appreciate his enthusiasm. my goal is to share knowledge and connoisseurship so we all can appreciate these cool old things and share each other's passion
Hi George and camera man. Loved video. Thank you 😊
You are so welcome! we had fun there
I never knew about this show and it looks like a wonderful show with a variety of items. This will go onto my "Sales To Visit" list. Thanks George! 💖👍🏼
Please do! I plan to go shop there in April and hopefully show later in the season
Great information
Thank you! Glad you joined in and I hope to see you Mondays and Wednesdays 8 pm Eastern
Thanks for sharing with us George!
Thanks for watching! it was such a fun show that I went back and sold there last weekend
Thank you once again George!!
My pleasure! thank you for joining
I love the double nautilus vase!
it was so cool! they wanted $45 and that was fair but I'd just gotten a pink shell vase from a viewer so I didn't get it
I know this is an old video, but I can’t help but express my jealousy over the range of clocks at this show and the prices.....so cheap! Clocks of similar quality and vintage in Australia sell for MANY hundreds of dollars. I know, because I’m looking for a lovely old clock to add to my own decor, but anything in decent condition is just ridiculously expensive here. I wanted to reach through the screen and grab some of the beautiful clocks you were showing us. As always, THANK YOU!
I understand! We're very spoiled here because of the quantity of things made here in that era
George, were you ever in radio???...Broadcasting???...You have a great voice...Great info as always....I turned a client of mine on to you today...
I thought the VERY SAME thing!
thank you for that, I'm loving having more viewers to share!! I sang in a band for awhile but no formal broadcasting experience
OMG I love the T shirt design!!
cool! my friend's a good graphic artist, I hope to have it out soon
I would buy a shirt especially as I am becoming an antique and love to travel!
coming soon I hope! thank you
❤️ The T-shirt! I want 1! Glad you talked about the price of items and how everybody is trying to negotiate so sellers have to mark their prices up. I agree that everybody should just mark the item for amount
they want and that amount be firm!
Exactly!! it used to be that way but TV shows and Dr. Lori are teaching people bad negotiating tactics
Great video! I love watching-learn so much with each video!
Glad you like them! I want people to understand and appreciate Vintage things so I'm glad to do it
Love the art glass too!
I love that Stickley desk! Stickley is the king daddy of A&C. Typically made of white oak that's been quarter sawn. That's how you get the grain configuration from the "rays" of oak. In other words the growth rings have to be oriented 90° Square to the cut for those "Rays or flake" to show so prominent. And most people think it is stained brown with a typical color pigment stain. That is absolutely NOT true in most situations... the true authentic method to achieve the dark brown color was achieved through "tenting" the finished piece and bombarding it with ammonia. It created a chemical reaction with the tannic acid in the oak (which is why Oak was the Preferred Choice) creating that brown color. True arts and crafts furniture with real handmade pulls just screams AUTHENTIC. Although there were numerous other notable makers of A&C furniture, my favorite being the Greene Brothers, still yet Stickley stands the most notable. That's a REAL BARGAIN of a piece for $900. I would have personally bought that. Because I NEVER see Stickley furniture out and about
Rod, your knowledge and skills as a wood worker amaze me! I heard some of what you just said early in my career when I didn't know enough to absorb it. I thought that was a great price on a great piece and I hope my viewers read your comment and learn, I sure did
Orange hobnail vase ❤️ bird planter ❤️ green elephant ❤️ swirl glass ❤️ how much have I spent so far George 😂😂 Love the old chimney stacks, reminds me of 19th century London. That was fun George, thanks for taking us along with you 🤗🤗🤗
You and me both! I dropped a few hundred at the show. I appreciate your enthusiasm
George really like your time taken on clocks. We often see these various antiques where vendors may hold onto old market prices and so important to keep up to the current trends as you have said so you pay a fair current market price! These looked fairly priced! Thanks again for the tour!
thank you! I want people to know some things have become affordable for new collectors so they don't think everything is unavailable to them. I selfishly wish all the stuff I had still sold for more but I want a new generation to find love for real antiques too
Can’t wait to see what we will learn about!
Hi, Denise! Glad to have you join me again
Another great video thank you George
So nice of you, thanks for watching!
Sorry I missed the live but enjoyed the replay just the same! Great pieces!
I'm glad you got to see it and I realize that now that I'm doing Monday and Wednesday that it's double the fun but not always available to everyone
Hello George
Thanks for stopping by!
Great flea market....so fun!
Yes it was! I went back and sold there last weekend
That was fun to watch! I'm learning a lot about antiques and vintage stuff from your videos. Looking forward to the next episode. Thank you so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Please like, subscribe and tell your friends
@@TheAntiqueNomad Yes, I'm already a subscriber and I'll be telling my friends about your wonderful channel. :-)
This was fun thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
great video George. Shirts would be pretty neat if you had them made. Friends from Canada.
Working on it!
Great video loved every minute George
Glad to hear it! I sure have fun with it
Thank you for sharing
I really like the trees and barbecue smoke makes me hungry, like the elephant.
it's a pleasant place to see a show
Nice to see you in my neck of the woods.
Same here! I really enjoyed the show and hope to sell there in August
I really enjoy your videos. Your knowledge base is so varied and impressive. I love antique crocks and primitives but I love learning about the pottery companies and the history during their heyday. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.
So nice of you, I appreciate that! I really like crocks too and will look for interesting ones to show
Enjoyed the video & audio effects near the start (call to the races)
I had fun with that lol
Great show!
it was fun, I'm so happy to get to go to shows again!
My aunt used to make rag rugs in the U.K. using pieces of old clothing hooked into a back canvas They were popular in the 30s and of course each one unique
Yes, and such a good use of old remnants! People were industrious then
Found you during the pandemonium..love all the info you provide, and the prices at the stores you visit..watching from NC !
That's great! Thanks for watching, join the live chat if you can
You have always priced the things I've bought from you very well....and I've spent 200.00!!!!! And I have a latch hook rug my Mom did in the mid 70's...ducks and cattails....😁
thanks, I do this for a living but I want people to get to have and enjoy, that's the point!
thank you for going to this show and letting us see how vast it is. i was wondering about it myself. i hope you had lot's of luck and fun George !
I did! I hope to sell there in August so maybe we'll cross paths
I am so happy right now! My how I have missed the Burlington Flea Market!!!!!! It was my favorite when I lived in Cincinnati. 😍
It's so good! I'm glad to have found it
Those clocks are beautiful! They’re great for people who want to disconnect, or not have to use their reading glasses to see the time. 😝 I have gotten terrible gut cramps from cottonseed oil for ages. I looked into it and read it’s because cotton is grown with huge amounts of pesticide and the seeds just soak it up-then the pesticide is squeezed out with the oil. 🤷🏻♀️
So true! Cottonseed oil was known to be unhealthy back in Victorian times, it may be a seed but it’s from a plant humans were never meant to eat. I Lille clocks but i find letting them run out was my way to disconnect lol
@@TheAntiqueNomad haha! Great point. But then our responsibilities come a knocking, loudly.
I love your attitude on negotiations; tell me what you want or need for the item and I can then decide if it is worth what you are asking and will my pocket book accommodate.
agreed! if it's a fair price then that's what matters. I don't like the "Mark it up to mark it down" game
I feel the exact same way about prices George ✌💕
thank you for understanding! I try to offer things at a good price and pay a fair price when I see one
George, I can see your head caricature coming out of a 1955 Chevrolet Nomad Woody with treasures tied on top. Now that would be too cool! Maybe, the cover for a new book?
That would be cool! I thought of the '55 Nomad as well
Binged watch
thank you! I'm surprised looking back to see how many I've done
There is a thriving and large group still making rugs in the same way. Rug Hooking is labour and time intensive and the wool is expensive....$25 is a steal
so true! you can't recreate these things for what they cost used. it's good to know it's not a lost art
Wow! I was at this show too!
cool! I'm going to try to sell there in August
It would be nice if you can show us some bronze sculpture or statues on your show. Thank you very much
I will seek out more! There are a lot in one of my videos from early 2020 (January or February) from the West Palm Beach Antique Fest
Great video! I'm crazy about old chimneys, and those old chimney stacks really caught my attention😃 Lots of great items there. Thanks! Looking forward to the next!
Yes they are attention grabbers! wish I'd had room to buy a few
Hey George. 🤗🤗
hi there!
Happy Wednesday!! I enjoyed you video as always!! I am on a mission to watch all of your videos, I may not get through them all until snow hits the ground when I spend more time watching u-tube but you can believe I will be hinge watching them when I have Time!! Xoxo Lori K.😄 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷 🌸 🌷
Please do! I'm glad you're finding them worthwhile and look forward to exploring more with you
Have to admit I'm a bit jealous. We cant play yet, we're on restriction again lol we got a stricter lockdown in CA. However our flea market opens back up in Aug. Yay!
I sure hope it lightens up soon out west! I'm having to travel further but finding some safe places that are open again
I agree about negotiating not being ideal particularly if something has a slight flaw which people point out and want a discount as if you hadn’t seen it and priced accordingly The only time I agree with discount is if people are buying a few items
I'm happy to discount if people really like something that's a stretch for them, but the idea that negotiating is more fun than the love of the object or the connection to people seems misplaced
I see flamingos that Jeffrey would have liked at table where you talked about chalk ware.
oh yes, Jeffery and I share the flamingo fetish
Dang george... you passed up all the good stuff! 😉 all the stuff I want to look at, I probably have no business buying for myself. 🙄😁 looks like a great show though, huge amount of variety. And I agree with you completely, way too much effort and show to be limited with one day purchasing
I know, it killed me but my van was already full! great show and I went back and sold there last weekend, one day shows are too much work but people bought like crazy
Love the horn chair?
You're a smart guy. Please just wear the mask. No harm, no foul.
I have to now, I had the cameraman 6' in front of me to give distance but I realized afterwards that people cut in behind me
Always loved Leonard Nimoy...Mr Spock.
Yes he was so iconic! I'm sure I'm not the only person to call him Dr. Spock lol
7up was named that because originally it had Lithium in it while coca-cola had cocaine. The 7 was the atomic mass, Lithium was to give u an “up” as a mood stabilizer.
Lithium would really help us out as a society now. Too bad it has such devastating effects on the kidneys.
that is really interesting! I love sharing info about things we take for granted now and I'm glad to learn something new!
So what was the price for the 7up original advertising sign? Love the old original advertising signs.
Yeah I was wondering the same
$495
If there's Western saddles out and about in good shape could use a 15 and a half and a 16.
I saw one at Andrea's Antiques in St. Petersburg, FL, I even think it was in my video. What section of the country are you in currently?
Me and my mom love watching your videos and we had a question! Do you ever see any vintage Barbies such as from the 70s or 60s? Me and my mom are collectors of those barbies, it doesn’t really matter if they are in the box are not! Hopefully you see this! Love your videos a lot!
Sometimes I do, please email me at theantiquenomad@gmail.com with this request and I'll add you to my want list
Do you do videos of you buying? I am new to your site and have only seen videos where you are talking about items and pricing. I would really like to see you out buying for your shop!
Sometimes I do haul videos or show my spaces in malls and show booths, check out my playlist and you'll see some recent ones
We had a clock like the one they just sold was broken to pieces during our move.
Awww...I hate hearing those stories, I do a lot of insurance appraisal work for items damaged in moving
Looks like a great show! Was that a plastic tissue box you were carrying around? I had the same exact one if it was! Is there anything particularly noteworthy about it?? Thanks George.......Liz
Yes it was! They're just a fun look and it only cost me $1. I've sold them before, American made around 1979
I see a lot of people without masks ! It’s not right !
We social distanced and were the only ones there besides the owners. Kentucky has since mandated masks but this was shot some time ago
How far is Jeffrey's home to Kentucky? Did he fly there or drive and if he drive his long did it take?
he drove 3-1/2 hours
MW is medium wave.
Ah, yes, thank you! I don't know why I couldn't think past "Micro Wave"...lol
How much was that vase?
I'm sorry, which one?
Hi I am overseas and wish to sell to flea markets and the like exellent products: how does one get contact information to correspond with stall owners in THE US! THANKS
If you have antique and vintage items, I can connect you with people looking for Asian art and artifacts. I don't sell new items and am not connected with people who sell new things
@@TheAntiqueNomad actually I represent Balinese painters. I do not have to tell you that the Island of Bali is closed and the corona virus has created many problems. I put my WA+6282190312798 if I overstepped please delete. Thanks
@@TheAntiqueNomad Just to add, I only need one interested person to become the importer for the US, it will depend on whoever.
Are you from ky?
Seattle originally but I spend a lot of time in Kentucky
The shirt design looks good except your hair is a lighter color
I agree with you on pricing . It is also not good when there are no prices on things.
yes my hair went dark when the salons went dark lol. I'm afraid I'm bad about not pricing items because it's so time consuming but I try to always be fair and not change a price from one customer to the next, that's very unfair
Way too many commercials though!
While I'm grateful RUclips shares their ad revenue, I understand they can really load them up sometimes and I don't really get to control it. you can avoid them by watching the premieres as they're happening, or by getting RUclips premium which makes it so you see no ads
Dear George, I ask the price and smile, comment that's good if it is and then 9 times out of 10 they offer me a discount. I hate " beaters" and their cheap attitudes nickle and diming people .
Disappointed you did not wear a mask
I'm sorry, it's hard to show without the cameraman being visible but his presence kept people away from me so I was social distanced. I've been wearing one when filming on my own, and I just did last weekend's version of the show as a dealer and masked the whole time
People who dicker with people on every item are annoying especially if the item is under a buck.
