Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

I've taken the course and for me it was much more than "doing the work", learning new techniques or structured "practice". It's a course on how to turn your experiences in the landscape into an abstracted visual story that's unique and personal. It could even apply to figure or still life IMHO. I've taken some popular 12 week courses multiple years in a row and never really understood how to convey my own experiences outdoors in an abstract way until I took your course. The way you teach how to do that is simply brilliant. In the course you gave SO MUCH daily feedback in a positive and "meet me where Im at" kinda of way that was incredibly valuable. Taking the course helped me "see" what was important and then offer ways for me to "say" the thing I was trying to say. And there are so many great methods you share as well, how to develop a practice, what kind of kit to pack, mark making ideas, how to consider design. All that does come from the doing for sure, but its not like right, then off you go! and you're left to figure all of that stuff out on your own. And I learned a lot from all the other students work, and your feedback of their work too. Bar far the Q&As you do are my favorite part. Rich, engaging and helpful and you also teach about the process of abstracting "our" work. Those Lewis mic drops just seem to flow most Saturdays! this isn't a "learn to paint like the teacher" kind of course. It's about discovering how you can communicate your experience of a place visually, with simplicity and clarity.

Wow! Thanks Jenelle. I am always delighted when I hear people finding their own way of making paintings that are closer to what they want. Thanks again for your great messages of support & I hope that others find it useful to read too! X

I have to tell you, I started painting last night and wound up painting in your style - but the way I paint - now I'm halfway through three paintings and I'm loving it! Thank you!

Often, but I don’t do them with that intention. Just pick the good ones when they happen.

Thank you Lewis. Another great video. I'd love to see how you take your sketch book ideas and turn them into a larger finished piece.
