  • A pioneer of the Symbolist and Expressionist movements, Bohemian illustrator and printmaker Alfred Kubin often evoked dark, morbid and imaginative elements to create his riveting black-and-white drawings.
Born in Leitmeritz, Bohemia on April 10, 1877, Alfred Leopold Isidor Kubin endured a traumatic childhood: at the age of ten, he witnessed his mother's agonizing death from tuberculosis; soon after, his father had married his mother's sister, who herself died within the year; before he turned twelve, he was subjected to sexual abuse by an older, pregnant woman. At fifteen, Kubin was apprenticed to the landscape photographer Alois Beer, although the experience was not salutary, and at its conclusion he attempted suicide on his mother's grave. After a brief stint in the Austrian army and another mental breakdown, Kubin began studying art, first at a private studio and then at the Munich Academy. It was in Munich that the young artist first encountered the work of Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch and Max Klinger, which profoundly inspired his own practice. In 1911, he joined the Blaue Reiter group, whose founding members included Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and participated in their 1913 exhibition at Galerie Der Sturm. Thereafter, he worked at a remove from any formal group or movement, living in a small castle on a medieval estate in Upper Austria. Upon the annexation of Austria in 1938, the Nazi's declared Kubin's work “degenerate,” but his reclusive nature allowed him to continue working through the war. In his later years, he was accoladed with the Grand Austrian State Prize for Visual Art and the Austrian Medal for Science and Art. He died in his castle on August 20, 1959.
Kubin's work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and the National Gallery in Prague.

I’ve been subscribed to your channel for ten years, and I feel like I should apologize for never commenting sooner! I wish to let you know that your impact on my life has been tremendous. I cannot tell you how many essays I’ve written on the artists I’ve discovered through you (Remedios Varo has become a part of my heart most of all). And I cannot tell you how many paintings I’ve made through the transcendent composers you’ve introduced me to (Robert Rich always opens doors to other worlds for me). When I need to go inside myself and breathe again, your channel has always been there. Thank you for all you do. It is truly a great service.

Incognite , enigmi insondabili ed eterni espressi in uno stile del tutto personale e facilmente riconducibile all 'artista . Preferisco i lavori di Kubin : cupi , introspettivi rispetto , ad esempio , a quei tipici paesaggi campestri inglesi , noiosamente rassicuranti dell epoca vittoriana.

Fuck... That was huge. Shocking. Mainly extremelly powerfull... through weakness and that complex simplicity. The harder about art is to put not less but neither more at the final work at every art. I haven't got bond with this art. I am mainly related with music. But i feel identification with this human. There is a distinct line between of the so-called and the genuine. Before any explanation. Before consider even describe what you see. Instictly. I feel this line is defined by suffer. By common pain.

"Alfred Kubin is considered a major representative of Symbolism and Expressionism. His work is characterized by its dark, dreamlike imagery, often featuring spectral figures and distorted landscapes. He was a prolific artist, producing thousands of drawings, watercolors, and prints. His most famous works include The Sleepwalker (1905), The Anniversary (1909), and The Golem (1920).
Kubin's work was influenced by a number of factors, including his own personal experiences, the writings of Sigmund Freud, and the art of Max Klinger and Odilon Redon. He was also interested in theosophy and spiritualism.
Kubin's work was highly influential on the development of Surrealism. He was admired by artists such as Salvador Dalí and Max Ernst, and his work has been exhibited in major Surrealist exhibitions.
Today, Kubin is considered one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century. His work is held in the collections of major museums around the world."

He is not a pioneer of the Symbolism. Years BEFORE he born, Moreau was already a famous simbolista painter, and the Pont-Aven schools was over when he was 11

As most of them are black, it seems some have color in their drawings. Is there any reason why those few in specific contain color opposed to most of his other art pieces? (or do they all actually contain color and the picture of the drawing was taken with a black/white camera)

    Son sueños macabros retratados
    Son imagenes inquietantes
    Las pinturas del gran Kubin
han dejado a su ser maravillado
Como cuando descubrió en todo su esplendor el firmamento
    tan solo siendo un infante
