    My wife bought me this for my bday. Great little machine and fun to tinker with. The portafilters seem a bit small. Can't really pack in 15g of coffee even on the double shot filter. I'm thinking of trying out a non pressurized 51mm portafilter. Some reviewers say they get even better results trying that set up. If you got 15g of coffee into the double portafilter in stock form, I think you'd have to tamp it down too much?

    Great video, thanks. Even though I make sure the ready light is on before I start, my expresso is often just warm, not hot. Am I supposed to wait for the light to blink or something? Also I am using a larger vessel to capture my double shot but how do I know when to stop the shot? Does it shut off on its own or do I judge when I think 2 shots worth of expresso have come out? Thanks, Pam

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  4 года назад

      Pam Baston you must wait 10-15 minutes after turning it on to ensure the portafilter warms up and gets hot too. Otherwise hot water entering a cold portafilter will give you a less than hot espresso. To speed up the process you can always run the portafilter under hot water for 30 seconds or so to warm it up more quickly. It does not shut off automatically. Usually it will take roughly 20 to 30 seconds to pull a double shot. I would suggest getting two, thick-walled shot glasses and letting the stream of espresso run into them that way you won’t be over extracting the coffee.

      Pre-heat porta filter by running hot water through it without coffee
      2. Capture hot water that passed through porta filter in shot glass you will use for espresso
      3. Empty shot glass after 10 secs (warmed up)
      4. Pull your shot through a pre-warmed porta filter into a warmed up shot glass

    How long does it take from the moment you turn it on to the moment it has poured the espresso?
    And how much hot water could it pour before it runs out of hot water?

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  4 года назад

      For best results you will want to turn the machine on and wait 10-15 minutes to ensure that the portafilter gets hot. Although the boiler will reach pressure and bring the water to temperature, unless the portafilter is also hot, you won't get a hot espresso because the portafilter will cool it down if it's not hot. So to answer your question, the boiler will reach temperature in about 2 minutes but it takes more time for the portafilter to get hot. You can speed that up by running it under hot water but that's a hassle for me. I just turn the machine on and let it sit for a while before I attempt to make an espresso. The reservoir holds about 34 ounces of water.

    i bought this machine recently and so far I like it. I'm new at making espresso. How long should you keep the machine running to make a shot? I'm used to my Keurig where it makes 6, 8, and 10oz cups off coffee. This machine, you have to turn the pump off manually to stop making a shot. Should I time it? Should I measure the shot(s) in ounces? Thanks.

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  3 года назад +1

      There are several factors at play. Your grind, your dose, your tamp, time. Generally a single shot will take about 9 grams of coffee, fine grind, evenly tamped and 20-30 seconds to pull the shot which is 1 ounce. If the pull takes much less than that you need to alter your grind and or tamp. Too fine a grind or too tamped will result in the pull taking too long resulting in a bitter shot. Too coarse a grind and the shot will pull too quickly resulting in a weak shot. It takes some time to learn the right balance of all these elements.

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  5 лет назад

      Trish Garland There could be several reasons that I can think of. Most obvious is that It is simply defective. Make sure the water reservoir is seated properly inside the machine. Make sure the machine has reached temperature and the ready light is on before you begin. Make sure the Porta filter that’s firmly attached to the machine. Try without any coffee in the Porta filter at all and see what comes out. Does the steam wand develop at least 20 to 30 seconds of full steam? The drips that do come out, are they hot? Could be the boiler is not developing enough heat and pressure.

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  5 лет назад +1

      It's not just a water reservoir.This has a boiler that heats the water and provides the pressure. The same boiler that has a higher heat setting available by adjusting the control knob, that provides the steam for the steam wand.

    • @edwardzou1154
      @edwardzou1154 5 лет назад

      There's a high pressure pump inside and it uses a pressurized filter basket, and it's not really crema, just bubbles because the coffee is all mixed up and pushed through a small hole, hence the pressurized filter basket

      No it does not turn off by itself. You must turn the dial to off after you've pulled the shot.

  • @haelyferkingstad
    @haelyferkingstad 3 года назад

    You don’t ever let a shot stand. You have to pull it right away. That is what you call a burnt shot and your coffee will taste like crap. It has to be poured into milk right away. So froth the milk first.

    • @michaelerbreviews
      @michaelerbreviews  3 года назад

      If you are using a high-end espresso machine I'd agree with you. However with this one there is only a single heating element so if you steam the milk first, you then have to wait for the boiler to cool down before you can pull the shot. So cold milk. I don't think that'll work out too well.

      They fit into the portafilter. The smaller one is for a single shot of espresso. The larger is for a double shot. There's a spring around the top of the portafilter that holds them in place. Pop in the one you want to use. Store the others.

Or you can run some hot water through the portafilter to heat it up more quickly before putting your coffee in the filter.

Moka is more like a strong drip coffee the difference being that the coffee is brewed by hot water, under low pressure, which bubbles up through the coffee grounds and up into the pot. So, no, you can't make Moka using an espresso machine.

    Terrible machine. Taste bad. Weak. Messy. Clogs. Impossible to clean.
