Organization is one thing, but knowing your editing program by heart is equally important.
Or just, you know, having a good artist sense. Knowing all the technical stuff doesn't mean anyone will watch your video or enjoy it.
@@TheShockwave44 True, of course
No not "OR"...
It's kind of hard to be a virtuoso if you don't know your instrument...
Get the tech shit down pat, only then can you focus on the artistry.
Hey Zac. Instead of using adjustment layers 4:55 you can also use markers by pressing M. Type in the name of your marker and thereby duration click and drag the blue numbers to the right.
Click on the timeline for markers on the timeline or clips.
Hope this helps
Also can open up a markers tab and have a catalog of everything you labeled. ^100% agree and use this process
Callaghn Robertson thanks!
Yea dude!! This was my bread and butter for so long! JUST LOVE THIS
Best thing for me was creating 2 timelines, one on top of the other, then dragging and piecing together the edit in the top timeline. The clips also stay in the bottom after you drag them up so you always have your selected clips without losing anything. Its great! Also when going through your footage, don't forget to use I and O to select in/out points then comma to drop them in your timeline.
I need a video explaining this.
@@empireprotege Search "pancake editing".
ohh interesting
Hey @@empireprotege If you're interested I created a video on my channel on how to go through footage fast in Premiere to get your timelines ready for 'pancake editing' :)
totally true, i agree with the same day edits have more life and more magic than when projects turns in weeks. Also i would say that if you shoot the whole footage or the mayority of them you have an idea of how the video is turning around at the same time you are shooting. I heard that is called shooting as an editor but correct me if i am wrong, for the other side if you are using this idea in your head you are going so much faster to the point. Also, the idea of shooting with the music in mind is sooooooo goood, if your client has an idea what they want, i hate when you finish first or second draft and they asked if you can change the music when you asked in advance for reference. Thanks for this video!
About to try to try to teach myself how to cherry pick my own timeline, but just the brief intro to how you do it was mind boggling! If you were to do a video on how you organize your timeline while editing, I personally would love that!! I very much enjoyed this video, one of the most digestible, educational videos I have seen in a while. Keep up the good work!!!
Great video Zach! Sometimes I feel I spend waaay too much time going through organising & labelling my footage but it's reassuring to hear that it's a crucial step in your workflow even for the super fast same day edits!
A lot of people are promoting the "timeline organisation". But aren't there much better options in the "Library"? You have colors, keywords, ratings, smartbins,... and a lot more stuff, which was designed for this purpose. Is it coming from "selftaughtness" or are there some real advantages to it? Because as far as I know "professional" editors (movies, tv etc.) don't "misuse" the timeline. Some thoughts on that would be great.
I use markers and color code like crazy. Sooo helpful. I prefer marking over what he is doing.
I think the timeline and library must work together. BUT, only if this footage will need to be accessed later for other projects. If this is truly a "one off" and you are going to slam thru the editing to get it done, a bit of misuse of the timeline should be expected, and can even speed you along in some cases. Now, if you will need to go back and pull content from the project out for other purposes, it will be very hard without some good library organization. Simply put, you forget a lot. For me, organizing the content in the library is a crucial first step before I put anything down on the timeline.
Wyatt Fenner I uctually usually started doing his method first then copy and paste another timeline and just delete the footage in the bottom and just rename it so I can have it separated in the timeline. Also every couple of hours I duplicate my timeline that I’m editing so that if I ever have to go back for a client I can just use the other saved timeline.
I'll toss in my two cents.
I do the timeline misuse like you call it. The benefit to me is that I can duplicate the timeline. I learned this from Brandon Li over at his film school. Essentially the first timeline is the raw stringout (labelled stringout), where all your footage is strung out. You go through and organize it and pick your best bits.
Then I just create smaller timelines for each scene, by duplicating the stringout and deleting anything unnecessary.
Then finally there is a master timeline where all the polished bits end up. Then I will duplicate the master a few times if I'm experimenting with different music, editing pace etc.
This is fire, so much fire. You are crazy talented dude, keep on inspiring :)
I can't believe you do all this editing just using your trackpad. I would die without my mouse.
I would die without my trackpad
The more you do it the more it feels normal tbh
I hate using a mouse on a laptop, Trackpad feels so much natural!!
Visit my channel
Trackpad for the win. The mouse feels like a lifeless hockey puck to me.
thankyou for taking the time to show us all tips GREAT VIDEO
you can use markers instead of adjustment layers to do the same thing in labeling clips inside a timeline
So much wisdom in this video
One hidden takeaway for me is when you do the timelapse of yourself editing it. It's like accountability, can't stop editing or else the timelapse is ruined.
90% of wedding/events filmmakers here in the Philippines do same day editing included in their photo & video package rates! 💯
seriously!? thats crazy!
@@AaronRondale yep its kinda common in the Philippines.
not to mention, wedding videography package rates here are similar with and sometimes cost way lower than those in America and Europe. yet Ph i think so far is the only country that offers SDE (same-day edit) wedding videos. look up Jason Magbanua, Mayad Studios, etc. every video is a SDE video.
@YNSFLD Jason Magbanua, for lack of better word, 'invented' the same-day edit wedding video. He was the very first to do it and actually pull it off. Hes a great teacher too. I guess everyone else learned from the man.
most common wedding video team in the Philippines: 3 videographers, 1 video editor. usually editing starts after the couple are made-up and begins exporting the SDE around 10mins before the program ends (dinner time). well wedding ceremonies in the Ph are quite different compared to the US
Super helpful Zach! Thanks a million
This video is great because it allows us to get a small glimpse inside the mind of someone in the creative process. I would really like to see your workflow of how you choose your selects. For me, that part takes a lot of time and would love to see how others do this; and pick up a few tips
Loved this info, thank you so much!
Glad to see you here Javier
@@samiadam7261 Hello to you Sami! virtual high five. ✋
✋Hi5
Dude, within the first minute, actually seconds, i really like your style of film. Really well done. Now we just have to somehow monetize in a sea of talent out there.
You are a machine man! Love your insight
Absolutely right zach!
When we shoot it and then edit it... We have created an edit pattern in our mind while shooting.
REALLY INTRESTED IN THE ORGANIZATION VIDEO TUTORIAL! This was amazing!
Excellent video Zach! The cherry pick timeline part really helped me. So please share some more tips on organization and on same day edits :)
Straight beast mode with those same day edits man! Great stuff!
I’m liking all these videos! I just started following you. I’m an FPV pilot and I have recently started posting videos. I’m liking the editing game and I’m looking to take my editing to the next level! Keep up the good content. You’re expanding the way I view editing and the things I can do with it!
Love the video man, your shots are amazing. I gotta snap out of perfectionist mode and do more same day edits haha
Yes zak we intrested to talk about the organization. Much love to you brother ☝️
I'm ready for the challenge! Now just need to find the project haha ! Thanks for sharing Zach
Love watching your stuff and it has actually helped me on my Comic Con and anime con videos over the last few months
Zach dude yes!!! I've done same-day edits and 100% you're right every single thing that you said you are right man like I could not have said it better!! Thanks for the video always fantastic!!
Thanks so much for sharing this. Really really valuable stuff. Much respect to you.
Would be ace to see other BTS same day edits for Media Composer, Final Cut, and Resolve.
Someone should hold some kind of SDE Olympics
Congrats man!! You are amazing, and you editing skills are the best, thanks for teach us and show us your workflow and how we have to do the edition! Greetings from Mexico!
thanks for the tips Zach
Very useful! Thank you man!
Great stuff, thanks for the content. Would you be able to do a video pricing guide on what to charge for various editing options?
yes I need organizational and workflow tips.
Hi, Zack. I would definitely like to see your in-depth organization process. If you are willing to make a video in which you "dig-in" to that process, I would be greatly appreciative. Btw, thanks for sharing this one!
makes a lot of sense about the first 30 seconds. so true!
Woah this video was gold man. Thanks for all the tips!
This is gold!
Please more editing videos, I loved the commerical one where U really dove into your creative process and story telling
Very informative and well executed. Thanks Zach
Thank you for making this video you don't even understand the time you help me save in future
I actually have to do this today. So, thanks for this. Major helpful.
needed this 🔥🔥🔥
Your tipps are insane!!! Thank you very much
I'd love more content around this topic! Thanks soooo much!
Yes zak we intrested to talk about the organization. Much love to you brother
great vlog....ton of good stuff in little bit of time....that is how we have to make YT now-a-days though....Really like the idea of labeling the adjustment layer...
Please, bring the video about folder, footage, timeline organization...#LIFE
Yes, please!
Look at mahalo my dude he has an amazing video about editing tips and organizational skills in premier
All you said is true buuut... As I understood you were there not for the first time so the process is ofc easier. You know what u trying to accomplish beforehand so it makes everything easier and faster through the edit by itself. It's much complicated when you are making something new, without any idea how the end product will look. Besides that - great tips ;)
you can do the same with markers, and expand it, give it a title. (instead of using adjustment layers and cluttering your work space)
That's how I spend up my workflow. Create different sequences for each camera used. And 2 for each. 1 with all the clips, with the selective edits on a different track. Then another sequence with all the selected edits. Along with creating differnt bins for everyhting from cameras used, timelines, and audio.
Awesome video. Thanks. 🤗
Specific tips on the organizational process would be a nice video.
Great video man, you are getting better and better!
You're next level man! Learnt a ton from you
Great vid Zach 👍🏻😊 best regards from a small 😉german filmmaker
Thank you so much for sharing! this is going to be extremely helpful!
PLEASE dig into the organization process more. it's always overlooked.
Super happy you made this man same day edits are not easy at all especially if your doing both all the shooting then running back and all the editing everything ...more videos on this subject plzz lol #urdope
so talented man! Thanks for the tips
Wow, this is really helpful!
This is awesome I want to try something like this
Thanks for sharing
Love this video man! Really helping out. I'm only half way through and i've been looking for something like this to help my craft/brand and Channel. 🙏🏾
Awesome Video Zach!
Ok this is what I need.
Awesome information, thanks!
Great video
Please! subscribe my RUclips channel
That cup next to your camera and laptop gave me so much anxiety 😂
Appreciate the BTS insight! I can spend days just with color correcting/grading. How do you speed that up? What picture profile do you shoot in and how do you color correct?
New subscriber here 😎 I film and edit all on my iPhone 7plus 256gigs I use lumafusion app
Nice info and work, thank you!
Great video and editing skills.
Just some questions sir.
1. Instead of using adjustment layers why not use labels?
2. I think the Lumetri Color and etc should not be in the choosing clips workflow to have a bigger workflow area for selecting the clips or is the workflow area comfortable for you?
Nice video! I've done all kinds of same-day edits since 2004, but never thought about it being a special skill. Maybe I should communicate it more..
But it seems it's getting harder every year. At first, it was that productions are becoming more filmic and needed more attention (effects/color correction/stabilisation etc) than in the past when just having a video edited within a few hours was already magical. (although carrying around my mac pro and some screens was not something to be happy about) But nowadays it's just that my 2013 mac book pro can't cope with the material shot. SOmetimes things are soooo slow in premiere or fcp.
Last job I did same day (or two day) edits had a mix of 4k 25p, 1080p 100fps, 5,7k 360 video and 4k DJI drone footage. I shot most of the content myself during the day and did the edit in the evening. Before I could edit I had to do a proxy or transcode, otherwise it would be a slideshow of stills during editing. But transcoding and creation of proxy files take too long when being portable.
Any tips on this? What spec mbp and footage are you using. Do you use a lot of post stabilisation and color correction?
Would love for you to go more in depth with this. Been kinda heading this route for myself
Where is the link to the Premium Beat tutorial on organization that you mentioned? I don't see it in the description. Love your content Zach!
Great video, good information, Thanks!
thanks for sharing.. very usefull
Just starting to get into video, would love more in depth on organization stuff. Also - would love if you maybe ran over the specs of your main editing desktop (if that's what you use)
I would recommend a Laptop. I'm using a desktop right now and being stuck in a room also stops me from doing the creative process. I'm a beginner by the way but that's just me.
From the time you have learned Premiere Pro, the job is done!
Really great insight.
I love your style in this video. Do you tend to direct some of the competitors to look at the camera or do something specific, or just let them do their thing and film it? I shoot a lot of race videos and tend towards the latter, rather than interrupt people. But I'd be interested to hear what you think of stepping in a little more and asking people to play to the camera a bit.
woah
great video.. but how does your MacBook handle all that editing..?
It’s just slo mo. No overlays or gfx. Not too intensive for the MacBook
Lach Pek .. thanks .. that helped me out very much 👍
I wonder if it can handle the 4K 60fps 10bit Vlog file.
Yeah, those first 30 seconds is hardest!
Interesting that - music - would be the unifying element... aside from the importance of audio for video... music is the non-verbal, non-linear way we communicate emotions (rather than ideas) and can tell a story w/o really saying anything... at least specifically.
(Personally, i’v completed four plays, but couldn’t start until the right piece of music put - it - together for me... then I couldn’t stop until they were completed. Pity I can’t actually use the music since I don’t have Rights...
awesome… Organization video please… feel free to go into intricate detail, I don't mind long videos
Hope you will get more subscribers !!
#Handled -same day stuff is the worst, not Bc it’s hard but Bc it’s tediously tiring. Lol
Good tips fam
So sweet
Not to start a flame war or anything but you should REALLY at least look at how FCPX handles organization. Hands down beats these methods and could shave tons of time off what you’re doing. Regardless, you are a beast for cranking this type of edit out so quickly!
Zach can do this cuts 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I thought I heard my heart beat 😂
Hey Zach, great video! How do you get the adjustment layer "DAY 1" names to show up on the layers on the timeline?
Click on the little spanner icon on your timeline & make sure 'Show Video Names' is enabled :)
I know exactly how I do it, charge a double rate.
Are you editing off of an ssd ? Are you also using proxies ? Seems like your workflow is smooth
hi zach, just wondering whats ur laptop?i cant edit that fast bcos my laptop is really slow in rendering, maybe theres are tips for app settings, fyi im using premiere pro cc, thanksss
you MUST know your editing program like the back of your hand.

first of all you need a beefy pc
