    I learned R when I was 48 years old. At that time I hated typing command lines and could not understand why R was not made like SPSS. However, now I am enjoying analyzing data for myself using R.

My background is in commodity trading, but I'm currently studying Google Analytics to try and secure a job in data analysis in London. Sorry if I'm rambling a bit, but your comment gave me some hope, as I was worried that I may be too old to learn R, which is often required in data analysis roles. Thank you for your encouragement!"

    Some advice for learning to code from a final year CS student- try and break down the problem into lots of baby steps .
    Sometimes people get stuck and aren't sure how to solve a problem cause it just seems big. The thing that always helps me is getting a pen and paper out and just explaining myself through the steps that need to happen.
    Also, don't feel bad if your code doesn't run the first time you compile it. It happens to us all.

    I work at one of the large banks in Australia which creates the wholesale models as a Quantitative Analyst, and a lot more in R. Anyone can learn R but it is difficult to say when you can consider yourself an expert, I use it there and in my research. I have been using it since 2014 and thought I was pretty good at it until we had to start using R6 or RCPP and be less reliant on packages and use as much as possible base R for regulatory use and transparency. I have a heavy education in Mathematics & Statistics, bachelors and masters and now a research degree, so I use both R and Python if I need to.

    if you want to change the axis limits you can use xlim=c(start, end) or ylim=c(start, end) just inside of the plot function. If you want to make it a bit more automated you could use some things like ylim=c(min(y)-const, max(y)+const)

It might not be as pretty though. But I only know Python and Pandas and so far it was enough for my occasional needs in research.

    One of my 2020's resolutions was to learn how to code. So, I enrolled in online Python courses, then a professor suggested me to learn R and I enrolled in that course too. I was having a really hard time mentally, so I kinda abandoned the courses and then took a subject about Computational Physics in Uni, in which I learned Julia.
    Sooo, now I have just basic knowledge of those three languages, not having enough level in any of them to "defend" myself 😂😂
    I wish you the best at learning R, Paige! I think programming is very funny and interesting once you start familiarizing with it.

    • @BlastinRope
      @BlastinRope 3 года назад

      Just stick with python dude, the syntax of python makes it easy to focus on the concepts of coding without some silly syntax requirements of some other languages like c++.
      Within python you should focus on learning all the standard data structures and how to implement them in python. These data structures are lists, binary trees and basic algorithms that make these structures powerful. Once you learn enough to implement data structures in python then you can worry about other languages and now you can focus more on learning other languages syntax quirks while being comfortable with coding concepts.

    • @MrLoggfreak
      @MrLoggfreak 3 года назад

      @@BlastinRope I agree, python is also a very flexible language, so if you want to program stuff other than statistical analysis you can switch really easily (machine learning, web-development, automation etc...).

    Great video!
    Wondering if you've made any reserving models in R for general insurance (IBNR, UPR, etc.)

    Hi Paige.
    You can increase the height of your y-axis by adding the argument ylim=c(a,b) inside the plot() command, where ‘a’ is the minimum and ‘b’ is the maximum of your desired y-axis.
    Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me if you would like any help.
    Thanks Paige.

    Hey, I just found your channel and just for curiosity I wanted to ask you, how did you study sciences and ended as a risk analyst? Don't you need more like an economic studies background for that? I have a degree in biology and i'm currently studying computer sciences btw. Do you have a video where you talk more about your career and your background? Thank you.

    Just a suggestion Paige-I feel the title card in the beginning makes your vlog very similar to other vlogs. The very raw form of editing with just the time mentioned in bottom right seemed much more unique and real. (university vlog formats).

    I'm Junior .Net dev (before that I was Junior Java dev) and I think I have experience with many programming languages. What I can say is that coding in R was for me one of the worst experience 😂 Still don't know how i passed all exams in R and got my MSc degree. I think that python makes more sense, is more friendly, has some cool libraries and is kinda familiar to other programming languages. R has like completely new rules for everything I knew. Hope you'll pass all exams and R will help on your work in actuaries ❤️ And I can't from your sister reaction to plant 😂😂😂
