I always thought REM should record this song acoustically in a proper studio. I love this version, more than the album version. Always have. The choral arrangement on this version is so beautiful, and undermined by the dissonance of the album version. I love dissonance, I love punk and Sonic Youth and all sorts of stuff, but this song wasn't meant to be abrasive. It was meant to be overly beautiful like this.
i think the tune and melody to this version make it more uplifting somehow. But yes, devastating when thinking about the lyrics and reason it was written, which can also be for other people in the world who have gone too soon (for the listeners) and not just for Curt.
