Just read Ruth; which is only 4 chapters long, and it's a beautiful story.
Learned that Ruth was Naomi's ("Mara"/Bitter)
      Mother-in-law.
She had a legacy of honorable behavior.
      She worked with Boaz's handmaidens.
Boaz, due to Ruth's honorable reputation, allowed her to work with his handmaidens and for his own servants to not shun/reproach/shame her for gleaning the heads of wheat.
A bunch of other things. She honored her mother-in-law and honored that she should wait as Boaz was looking out for her.

My favorite part of this story is knowing that Boaz was the son of Rahab. Which explains why he was able to see Ruth as a faithful, beautiful woman even though she was a gentile, because his mom was too.
It shows how God uses the weak and insignificant to shame the wise and does amazing things through people and situations we may never know about.

I've always been inspired by Ruth's boldness. This was the sermon I asked to be preached at my wedding - which might seem odd to many. Boaz's covenant with Ruth is a picture of God's covenant with us through Jesus. Jesus is our kinsman redeemer. All Christian marriages are a picture of that same covenant that God has with us.

How about mentioning the awesome typology of the book of Ruth?
Ruth is the gentile bride (representative of the Church), Naomi represents Israel, and Boaz as the kinsman redeemer represents the Messiah, full of grace...
The role of the kinsman redeemer (Messiah) was, by grace and union, to restore the dead to (eternal) inheritance -- herein, namely Elimelech (Naomi's husband), and Mahlon (Ruth's dead husband, whose name, by no coincidence, means 'sickly', such as we are in the flesh before redemption). This restoration of inheritance is because the firstborn of Ruth and Boaz was to inherit and restore the name of Mahlon within Israel (that is what the Levirate law is about)... Boaz takes on the legal curse of marrying a gentile bride (Deut 23:3), as the Messiah took on our curse of sin... but this generational curse on Boaz was wiped clean for the future, as his offspring (Obed) would be the levirate heir of Ruth's first husband, not Boaz, thus he would not carry the curse to the 3 generations to David.
Also, the nearer kinsman who wouldn't marry Ruth represents the law that could not/ would not provide for anyone's redemption and (eternal) inheritance...
As in the book of Ruth, Israel is related to the Messiah, but it is the gentile bride who meets Him first and introduces Him to Israel who is yet to be redeemed -- when they call upon His name (Lev 26:40-42; 2 Chr 7:13-14; Jer 29:12-14; Jer 50:4-5,20; Hosea 5:15-6:3; Matt 23:37-39; and also referencing the purpose and outcome of the time of Jacob's trouble).
And there is probably more besides!
Halleluyah. God is awesome, and so poetic!

Bob, that would be awesome... but I tend to live far away from everyone!! I'm not theologically trained, I'm just keen and love God and revere Him and His Word and His faithfulness... If only I was familiar with Biblical Hebrew and Greek, that would be cool.
There are many teachers whose work is available in online videos who know lots about such things... These are the ones who know that nothing in the OT is arbitrary or 'just' a nice story. They know that every page of the Old Testament is a testament pointing forward to the yet future Messiah! I have just been learning from them!
I encourage you greatly in your learning... it is sooo rewarding!

JH I don't know if you're dismissing me or just humbly stepping aside. Anyway, I'm not going to turn into the HULK just yet. But biblically speaking, it's okay for children of God to share their learning with each other, like through email and things like that. There's some nuggets of information I could share as well from my journey with Christ.
      But you don't have to.

That's interesting but that's quite the reach, I'm sure you could apply that logic to just about anything if you're going to use such unspecific symbolism. You also gotta' realize that this story was written post Babylonian exile, were talking most likely 800 years after its subject material. It's amazing how Christian's can take this stuff at face value.. if someone wrote a story about my life 800 years from now with little to no documentation of my life would you believe it?
Then again, Christian's seem to throw logic out the window when it comes to the bible, we're talking people who think Adam and Even were literal people, 2 of every animal of a million different species got on a boat that flooded the earth, God suspended the sun in the sky for two days (stopped earth's rotations), earth is not centery of universe (heliocentric theory), the water and vegetation created before the earth had atmosphere, etc. -- anyways, the bible just defies logic, common sense, historicall/scientifically inaccurate, and anyone with reason and common sense in this modern age that reads the gist of it and doesn't see the constant holes in its logic is either indoctrinated and brainwashed or simply doesn't care enough to question their faith.

Okay just a quick note... this is even greater than you might think. Not only what Naomi a widow and poor she was also an orphan and a foreigner. This meant that she was allowed a portion from all four corners of the field. According the the law she fit the requirements for all four portions.

It's a bit odd to hear of their cultural traditions thousands of years ago, but through this story, we can really see the kindness, sweetness, loyalty, and love all of these three characters show one another through the exercise of their culture
It feels rather stiff and confusing to just read them alone, but to have a visual for Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi--to see their joys and sorrows in such relatable human manner...It just makes the story all the more powerful and wonderful
Thanks for making these stories come to life!

  • @markomus1
    @markomus1 7 лет назад +55

    Very good book summary!
    A few of my thoughts...
    1) I love how you subtly imply that Ruth proposed to Boaz, which is contrary to Churchianity and the whole testosterone-driven idea that men are supposed to initiate and women are to respond. She did, indeed, propose to him! :D Funny enough, the hardcore "men are leaders" folk (be they men or women) will "throw shade" at Ruth for doing this and spout off about how God uses even sinful situations to bring about His good).
    2) Boaz already knew about the other kinsman redeemer, for he makes mention of him right when Ruth proposes to him. This implies to me that marrying Ruth had been on his mind for some time already, but perhaps he wasn't sure of himself...or of Ruth. Can't blame him, though, since...
    3) ...Boaz was an older bachelor. As one myself, I can identify with his hesitation to make too many moves past certain plausibly deniable gestures. Remember he calls her "daughter," not sister. And he says that her latter kindness was greater than her first because she didn't go after younger men, whether rich or poor! She, a younger widow (probably about mid twenties?) braved an older man. That's a courageous woman! :)
    4) Notice how noble he is: In our "free love" culture, anyone can pursue anyone and there's no law about it. Is she married? There's no law against adultery--as long as it's consensual (though there are still laws on the books that punish unfaithful spouses). Did she break up with the boyfriend, but he's still not convinced? Too bad; he needs to get over it and move on, right? And the new boyfriend is perfectly within his right, isn't he? Well... (My grandfather, by contrast, asked my grandmother's ex-boyfriend if they were still seeing each other and/or if it was OK for him to ask out Mary. He was fine with it and the rest is history. Because that was the honorable and considerate thing to do. My grandfather wanted to make sure he wouldn't be interfering with or hurting the ex-boyfriend). But with regards to Boaz, he didn't "overreach and transgress" his brother (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8 in Greek; has to do with acquiring a wife in a way that's holy and honorable as opposed to the "all's fair in love and war" approach of the world). Instead, Boaz waited his turn.
    5) I can almost imagine that in such a small town the other guy wasn't ignorant of the situation and this was more a theatrical formality than anything else.
    6) Do a word study on the Hebrew word for "redeemer." I think you'll be delighted :)

It’s just so crazy how in modern time as a believer. Ruth would been seen as desperate and Boaz would of been seen as not the one because he was open to passing Ruth to the closer relative and him not being the initiator of marriage…. This is why you should just let God write your love story inside of going off of society standard

You misunderstood their use of " it just so happens". They never said it just so happened that they were allowed to glean the grain. It just so happened that it WAS the beginning of grain season, and it just so happened that she ended up in Boaz field. They never said it just so happened that Boaz allowed them to glean the grain.
