    Blood Bowl was pretty much the epitome of a gateway game for me. And by that I mean that my team is painted in my pre-school colours, I've been playing it for that long. And it's still one of my favourite games, despite me not being into sports.

    Space Hulk would be the best gateway game if GW would leave it on sale for longer than a random 5 minutes every couple of years/decade.

      I couldn't agree more, this was the game that dragged me back in from the cold when 3rd Edition came out, and it's the reason I'm the proud owner of a Terminator heavy Imperial force and a Genestealer Cult army! I also have some Harlequins kicking about thanks to the Death Masque release, which will end up expanding into my next army once I've picked some more cool models from the range. GW's been very savvy bringing these games back, now let's hope for some more support in the future! Did you get the recent White Dwarf with the air duct rules?

      On board game list videos and online rating boards, a lot of the time, Blood Bowl, Space Crusade, and Space Hulk are discounted, because the manufacturer doesn’t consistently keep the box sets in stock. I remember there was a Board Game Geek rundown a while ago where they said Space Hulk is the best board game ever, by far, but they couldn’t rank it due to it being reviewbombed and taken out of production all the time.

    Personally, I like both fantasy and sci-fi and though I can enjoy playing sports, I'm not into sports as a fan. There are 2 things that really made it for me in Blood Bowl:
    - the incredible humour; the game doesn't take itself seriously and gently mocks the whole American football show
    - the sort of rpg aspect where you create your team from scratch (who they are, where they come from, what team colours and why...), and in a league, your team can change (some players can die, others will get hired and some can get xp)
    Theoe are the two major aspects where I preferred buying BB than SH (though both are excellent)

    The rules have been streamlined 20 years ago with the 3rd edition. The current rules are (mostly) the result of a long exercise of user feedback and community testing. So they work pretty well and did not need much of a retrofit.

    After sixteen years away from the hobby, the re-realease of Blood Bowl is what has got me back into the hobby. I admit I was actively looking to get back into the hobby for a while - BB is what convinced me I could.
    Being a "grown-up" now, I don't have the same amount of time and money I did when I played in the past, and that is also true of my friends. With Blood Bowl I don't need to paint hundreds of miniatures, scenery etc, and it doesn't take a full afternoon to play either. It's basically less of a commitment and is more compatible with my life now.
    Will I go on to play other table tops? Maybe! It'll certainly be easier now that I have some paints etc
    So from my perspective, it's a good gateway game for return gamers.
    Oh and this channel has also been instrumental in getting me back into the hobby. Thanks!

    I'm from the UK and can confirm that when I first played Blood Bowl in 1989 I was a fan of NFL. My friends and I used to collect the stickers in albums and try to catch the late night matches on Channel 4, my favourite team was the 49ers . So for my friends and me Blood Bowl was the perfect gateway game at the time. Most of us were fairly geeky in our interests anyway, so gaming was a fairly natural thing for us to do. Then along came Heroquest, Space Crusade, Space Hulk WH40k etc etc...... I gave my copy away years ago, but held onto my painted metal teams. Which was lucky, as last year (before the new version was released) I found a copy of the 3rd edition in a charity shop for less than £1 !! So i can ressurect my old teams and get playing again, but this time my daughter will be my main opponent. The circle of life.

      I live in the US, but I made Blood Bowl teams based off of NFL teams... not that Blood Bowl itself didn't do that with teams like the Orkland Raiders and Dwarf Giants. I made a Elf Team named the Anaheim Rams and a Skaven Team called the Green Bay Rat Pack. I too kept my stuff, but I have no kids to pass it onto. No giant 'astro turf' styrofoam board now days, eh?

    Just picked it up this week. It's the last GW game I'm willing to get into because I "main" warmahordes. I plan to own every team as they get released both as an ode to my love of the Old World, but also to enjoy a good rules set that I can pull out when friends are over. I like the idea of getting a league going with friends, without pressuring them into spending money, assembling, learning to paint, and then actually painting their whole team.

    Blood bowl was my gateway game, but the original crappy PC version. I think after seeing it on RUclips I was intrigued, bought it and played for a few years. Then when the 2nd came out I've been a big player of that, and it led me to be interested in the lore, which led to me buying a Age of Sigmar army and now finally blood Bowl itself. For me the biggest barrier for a new player is I'm the kind of person who wants to do something a lot. So I want to be building, painting and playing armies, but the fact I can't really transport my fragile elves stopped me playing much, which stopped me painting much, and I still haven't finished the army. Forward wind to today and I was excited to play and paint blood bowl figures, but with games workshops crappy subpar rosters in the box, I've been waiting around for more positionals or orc team boxes to be released before I really start playing, and so again I'm drifting away from the hobby. Sorry that was long but I hope that gives you an insight into what it's like to be starting the hobby, for me at least, in Britain

  • @vermelsilk5833
    @vermelsilk5833 7 лет назад +4

    I began with warhammer 8th edition. It was a huge mountain of new information I just had to absorb in order to play. Luckily, I enjoy building and painting which helped.
    Now I'm playing age of sigmar and must admit I prefer that system way more due to having the wall of rules among the warscrolls instead of in the basic rules. I have perfect understanding of my army, the basic rules and the scenarios now. Which also made it easy for me to learn others this game, it does not take 2 hours to learn the basics, or play the game of 1000pts. All in all, Age of Sigmar is a pretty good wargame for beginners and experts alike as it is now, if you are into fantasy ofc.
    Then again, the beginner need a veteran who has a pedagogical mindset when teaching. All communities within wargaming need that one guy who knows how to teach a person in a way which allows that individual to grasp the fun. However, this also means all beginners has to be directed to "that guy" at all times to avoid the risk of sad stories.

    You hit the nail on the head early in the video. It depends upon the what you're into. Sci-fi might work for some, fantasy for others. This game is designed more around a sport aspect, which draws another demographic. So yeah, its a gateway game, but maybe not for everyone.

    The moment that I first played Guild Ball, I knew that it was a great game, and their Kick Off box set was a great gateway game. It surpasses Blood Bowl on everything that I personally value in a game. (If anyone wants to know why badly enough, just ask)

    Just got into blood bowl. I had been curious about it for about a decade,but never gave it a try until recently.. it's easily one of my favorite games ever made, and I'm a guy that owns over 100 board games and has been a into tabletop/video games for over 15 years. I think It's got a perfect amount of tactics and strategy mixed with chaotic push your luck "go for Glory" dice rolling .. I don't like having luck be a key factor in my games, but in blood bowl I always feel like I'm mostly in control of my game, so the luck factor just becomes an added excitement factor for me. It also keeps the game from feeling stale. When things go sideways, you are gifted with this awesome dynamic puzzle/situation to try and overcome.
    If your reading this and on the fence about blood bowl...buy this game. The new edition is incredible value and it's a game that gets better each time you play it. It creates stories with all it's wild and statistical improbable moments. And it's a fun hobby project. If you hate it, the after market will give you nearly full price or more depending on the availability in your area. Happy gaming. 😎🏈🎲🎲🎲

    Human balls are made from Pigskin. Orks... Squigs. Dwarfs are stone, metal and gems. Skaven... Metal capped Warpstone. :P
    I don't think Blood Bowl is aimed at sports fans at all honestly... while it may look like such... it doesn't play like such. It plays like a very elaborate strategy game. That's not an edge case at all... as most players of this game are not generally sports people... as this game is NOT fast to play and you must make very calculated moves and positioning. Then you fall prey to the dice gods and your player trips and snaps their neck.

    I think Blood Bowl is decent as a gateway game, but not perfect, as it's missing an important but oft overlooked element - you can't use your Blood Bowl teams in any other GW game. Mordheim is nigh perfect, because except for very special characters, your warband can be drawn directly from your Age of Sigmar army, and is therefore a very good to great gateway game. Gorka Morka can use Orks from your 40K army, and is very good (you can't use the trukks anywhere else, and they're the focus of the game, otherwise it'd be great). Space Hulk, also great, because you're just using Terminators and Genestealers straight from the main game with some simple paper maps (and while GW was selling the board game sets, a great cheap way to get a bunch of both models as starters for both armies). BattleFront really pegged this with their (Gale Force Nine produced) Tanks line, to the point that their new Flames of War plastic model sets that are also in the Tanks game, come with the cards for Tanks.

    • @blktom
      @blktom 7 лет назад

      The counter to that is that it is a cheap way of getting into gaming. Even if you play Necromunda or Mordheim you are looking at spending big money, even with those figs, to get into AoS and 40k. You can play BB forever with those figs or minimal upgrades. And by providing two teams, allows you to play with someone else whenever you want.

    • @garrettcolas
      @garrettcolas 7 лет назад

      The trucks from Gorka Morka are legal to use in 40k. Those are the old model for the ork trukk, and GW supports every model they've ever made.
      The small Rhinos from the 90s are legal, the original terminators on 25mm bases are also still legal. You aren't required to use the new larger base sizes as long as the model is on the base it came with.

    What is everyone's opinion on Star Wars Armada? All the miniatures are pre-painted so it is somewhat easier to justify and get into for those who don't enjoy painting, yet still contains a lot of complexity in the actual game. It is definitely overshadowed by its cousin, X Wing, but I still think it has a worthy place in the wargaming scene. As a Warhammer AoS Player, I think the whole idea of big fleet battles is a really appealing, welcome change and open to a lot of tactical depth. So far I've only bought the Core Set, but I'm going to my local shop tomorrow to pick up two more ships. Suffice to say, I'm rather hooked.

    • @mikolajwitkowski8093
      @mikolajwitkowski8093 7 лет назад +1

      Armada will cost you more than X-Wing. Which makes sense, ships are physically bigger. The gameplay is more... I'm not sure if deep but it requires a lot of forward planning, much more than X-Wing. So, a very good game, I think it is hurt a bit by looking similar to X-wing while being a lot different.

    To add a perspective that rather proves your point.
    Like you I got into the hobby thanks to sci-fi, Space Crusade for me. I had 2nd and 4th Ed 40k, but fell out of the hobby for over a decade.
    My gaming interests tends to sci-fi, but my reading for fantasy.
    I'm a huge sports fan, most sports, but my sport of choice is rugby (only stopped playing when my eldest was born 3 years ago, aside from one game 6 months back.
    Bloodbowl has worked perfectly as a gateway game for me. The sports hook, the fantasy hook, it's exactly what I needed to get me interested, at a point in my life I was looking for something to replace my rugby playing. I've entered a league starting in a couple of weeks, and played 3 "friendly" games so far
    Off the back of that I've not only bought an Amazon BB team, but I also bought the frostgrave rules and a few minis, and I'm looking to get into that, malifaux, necromunda and maybe Guildball. My taste is skirmish, ideally with a campaign angle (narrative style games)
    This isn't everyone's idea of a gateway game, as you rightly say, but for some of us it is perfect
    And that for me is the point of GWs specialist games, something they forgot when they sacked them off. These small scale games are what bring people into the hobby. And even at a small scale it's not cheap. With the box, Death Zone, paints (lots) and accessories I've probably sunk pushing £150 into GW, plus money elsewhere
    Specialist games are what GW needs if it hopes to grow its player base. I'm already spreading myself too thin game system wise, and yet I'm still eyeing up AoS as something else that interests me. (Surprisingly I find myself bored by the direction 40k has gone)

    I began wargaming in about... 2002 (Warhammer 40K). Blood Bowl always seemed stupid to me because if you are playing orcs or vampires or elves, it should be an army, amirite?
    A while ago a friend from the circle of friends with whom I play games (whether via internet or on the table) bought Blood Bowl 2 and got the others into it, too. They planned a small tournament and I had to join to not get excluded for the time.
    My first team was orcs and I played without much joy until one of my black orcs stumbled and broke his neck. Then I got really salty. At that time I did not know about journeymen so I replaced the dead black orc with a goblin. And the goblin... was fun. Suddenly I realised how deep, tactical and fun Blood Bowl could be.
    Currently, I am painting the human team from the starter box.

    Greetings,
    I bought the boardgame "Blood Bowl" and I would like suggestion of TEAMS to buy.
    I was thinking to buy only 2 teams from this list:
    - Blood Bowl: Chaos Chosen Team
    - Blood Bowl: Dark Elf Team
    - Blood Bowl: Dwarf Team
    - Blood Bowl: Skaven Team
    What team do you suggest ?
    Thanks.

    You seem to forget one thing that make people addict to Blood Bowl: FUN (and humour), which other GW games lack. Blood Bowl coaches basically doesn't like to make WAR, they prefer to have FUN. That's basically what differentiate us.

    The first blood bowl game was a gateway game for me to introduce me to miniature wargaming. Now i'm playing wh40k, whfb/aos and im thinking of getting into Malifaux.
    The fun thing is that i HATE sports, i really hate it with all my heart, but i found Blood bowl to be really fun but it was mostly because of the miniatures. I would love to play Space hulk, i really dont understand why they wont remake the game because the demand seems to be pretty high.
    Hey Atom! Great video, as always! I'm a big fan of your content :)

      The reason i think that Blood Bowl was a good gateway game was because it was cheap! I just needed my standard vampire team, which costed like 25 euro if i remember correctly, but now aos kind of fill that void of "cheap" gateway game.

    Hey, so, new here, love your vids :D
    I'm trying to get into tabletop gaming, Age of Sigmar specifically. Loved Warhammer since the Warhammer MMO (Age of Reckoning) and way back when I was a kid seeing a few guys playing it at some game store I played a smash bros tourney at.
    I recently bought the starting kit for the Ironjawz, but once I'm done painting, and maybe add a few more pieces to the mix, how do I go about finding a group to play with? I've searched online, and maybe I just don't know where to look, but I cant find a good hub or forum.

    • @michaelvolpa7771

      Also... What's the best way to get accustomed to the rule-set? They seem overly complicated (in a cool way, but still a barrier for a newbie) Normally I'd get two players worth, and play vs myself to understand, and to tweak my forces (coming from a Pokemon TCG standpoint, but in that regard, it's much easier to make 2 players worth)

    What's people's thoughts one using third party figures? I've got some third party lizardmen because they look really good and I've never converted anything before so It was easier. I don't want to wait around for gw to release some, just wanted to jump into the game.

      that all depends on the league you are in. The one I play in has no qualms with 3rd party figs (or even unpainted ones), and I've seen some that look rather amazing, and as far as me personally, as long as the figs look nice it shouldn't matter

  • @antoine257

    I like blood bowl exactly because it is not pure fantasy. It has a foot in reality, it's humoristic, uses some codes and funny references of our present time. And I really don't care about american football (I am French...actually one of the biggest community of blood bowl gamers is in France, a country which has absolutely no link with american football). I used to play warhammer and blood bowl when I was teenager, and now, 20 years later, I am back in blood bowl, but I know I will never go further in the hobby. I guess all games have different publics.

    GW should do BB 40K. Instant hit guaranteed. Also, they should really re-think how they make the models for it. There are plenty of companies now that have been making BB miniatures and they're all much better than GW's products. I have around 14 BB teams and only 1 of them is made with GW models (still not their BB models, I've customized regular WFB minis).

      I actually think that it's kinda funny how much GW has gotten wrong when it comes to American Football. While I know Soccer is played on a pitch, football is played on a field. Players who aren't current in the football game don't go to a dugout (that's baseball), that stand on the sidelines.

  • @CatchFlipsidE

    I really have to disagree on this one. Regardless of the fantasy and sports angle, there's nothing about Warhammer in Blood Bowl except for the fantasy races.
    You talked about how the teams were already colored. This would cause someone new to most likely not even try to paint their team. And, you mentioned trying to paint Orc armor without and leaving the sprue green color for their skin... that'd be tough without some kind of primer to get the paint to stick. The models are are very slick, and painting or washing just won't work well without a primer base. And, if you only want to paint the armor, the masking process would be so difficult that it'd probably turn someone off to the game immediately.
    I honestly haven't played Space Hulk, but from what little I've seen, it has much more of a 40K feel to it that could actually be a gateway into the 40K lore. Silver Tower is a great example from the fantasy side. Rules may be slightly changed, but there's enough that's the same that it could open up someone to the idea of wanting their own 40K figures.
    Blood Bowl, while a good game, has figures that are nothing like anything else in the Fantasy Line and can't be used in AoS games.
    Is Blood Bowl something you could bring to a friend's house on a board game day and enjoy with others (even though it's not really a board game)? Yeah, sure. Is it something that will give anyone (even sports and fantasy fans) a reason to want to get into AoS and 40K? I really don't think so.

    • @CatchFlipsidE
      @CatchFlipsidE 7 лет назад

      Actually, an Escalation League seems like a much better way to get someone started in AoS or 40K than Blood Bowl. My store is currently running where you buy a character from a blister pack (or its equivalent... so that everyone is on more-or-less even ground... so like no Monstrous Creatures). We have two weeks to paint the single model with painting lessons going on at the store for free. And, then we start the league with just the one model. Points or units will go up as the league continues, but nothing has been announced yet.
