That thumbnail shows why I can't deal with modern anime, that change in style is insane. 90s anime like Ninja Scroll was full of ADULTS. No children in sight, R-Rated, mature and stylish, timeless. A lot of them took place outside of a school setting. Yet it's like anime today is made for pre-teens exclusively. Look at the difference in their eyes in the thumbnail. It's like, a completely different genre and tone. Like they wanted to make something they could more easily turn into toys by comparison. That's what anime feels like today, least to me.
Felt. Even making that thumbnail was hard because i had to line up benisato's semi-realistic face proportions with dakis big ass christmas ornament eye that takes up a third of her face. To be fair though, a decent amount of shows are still dropping with a more realistic style/adult tone. They just tend not to be as popular...with the exception of like... idk Vinland Saga...
Agreed, Ninja Scroll looks beautiful, as do a lot of 80s/90s OVAs. Take one look at the OG Sonic OVA and tell me what anime still looks like that lmao. Long story short, you can blame the “moe boom” of the 80s and 90s for that, combined with the falling off of cel animation into the digital anime we know now. In the 80s and 90s (alongside the more adult anime, they coexisted actually and even combined on multiple occasions, trust me old cutesy anime would literally have anime highschool girls with their bare chest out a LOT, which was from anime being even more unregulated than today) starting with Daicon and early magical girl shows, anime girls started getting cuter, more cartoony features than even the 60s, and shorter (mainly to appeal to the weird otakus of the 80s and 90s who were very much still a thing even before the cutesy anime boom) as designs became more simplistic and more catering towards anime watchers than original concepts. The hyper detailed, mature OVA style fell out of fashion and started leaning into the more cutesy anime we know know. In a sense these anime/manga still exist and are called Seinen, just not nearly as prevalent as they were in the 80s/90s because of cute, more fan service-y anime completely overshadowing them. The style is still very lost to time though, I agree. The Sailor Moon style of 90s anime is popularized, but the hyper detailed OVA/mature style very much isn’t mainly because of it being somewhat a “lost art”. Modern anime is also mainly targeted towards either teens or, more-so in Japan but also in the US, weirdos who buy bunny outfit figures of anime characters who either resemble or straight up are minors, which is why a lot of anime caters to that crowd. I just find demon slayer to be a hard watch. I like my anime to have lore and depth in the story. It feels like the world just spawned in when episode 1 started. theres no worldbuilding and the character development is just meh
Horses are very good swimmers. The combination of long necks and big lungs means they float pretty well, and on some islands/coastal areas whole herds of horses go swimming during the hottest hours of the day to stay cool. The horse jetski image is still hilarious though. ;)
40:52 that "you know a _____ is on some whole other sh!t when he rides his horse into the water like that sh!t's a jet-ski" always makes me laugh every time I hear it🤣🤣
The main problem with demon slayer is that when it tries to worldbuild, it just drops them immediately. Remember how the demon slayer corp has a ranking system? Of course you don't, it was only brought up twice, once in the first season after the test, and in the red light district in a blink and you'll miss it line from inosuke where he mentions their new ranks. Couldn't we get like a ceremony scene to show the significance of it, heck even a recap episode where they go over their journey and mistakes. Why but the time to establish a ranking system if you aren't going to use it. Edit: felt like I'm giving the impression that you cannot like demon slayer, that's not true. It's a series that you can enjoy and love. It's just that when it comes to the story and world building, it needs work. The manga is okay I guess, the fights are kinda confusing to follow(if you've seen a demon slayer fight panel you know what I mean), which is why the anime is the superior means of enjoying demon slayer. Like I may have these problems, but I can still rewatch the series and have a good time. Edit 2: just remembered that a demon slayer corp member mentions that he's a higher rank when our main cast is going into the spider forest. So 3 times, but two barely define the system.
You see their ranking system with the various jobs they do, like the ones that help in recovery or transportation. I think it definitely comes down to what they're most skilled at along with trimming the fat for the anime. It doesn't come into play too heavily because those at the top are the Hashira and we see a lot of them, so it seems that's all we need to know right??
@@lavishjules you can't just chalk it up to "that's all we need to know". I guarantee you that if you remove the existence of the ranking system, nothing would change. The hashira would still exist since they even say that the title of hashira isn't apart of the ranking system. The point of a ranking system is to gauge the strength of a character, how dangerous a quest is in the story, and how far your cast has come in their journey. The only way I know how strong tanjiro has gotten is not by the demon corp ranking system, but the demon moon numbers(which is another problem with demon slayer).
Anime mistake #19 Using ranking systems that don't mean squat because no one falls in those criterions they set up. Few anime actually follow their ranking system.
yeah no i remember the ranking system, its not required to mention it all the time. Also its not a book, i understand world biulding and it's better to be more detailed in a book, rather than a show. But I do understand your critique.
@@dw9524 Demon slayer's story is just simple but not even bad. Ya'll just love to hate on its because of its immense success, like use ur brain, if the story really was that 'bad' then why is anybody watching it at all? yall say its because of the animation but look at fate, fire animation but still not as popular as other trending animes.
He probably had adrenaline and he didn't, because adrenaline only kicks in when your body is about to die, and why would your body produce adrenaline when it never had a "of shit we about to die" moment
He used the hardest part of his forehead to bash the villains nose and eyes where there is more soft cartilage. Any lower and he would have teeth imbedded in his skull. Any higher and he would have gotten a concussion
The headband gives a +8 to headbutt damage, but all the stats are in English and the language hadn't reached Edo yet so nobody in this story knows what their gear does
The yellow subtitles did it for me. Nice touch. Ninja Scroll is a classic. I had it on VHS cassette. VHS was before DVDs. DVDs were before Blu-rays. Blu-rays were before stream.
That's how a lot of Samurai/Ronin stories are: The hero wins, but doesn't get the girl/doesn't get to settle down. It's a lot like cowboy movies that way.
I think it's perfect. Jubei was forced to take the hero role cause he was poisoned. It was never about the money. Jubei ended up finding someone he could trust and eventually love. It was short lived but it was REAL. Love was the most important thing that Jubei earned from the event and that love will forever remain in his heart.
Bro, you really can beak down and tell a story in a most superb and enjoyable way. As a child, this anime hit me hard. I was six years at the time. Great video bro.
Legit. Demon Slayer is a perfect example of tell dont show. A child could watch it and still understand but compared to the old 80s anime, heeecccckkkk nah. That kid would be traumatized 50 ways till Sunday before ever knowing what the story was about. Even as an adult watching this, the level of story building and seriousness created in Ninja Scroll is top notch and I'm sure it was really popular in niche groups.
So true lol. I do think that we'll enter a new renaissance of anime soon but the past few years has been terrible for anime but because anime coincidentally became popular at the same time in western mainstream culture ppl take whats been out recently as a good standard. Relatively they're such poor quality compared to the most basic 80s and 90s anime. I qas watching record of lodoss war and was taken aback by how amazing the world building was. Simple yet so complex even for the late 20th century animation industry.
@@dw9524 Haha, most basic 80s and 90s anime. You're deluded. Ninja Scroll WAS and STILL is considered a masterpiece. It was never normal, nor it was a standard. It was special back then and still special now. Get away with the survivorship bias nonsense. Every era of anime is full of their own boring, streamlined product and cheap trash.
us raised on 80s and 90s anime were spoiled beyond belief and now all we can do is scoff at all this modern stuff after like 2008, unless it has some little bits and sections animated by one of the legends we grew up watching.
The algorithm sent me. Just wanted to chime in and say I really like your format with the altered subtitles, that had me laughing my ass more than a few times. You're skill at breaking down the story, choosing the important parts without just retelling the entire story note for note while also adding some really funny shit is impressive and you've earned a sub for me.
Blood, that was one of the best narrations I’ve ever heard (I’m a grown ass 40 year old). I love ninja scroll, I felt like I was watching it again with you for the first time. Thank you, sincerely.
This animation is 100x better than most anything I've seen in recent history with only one or two exceptions where it's only around 3-3x as good. This animation is so wildly good
@@RoundOfApplauseChannel It's pretty brutal when you're watching it. A lot of people die messily, there's some slower segments, and it's kind of horrifying watching Kagero die from betrayal while Jubei ends up alone again. It's still awesome though.
I could see many of the reference overlap in demon slayer and how similar it looked to her first iteration of demon slayer concept arts as well, but I think it blossomed beautifully into its own story💖 and I see the freedom she took with her own story and characters as well, and she fleshed her characters out more as it was reiterated into valuing the traits of humanity and weight of the choices you make and its effects on you and others.
I was so young when I saw this movie for the first time. It was in the Blockbuster anime section and I watched everything they had. Good times. Probably the best thing growing up was blockbuster and ps2.
Personally I don’t disagree with the “unoriginal concept” criticism, I just don’t understand what makes it a criticism at all. Swordsmen killing monsters has been a popular trope since millennia before any of these stories because it’s really cool. Why not use it when you want to tell a cool story? The specific themes you want to explore will fit into the details and characters of that reliable greater setting. Demon slayer succeeds at what it is trying to be, people who complain about what that is really should be saying “it’s not for me”, not “it is poorly done”.
The story and characters in Demon Slayer are pretty generic and don't stand out much. What makes it popular is the incredible animation by Ufotable. The original manga itself doesn't offer much depth or substance I've never heard a single anime fan that has actually watched more than 10 animes actually be interested in the story
@@itro3118 Read the last paragraph. You being bored by anything that isn't totally original (as if there was such a thing) is a matter of your personal preferences, and has nothing in particular to do with the actual quality of the story being told.
30:20 nah i argue the difference in seeing the stuck shortsword and being the absolute unit that he is, Jubei purposefully fell under it. Yea Mumu may have heard it get stuck but he'd quicker lose track of a specific stationary object in a forest like that with so many things for sound to bounce off of. Seeing it and being able to plan around it won Jubei the fight😅

Being submerged in gold alone wouldn't form a thick enough layer to trap him. Once he's done regenerating, he could simply break through it, similar to how Smaug does in The Hobbit.

NGL, this is one of the silliest and most fun retellings of an iconic story from my youth. Ninja scroll was one of the first anime to be available across the pond. Back when it was tucked away as one of the three or four "Japanimation" in video stores. On VHS. (Yep. I pre-date the internet... much like this anime.) Also, you're doing such a great job with pronouncing the Japanese names! That's definitely worth boosting your algorithm!
Nah, main character powers... and switching to hitting the nose/eye area after the first couple. In real life, Jubei's face would be a massive bruise and he'd have a headache for a couple weeks from that.
I remember back when we were kids this was like THE badass anime. I remember people saying shit like “I bet you haven’t even seen ninja scroll yet” and calling you a nub. lol for the 90’s this shit was pure fire 🔥
I'll always appreciate Demon Slayer for streamlining the shonen genre. Some people were upset with his training arc was short but its like Spider-Man origins. We get it, we've seen it
"Streamlining" a story because of some meta-reason down to external series that have nothing to do with you already having done the same story beats (and better) feels weird though. Demon Slayer isn't one of many "Demon Slayer" series stretching back decades, like how one Spiderman is one of many Spiderman series, but the fact it does this anyways makes it feel like it's acknowledging its own unoriginality in the face of its predecessors. It'd only make sense if it was subverting them or playing it for comedy, like with Chainsaw Man or Gintama, but instead DS is the most shouneny-shounen of all.
@@spriggylotus4476 gotta disagree, I don't want to write an essay on the subject because I have a migraine. I just think not being able to cut the fat from a genre because it's not an anthology is akin to not being able to experiment with a genre because it's not an anthology. I'm not going to pretend it's the best to ever do it like I won't pretend Bob's Burger is the peak of adult animation but I enjoy it for avoiding some of the common pitfalls they could've got caught in.
@@sketchysketches381 Fair enough. I guess you gotta respect how DS owns being a battle shounen through and through, and takes itself completely sincerely.
@@spriggylotus4476 that’s how I view it. Way too many manga try to grab 5 different story line ideas at once. AOT screwed up its entire second half by trying to change the formula too much. DS is just fun. The characters stay true to themselves, the fights are really fun and the storyline doesn’t do any stupid bs to be different
Wait people actually complained about short training arcs? I remember reading Naruto and getting annoyed about how the story would come to a screeching halt to show how Naruto masters a new jutsu.
It's not just anime that was superior back in the day, it was also films, shows, and music as well. Right around 2010 is when everything started wilting into vapidity.
The minute this man said "Ninja Scroll" I had a entire flashback to remembering watching the whole thing that female ninja's story was a crazy story for kid me
I absolutely love the way magic/abilities work in some of these old anime. There isn't really a coherent power system or explanation, other than maybe some vague references to mythology, but every ability feels unique and suited to a character without being busted. It still feels like no matter what kind of shenanigans someone can pull off, they're still just a person and can be killed like any other person
I finished the whole thing despite taking a few hours break and i was still hooked when i came back. Felt like i watched it myself, great video, loved it.
I remember watching Ninja Scroll when I was a kid. My parents had just gotten a new cable TV package (YIKES, I'm old), and it had a bunch of international channels, and even an _anime channel._ Let's just say I was too young to have watched it then, though, b/c although I can't remember most of it, I have this vague feeling of being *scarred for life.*
I showed this movie to my wife recently and when Kagero got bitten she laughed and said 'Hah! Pussy snake. Oldest trick in the book.' I love this woman with my whole heart.
I don't know what I was expecting when I saved this to watch later... but I'm so glad I came across this lol. Now I want to watch this movie fr. This commentary though - unhinged & I love it lmao! Especially the part where he has to choose between dying or being intimate with a girl he likes that likes him back. If I were him though, I would have thought it was some trap somehow because why so easy? But the fact that he turned her down makes me laugh even more LOL. Like, is he just commited to being a martyr?
He uploaded this long ass video instead of making a series. so that he couldn’t “forget about it” but I would do the same thing to that old man if I was poisoned
Fun(possible)fact: Mk1 (2024) actually has a fatality from sub-zero if I'm right , actually references a kill of a enemy from ninja scrolls if I am not wrong. Update: I just checked sub-zero fatalities from mk1(ps5) to be sure and yup its definitely a ninja scrolls reference.

@@Gryphon_2006 Yusuke Yurameshi wins, but not by much. Jubei is second, but would have won if it were an actual fight.
But I do understand your critique.
no time for that when we got demons to murdaahhhhhh
I like the fact that he killed the snake girl out of petty. he was just looking for anything, even so little, to get rid of her. just out of petty

Most don't know the Director of Ninja Scroll also works on the team of Demon Slayer
Bet the director is punching himself at how terrible the industry and quality of storytelling has gone down from the golden age
@@dw9524are you kidding? Demon slayer is still incredible and an obvious labor of love.
nah, he just did storyboards for one episode in Season 1, he's definitely not "on the team".

I think that headband was why his headbutt was doing crazy damage. Idk how it saved him from brain damage though
thats the funny part. it didn't
he just has CTE now but prolly had it already
The fact that he was just left with the lady’s headband is just depressing
yeah.... felt like a hole was just dug in my chest
I dead ass listened to this whole synopsis all while being 100% entertained by your commentary. Earned a subscribe!
Ninja Scroll was VERY popular among Western anime aficionados in the days before social media.
I watched old anime as a child like neon genesis evangalion,in terms of a modern anime which reminds me of old anime it has to be dororo
This man's narrarorating got him a subscriber by itself. I've seen this movie more than once. And the way it was narrated kept me in tune lmao
Afro Samurai is the first thing that came to mind during that bridge ambush scene. That's definitely inspired by it
think both made by MAD
Personally I don’t disagree with the “unoriginal concept” criticism, I just don’t understand what makes it a criticism at all.
Swordsmen killing monsters has been a popular trope since millennia before any of these stories because it’s really cool. Why not use it when you want to tell a cool story? The specific themes you want to explore will fit into the details and characters of that reliable greater setting.
Demon slayer succeeds at what it is trying to be, people who complain about what that is really should be saying “it’s not for me”, not “it is poorly done”.
i js noticed you have the same pfp as my school account lol
because it being unoriginal makes it more boring, thats the criticism
@@itro3118 something being unoriginal is good that's not real criticism the main one is about the characters
Old ninja/samurai anime just had a great feel and look to it. It wasn't cutsie and was usually more serious. I really miss that style of art and portraying.
for those wondering, gold is VERY resistant to pretty much all types of corrosion and damage in the ocean (this includes various sea-life picking at it). assuming that people don't go treasure hunting in the wreckage of the final battle and find him, genma is gonna be stuck in gold for MILLIONS OF YEARS
Being submerged in gold alone wouldn't form a thick enough layer to trap him. Once he's done regenerating, he could simply break through it, similar to how Smaug does in The Hobbit.

Studio madhouse really did everything. From Lodoss War over Death Note to Frieren and even this.
