- Kolkata - Siliguri highway route has recently crossed an important milestone of having 500 kms of 4-lane road.
Here I discuss overall current situation of the 4-laning work along Kolkata to Siliguri highway route in West Bengal via Kalyani Expressway, NH 12 (NH 34), NH 27, as of July 2023. In particular, I discuss in details about Barajaguli - Krishnanagar section of NH 34 (new NH 12).

Excellent update..was eagerly awaiting for this. Even last month, to go beyond Krishnanagar, we took Dankuni - Delhi Road - Mogra flyover - STKK Road - Nabadwip route.
Please update us when taking NH-34 will become the preferred route 🙂.
Thanks. Until the end of monsoon, Delhi/STKK road will remain the preferred route. The under-construction diversions together with monsoon rain are messy combination :-). Best.
You can go easily via NH-34 if you have an offroad ready vehicle. :D btw I have gone via this route its far better now.

As usual, data enriched perfect presentation. Always pleasant. After rainy season will be waiting eagerly for update of completion of NH12 with a full length journey details from Kolkata(Dum Dum) Airport to Siliguri.
Then proposing a memorable route from Siliguri to Jayanti (Buxa Duar) via Mal Bazar -- Nagrakata -- Birpara -- Jaldapara -- Hasimara -- Hamiltonganj -- Raja bhatkhoa -- Buxa Tiger Reserve, if possible. Pl. obtain prior permission from forest officer to enter & stay at forest bit, There are fantastic wooden cottages in limited numbers. This route is enriched with a unbelievable & fantastic natural beauty.

thanks to Nitin Gadkari sir for gifting India world class road infrastructure. Btw I just took the NH34 route from Barasat to Barajaguli and then Berhampore-Jalpaiguri and it took only 12hrs 10mins to reach Jalpaiguri and that too includes one long break and frequent pee break. Six months ago same route would have taken min 16hrs.

By what time will the Kolkata-Siliguri 4 lane highway be completed in all aspects?
This is a tricky question :-) In my estimate, it will reach close to 550 km by the end of 2023. However, new 4-lane Farakka bridge in its current pace of construction will go into 2025. Kalyani expy interchange flyover and Belghoria expy connector flyover will go into 2024. Besides, around 9 km of different stretches between Krishnanagar - Berhampore are currently in court due to land compensation dispute. Best.

In last few months, the work pace for road work towards Muragacha has improved. Also, some work for service lanes below the flyover has been going on.
Frankly, it is better if they can make the service lanes operational first. Afterward, they can take their sweet time to complete the flyover. Was expecting update from you last week itself. However, commenting here in case if officials read this. Government is making this road for fast commuting between long distanced Cities. Unfortunately, the problem in Highways (National/State) specially in West Bengal is TOTO's and Engine Van's. Though it's illegal to drive on this in national Highways but unfortunately there is no enforcement on these lines.
I also dont like the Totos and engine vans running on the main carriageway. Instead they should only run on the service roads.
The widening work based on recent DPRs includes both overpasses/service lanes in most built-up localities (Kalyani Expy, Barajaguli - Krishnanagar, Raiganj - Dalkhola). Unfortuntaely, old DPRs (from Krishnanagar to Raiganj) didn't have provisions for enough overpass/service lanes. So in these sections, the problem of Toto on the main carriageway will persists, until these defects are rectified in future. Best.

4 laning is not of much use. Left lane is blocked by Electric rickshaws and slow two wheelers. Every 300 meters the local police puts up barriers that are intended more to cause accidents rather than prevent them. I just recently did a road trip from Mumbai to Arunachal and back and the roads in WB including NH34 were the biggest pain to drive through.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree with you mostly. However, before 4-laning we used drive Kolkata to Siliguri in 2 days with a overnight halt at Malda/Raiganj. :-) Now, we can do it within a day in about 12 hours or so. Another reduction of an hour and half is on the card in next 6 months, as widening work in the Kolkata-end gets completed. With best wishes.
@@GolamMHossain All the very best sir , but if the WB police insists on setting up two sets of barricades for every village, I doubt if travelling time will reduce by much. We covered distances in practically all the other states much faster than we could in WB. Even Bihar had fantastic roads and on our return journey, we made it from Guwahati to Mumbai in three driving days .. ( Day-1 Guwahati -> Siliguri , Day 2 Siliguri -> Rewa, Day 3 Rewa -> Mumbai). As you can see, the Guwahati to Siliguri was the shortest of the three stretches and took as long as the third days stretch from Rewa to Mumbai which is over 1200 km. This was the reality that I saw. But yes, compared to 2016 when I had taken the same road to Bhutan, things have improved especially at places like Dhalkola , Malda etc where one doesnt have to face horrific traffic jams at the railway crossings ..
