“If You’re On A Bicycle, Stay AWAY From The Cars!” | Motor Expert Explains Cambridge Road Junction

- A cycling road junction in Cambridge modelled on those in Copenhagen, is apparently so confusing for users that the local council have made a RUclips video explaining how to use it.
Motoring journalist and former Top Gear presenter Steve Berry says he has watched the video and thinks “it's pretty simple to follow”.
He explains: "If you're on a bicycle, stay on these coloured lanes, stay away from the cars, and you've got your own little sets of traffic lights…. which you must pay attention to!"
Ian Collins thinks the chances of people taking up cycling when they've never done it before is “about the same as somebody taking up billiards”.
He says: "You either want it, or you don't want it.”

When I lived in London I cycled mostly - quickest and best way to get around. The trick is to stop massively overcrowding the city by adding a million people to the national population each year.
You have just solved it 👏🏼
When I was a school boy I cycled to school every day (well almost), and that was at the height of rush-hour in the morning! I never had one problem with the cars and heavier vehicles. Even when the snow was 6 inches thick and solid ice underneath it.
The highway code was followed by most of the road users and speed limits were adhered too! But that was 65 years ago!
Most people on the roads, be it motorists; cyclists; motorcyclists; e-scooterists; lorry drivers don't even KNOW the Highway code! They passed it years ago!
Yes, less traffic and vehicles that were much smaller and far less insulated. Lots of glass and rattles made driving more dynamic and you felt far more connected to the environment. Modern cars almost drive themselves, they are like cocoons, quite and tiny windows with thick pillars and they are massive.
@@ruthcollins2841 Not even all the highway code but even just the basics would be good. The amount of people I see exiting roundabouts with their right indicator on is ridiculous. I reckon 95% of motorists do this.
Presumably, if you just do what the road signs and traffic lights tell you you'll be OK?
It’s not a mess we’ve just got to learn how to use it. Look at any Netherlands biking you tube. Think that looks awesome. It also rains a lot in Netherlands. It’s about the same as the UK. My Dad used to bike to work everyday and ride his bike long distance up to his passing at age 86. Was out in all weathers. Why are all these news shows slagging off bikes all of a sudden it seems to be a concerted effort against biking.
Traffic calming measures, traffic light and speed cameras are put in place because of driver behaviour.
An average of 1800 people are killed by motor vehicles every year. Compared to 1 on average per year by bicycles.
This cycling hating publicity is having a direct effect on inocenent law abiding cyclists
People used to cycle to work, when the factories built houses nearby, when houses and factories were rebuilt after WWII. Since then we've had de-industrialisation, started by blair. Houses now stand where the factories did and people have been forced to travel much further for work.
Jaguar, Massey Fergusson, Triumph Motorcycles, Triumph cars, Humber, Climax, Rolls Royce, Dunlop, Hillman, Talbot, a short list of the big factories lost to housing in my city. Then there are those lost to shopping precincts, employing a small fraction of what the likes of Herbert and Alvis did
You can hear the contempt and anger in his voice
I've been to Holland a lot, it rains there a lot too. Its not the south of France
I commute every day. The weather's not an issue thanks to waterproof overtrousers, wellies and a jacket.
What bright spark decided to put cycle lanes between the Pavement and the Bus stops?
Rains more in Copenhagen than Manchester. You're not made of sugar, cycling is better than driving for short city specific distances 9 times out of 10.
This lad is just old and angry he's been asked to embrace something new. It's pathetic.
If you're a pedestrian stay away from cyclists..... but you can't as so many are riding on our pavements.
Yep, some might not be if drivers weren't so dangerous though.
@@cyclingSausage So cyclists not wanting to put themselves at risk justifies cyclists putting pedestrians at risk apart from breaking the law.
@@truthgiver8286 No it doesn't justify it at all. I don't agree with cyclists on the pavement unless they are free of pedestrians.
@@cyclingSausage Agreed we need safe spaces for all.
Gateshead council has the policy of " we hoped that people would read the road signs and adhere" so can't wait for their version of this as it's right up their boulevard.
If you can't drive with cyclist on the roads you shouldn't be on the roads.
When I was working I was able to cycle 13 miles into work, when car drivers living less than 5 miles away used to say "weather is too bad, I can't get in" I love the cyclops junctions and the Dutch Roundabout in Cambridge.
30mph ?? Somehow I don't think so
30mph on a road or xc bike is easy. Heck, I can even get up to 30mph on my e-mountain bike if I pedal hard enough, which is only assisted to 15.5mph, has big grippy tires and weighs about 3 times a race bike. Downhill, you can do 40mph from just rolling.
How do you identify drivers with no license, MOT, insurance, VED, banned, drugged, over the D/D limit? Cyclists are an easy target for 'can't identify' comments!
In holland they have a lot of seperate roadways for cyclists this is the safest answer the red parts of these roads in the video need to fenced off from the main road
Those cycle crossings are all very well, but if you’re on a bike it makes progress really slow having to stop multiple times to perform a right turn, or go straight on. We have cycle/pedestrian crossings in our town and the signals favour the traffic flow, not those who are crossing, so you can be stood there for 5 minutes before you cross the first lane, then another 5 minutes for the second. Repeat that 4 times for a right hand turn and that’s potentially 20 minutes. Might as well use the car.
no obligation to use the bike lane - roll straight through with the motor traffic if the junction is deliberately hostile to using the bike lanes.
9:08 The bloke on the right says "The one invention that a woman's come up with 'Penicilin'." And they both agree it was Marie Curie 😆
standards of education, ay?
The trouble with that junction come roundabout is that drivers won't give priority, thereby ignoring the Highway Code, but that's nothing new.
It’s 4 crossings linked to each other FFS. The aerial shot shows you that 🙄
Rain..never stopped me cycling. Wear a bloody waterproof jacket.
If this muppet doesn't want to cycle fine..don't try and stop others
There's an island in the English Channel called Sark. It's a place where people can freely ride their bikes, as cars are banned.
I'm certain other countries have similar arrangements worlwide.
The inhabitants of Sark travel by tractor!
@@grumpyoldveteran7286
If you can ride a bike, you can walk.
Walking is better exercise.
@@danielrawlings8355 what has that got to do with tractors?
@@grumpyoldveteran7286
You mentioned tractors for some reason yet to become clear.
@@danielrawlings8355 I mentioned tractors because although there are no cars that does not mean that there are no mechanical means of transportation which would not have an impact on cyclists. If I remember correctly the number of tractors per head of population is the highest in the world.
I made my comment as an interesting fact and not to start an argument.
Even the layout gives the cyclist two ways to cross the road. Why have the cycle box in the road when they can cycle around the outside on the red route. The Council are just box tickers and don't even think about what they are implementing. Here the council have spend millions reducing the width of the road so it is too narrow to create on a new cycle path which may be used by one or two bikes a day. The rest cycle on the road as they don't have to stop at junctions. What a waste of money.
I’m a cyclist and a car driver - I hate the new cycle ways - what a waste of money. Plus they make the road narrower for the existing traffic. Plus they took over 6months to build one 1/2mile stretch. The old painted on cycle lanes were fine. I cycle and follow all the rules unlike some cyclists I see. These roundabouts are crazy. The one thing you don’t want to do on a bike is stop 4x and wait going round a minor roundabout like this. If it’s that bad to use a traditional roundabout you just have to be more careful - like us older cyclists using traditional roundabouts for the last 40years had to. I know it’s busier now but you just have to use the roads and ride more carefully amongst the traffic.
When they have to make a video, explaining how to use a junction ... the problem is FAAR bigger than ANY junction!
I have a balance disability which prevents me ever riding a bike.
I'm genuinely disappointed for you, but how is that relevant to the story? Assuming that you consequently need to drive more (although, trike? Plenty of good ones around now, you don't have to look like granny) then the more other people use bikes, the quicker you'll get to where you're going as there'll be less traffic.
It's not just the weather, Oldham is up a hill from Manchester.. Cambridge is lovely and flat

As a cyclist, motorcyclist and car driver, cars are the biggest danger to me whatever vehicle I'm using. Cyclists are in a no-win situation. Drivers say they shouldn't be on the roads because they are a hazard, and when councils build separate provision the car lobby say they are nicking our space. Cyclists don't mix with pedestrians because walkers don't respect blue paint as a no-go area. The climate issue is nonsense, Holland is a wet and windy country. What happened to live and let live libertarianism?
As a cyclist . A motorcyclist. And a car and van driver I can say that on my routes cyclists are the worst. I see daily the breaking of rules. But it's the attitude. Two and three abreast?????. On one good hill there are some that zig zag up the hill.!!!!. I have often seen lines of cars stuck behind a group of friends on bikes. They never pull over to allow traffic past. Farmers with slow tractors used to pull over. .
@@user-xl8on7sf8o nah, you're just reciting the 'I hate cyclists' tick list. You might have seen one of those situations, once, and have inflated it to make yourself angry.
@@TheTraveller20081 why do people who have nothing to say resort to insults. You shouldn't it looks stupid. I cycle every day unless there is heavy rain. At weekends I am out and about mostly in cars. So I cover a lot of miles and see many stupid road users. But when I get £680 of damage and they just cycle away. I have them on a dash cam. Love to watch this guy get up to 30mph on a bike. What a jester. What is it with this channel and their anti-cycling agenda? Both probably too lazy to ride a bike. All this empowers drivers to behave dangerously towards us cyclists.
Hey and guess what? Like most cyclists, I drive a car as well.
I 100 percent agree it's hard enough trying to stay safe as it is without this B.S. A couple of minutes in the presenter referred to myself and every other cyclist as idiots. Very intelligent debate I don't think
I'm over 70 and I can get up to 30 easily , but then I live on a very steep hill .lol.

No way can he do 30mph on a bike unless it's on a long downhill section with no traffic around.
that junction is blatantly simple, what's your problem?
Cycling sausage 30 is easy down hill
Cars and Bikes dont mix well on roads, never have and never will.
they mixed just fine until car drivers became ever more selfish and careless. And the car makers decided to market aggressively the notion that we all need monster trucks and FUVs to take little Johnny to school in.
Most cyclists either don’t understand or wilfully ignore traffic lights so how can such a contrivance work?
the detectors that control most traffic lights ignore bikes, which is high on the list of reasons why bikers sometimes have to give up waiting and ignore a red.
@@TheTraveller20081 on a city road in heavy traffic, that’s a nonsense excuse.

I have a car, and a bicycle. Driving and cycling, I see cyclists riding around, and in front of cars all the time. It's as if they're goading drivers to run into them because they know they're untouchable because of the new Highway Code rules. That ruling has made things worse. It shouldn't have, but some cyclists don't give a cr*p about anyone but themselves.
Sounds like you're the arrogant one..
So because a cyclist is in front of you...they are goading you to run them over ?
You for real ?
Cycling is selfish.
Lorries & coaches must be prioritised as they provide goods and services for multiple people.
How's it selfish? Should I be handing out money whilst I'm cycling to compensate?
@@cyclingSausage
Cycling caters for 1 (one) person only.
Britain's busy roads are insufficiently wide to overtake a bike, at a safe distance, without causing a hazard to oncoming traffic.
Bikes cause congestion with following traffic slowing, or even stopping, severely disrupting traffic flows.
All caused by one selfish individual choosing to use a bike.
Then, in the final seconds, the selfish bike mounts the pavement & disappears from view.
Selfish, selfish & selfish.
@@danielrawlings8355 What about tandems? Do you think car drivers without passengers are also selfish?
@@cyclingSausage
Single occupancy cars result from various causes. Vehicles are built to facilitate multiple passengers. Bikes are built for single occupancy.
Seldom are tandems used or seen in large towns & cities. Indeed, the bike park stations can't accommodate such bikes. Invariably they're built for single selfish bike rider's bikes.

Just simply watching the video play out on the right side wile they chatted I lost count of how many cyclists broke the rules and did not follow the very simple system, and at no time did a single car break the rules of the road only cyclists, think this says it all, I have been saying for years that there needs to be consequences for there actions regarding cyclists, they regularly break the rules and as there is no registration they have total anonymity, this needs to stop.
