There used to be a lot of snobbery around Classically trained musicians going back to the 60s. This snobbery is still there in some circles and even Two Set violins ect...What classically trained musicians don't realise is that you should never compare popular music to classical music. They are two very different things. Another aspect is that people think high information music or elaborate sophistication is somehow better. This isn't true because almost anyone can write a piece of music and make it complex and dizzying just so that people will say 'wow, that's so complex ect...' It's just as difficult to write a great love song as it is to write a great classical piece. In all genres there is great music and not so great. It has always been that way and it will always be that way.
@@MICKEYISLOWD As far as TwoSet goes I'm pretty sure there "anything that isn't classical is bad" thing is caricature. Eddy listens to a lot of popular music but classical is obviously their preference
The best line I heard from him was to the question about Slipknot music being angry. 20 plus years later, are you still angry? His answer was something like "not anymore, but when I slip the mask on, and get ready to go on stage, I remember that angry young guy and he comes out to play"
Lmao from now on I will only refer to breakdowns as dance breaks. That’s kinda what they are really. Too perfect 😂 and yes modern metal heads are obsessed with breakdowns, cause breakdown go brrrrr!!!!!
@@Luckypants2113 Nothing wrong with a good breakdown, though! It's definitely better if you spice it up composition-wise. Combining solos and breakdowns is starting to become more common, or even just doing more weird shit with it. Gotta keep the dynamics going.
"it didn't go to G or Bb?" I think that's kind of the point, honestly. Given the themes of the song, never resolving to the root of the key sort of serves the message a bit better, because it keeps you anxious for it. Gives you that psychosocial feeling.
Yes the clean vocals have more musicality to it, but the growls carry more emotion. In my view, emotionally effecting your audience is most important. Those are usually the songs that sick with people. These growls really evoke the anger, and frustration in the lyrics. To be honest, it does take a while to get use to it at first. Great reaction. Love your videos.
A lot of people say Metal is better with singers like Rob Halford, Ozzy, and Dio, but I just don’t think it carries the aggression that screams can. However, Bands that are always screaming like Infant Annihilator are emotionally flat; yeah, it’s aggressive, but it’s so constant, it becomes monotonous, to me. I think combining singing and screams is the best way to really get the emotions going. Pantera and Slipknot are pretty good at it.
@@joshua.merrill Absolutely. Over used makes the song emotionally unimpactfull, in my opinion. Slipknot became great at using variations for emotional connection.
Also with Corey Taylors growls, he still articulates and pronounces words well so you can hear mostly all the words. it really helps me connect with the emotion and meaning behind the songs as opposed to some metal groups that their vocals are indistinguishable. Another vocalist that I love is Tatiana from the band Jinjer. Her and Corey are my 2 favourite metals vocalists/top 5 vocalists period.
It's hard to believe that anyone hasnt heard of slipknot. They've had multiple huge radio hits since the early 2000s. Probably one of the heaviest bands to get massive radio play.
The line "The limits of the dead' remind me of a line in the movie The Ten Commandments when Moses is explaining to Rameses on why he gave the slaves temple wheat and one day in seven to rest. Referring to making bricks, "The strong make many. The weak make few. The dead make none." Just a thought.
Metal music from my interpretation (being a lifelong metal head), is meant to bond us. To bring us together and let each other know we aren’t alone. Anger, hurt, betrayal, sadness, love all is real and true emotions. Truly sad when people judge or don’t take the time to understand and judge the “noise”. Appreciate this reaction, interpretation, and understanding ❤️ hope this is just the tip of the iceberg!
yes, people most of the time stop their thoughts on the first look, the external part, and not often try to understand or get the inner meaning. Metalheads LOVE to play with edgy themes and look like they eat babies as a diner, but most of the time they are the kindest, nicest, most open minded, empathic and i can go on like this for a long time, people you can meet. The superficial side is just an armor to hide the desillusion and sadness about the society and how the world works. They are the most sane and true people i ever met, of course with some exceptions... but if more people really tried to get the ideas and fit this mood, the world would be a much better place for everyone.
To me it's like a collective outlet. A way to vent off anger and frustration through feeling the music. Which would explain why metalheads are the jolliest people I've ever met.

Doug, you really need to check out a song off of Dissection's "Storm of the Light's Bane" album. It's an absolute masterpiece in the metal genre and one of the best metal albums of all time. The songs Where dead angels lie, and also Thorns of crimson death are my favorites. The whole album has classical elements and just overall amazing from front to back. No filler - all killer.

I agree with liking the normal singing better than death metal growling. But I really like how they mixed those styles here in the piece. It adds interesting contrast. Great hard core metal song. Enjoyed your review.
I think the beauty and real use of songs and art like this is reflected in how much you thought and talked after it. As much as I like other music types; it makes you think and reflect and clearly it did you too!
Kudos to you Dough for trying to work out what Key(s) they were playing in. This track has a really great driving Hook and chorus… one of my favourites from the band - You should attempt more from this band imo 🤘🏼
Great track and it was interesting to hear your thoughts and feelings on this song. I have always considered the USA to be a friend but the last few years have been very worrying. Your commentary is reassuring that Americans are still brave enough to reflect and stand up for what is right. Long live Rock and Roll.
Do more reactions on Slipknot! Your reactions are actually "reactions". Some suggestions would be Nameless, AOV, Devil in I, Spit It Out, Duality, Sulfur, Blister Exists, Unsainted etc...
With metal the “noise” is the emotion, the anger, the fed up with the bullshit…but also how we metal heads won’t take it lying down. As others have said Stone Sour showcases Corey’s vocal talent. One of the few that can belt out guttural anger and then turn to a soft melodic voice. “Through glass” is a great song if you want to give it a listen.
It took some time to find my footing with Slipknot … but what a live show … while Stone Sour is my Corey Taylor vehicle of choice(especially for fits of karaoke) …There is so much talent to unwrap … something for future us to deep dive into with new found perspectives of hindsight!
Im a Huge Slipknot fan but been subscribed to you for ages as im also a huge Maiden & Metallica fan! Great Slipknot songs to start off with, Duality, The Devil In I, Killpop, Before I Forget, Dead Memories, Snuff and Circle will show you how diverse their music can be 🤘🤘
Ahaha! I got the biggest smile on my face seeing a Classical Music Composer breakout in a headbang. I was certainly not expecting that. It's honestly great watching your videos and seeing how you are open to many different genres, appreciating the music, and enjoying it!
Hi! As a composer, I would say, when I heard this song, at my prime (20 and such) in the start, we all had some anger problems about the emptiness in society, you know, from the writers perspective. Veganismi and all that. This right here fills the spot. If x marks the spot, then this here, is something we all do. Some good memories around the early, I don't mind. As a old slipknot style fan, frozen 2003, you get you chances to replenish. I didn't, well, hurt myself so bad, if you know where I'm coming from. It's so personal, when you think about melodies and lyrics, at any given moment. The quality, is what keeps us coming back. No harm in, being one of the best songs in metal history. Ty Corey, for bringing this to the world.
I love you and your musical knowledge sir! You have such a graceful way of explaining music theory. Please never stop so that you may review bands like Deftones, Queens of the stone age, and The Mars Volta. These 3 bands will make you look at Nu metal with more of a deep understanding of where we are as a cultural. They're all unique in They're on way. Dive deep sir I'll be waiting with bated breath for any of these 3 bands thx bud
I laughed when you said the guy with the spikes on his head was going to have a headache. I seen them live here in Las Vegas this year. The amazing thing is they all head bang though each and every song. The dude with the spikes had the spikes going through every single song. They played over an hour. It was an amazing concert.
Mostly played in Drop B, some of the heavier stuff in Drop A This is almost 'pop' Slipknot (a bit more commercial) - early stuff is very heavy and a little disturbing lyrically ha! Their best stuff) Middle period is decent but lighter Paul Gray sadly died of OD, Joey Jordisson left/was fired (he sadly died in July 2021) Band returned to form with the last album We Are Not Your Kind in 2019, was heavy and dark again. Enjoy the rabbithole.
Even Slipknot has some very melodic songs. Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses) one of my favorite albums, has 3 of my favorite "soft-songs" from them: Prelude, Vermillion Pt.2 and Circle... they're really great songs, and the rest of the album is full of banger Metal songs (Duality, Three Nil, The Blister Exists, Pulse of the Maggots, Before i Forget, Nameless)
The masks and uniforms are excellent stagecraft, it is a gimmick in the rock music sense, but they work not only for presentation to the audience but for the musicians, that alter-ego stage persona can assist a performer really sink into and assume a different role. Saw these guys live during their "Iowa" album tour, wasn't a huge fan at the time but witnessing their stage presentation I realized the brilliance of their "Schtick", they really belong to it and they deliver live for the audience, it was an epic live performance with 9 guys on stage. Thier "gimmick" got them notoriety and got them the hell out of go-nowhere, middle of who cares Iowa, brilliant!
I suggest you listen to "Eyeless" from their first album. You can hear how they changed to a more mainstream pop sound in this. Eyeless embodies what made them so popular to begin with and is pure adrenal and emotion.
love the breakdown, my fave band of all time, my dad was a classical organist, so respect the f outta ya man! props also "the preservation of the martyr in me" (in my opinion) means he is still ready to die for what he believes in, and still wants to believe in something and does, but the world and social constructs have left him broken and hateful, hence the rest of the song. thats my take
Doug, in the last few videos of yours I've watched you've given some really great insight into the bands, their music, and motivations, and how they relate to larger issues. That's why I love your reactions. Thank you
You said you’d rather hear them sing like they sing on the choruses the entire time. Let me offer this: You (and I, as well as most listeners) wouldn’t appreciate how beautiful the chorus is without the hate surrounding it! Great vid you made here!!! Kudos!
would love to hear you comment on any song by Blotted Science's 'The Machinations of Dementia'. They play Instrumental tech metal but they wrote music using the 12 tone system. pretty complex, both musically as rhythmically. The Guitar Player Ron Jarzombek is amazing.
Blotted Science also wrote a lot of songs to fit with different video clips and it’s pretty interesting. For example they have a song called Cretaceous chasm where it’s written to the scene in King Kong where the giant insects come and start causing havoc haha.
this indistinguishable sound in those frequencies that we can't decipher the pitch is kind of what i really like in metal as a musician. I really enjoy this sensation when the sound remembers me like heavy industry, metal noises, steel and iron being hit by a hammer.
Love the heaviness of this song! The ADHD riffs and Corey Taylor's vocals are just amazing. The unpredictability makes this song so great. It's a banger alright. Wow!
One of the most satisfying things for me to watch is classical composers reacting to metal. It is like damn they finally get what we are talking about.
I'm watching the video now. There is a key change in the chorus. End of the video: great reaction, Doug. I really like your channel. You really give me hope.
It's always awesome to see someone dip their toe into metal and like it metal is everyone. Only if people would give it a shot they wouldn't be let down
Thank you for welcoming us (on particular Slipknot fans call themselves "Maggots") and thank you for bringing me to your channel. I always appreciate openminded people and was curious on your take and point of view. Being from Nebraska and studying music, I´m surprised you have never heard about them earlier, as Joey Jordison is considered being one of the best drummers of all times (if not the best). Thank you and have a good day. Kind Regards, Kristyna from Czech Republic. 🤘
Doug ALL metal music is cathartic therapy for the repressed feelings of sadness, anger, hopelessness, abuses of childhood, abuses of society, etc. This is the very reason why metalheads will be some of the nicest people you will ever meet, because they have daily therapy and an outlet for what other people keep repressed and let tear them up inside whether they know it or not. Metalheads are a brotherhood (and sisterhood). When one metalhead sees another there is an instant level of respect granted because we share a level of enlightenment about the human condition that many others ignore to their detriment. We don't fear negative emotions, we embrace them in a controlled fashion so they don't control us. Understand that growling and yelling vocals are better matched to negative emotions than melodic ones are, it's good to see that you are starting to figure that out. The great thing about vocalists like Corey is the duality in their vocals. Aggressive vocals are a release for the soul, while the melodic vocals are soothing for the soul, both have a useful purpose in a metalhead's musical therapy. Enjoy your continued discoveries of a musical genre far more complicated and deeper than it's given credit by outsiders. If I were to make a suggestion for your next Slipknot song, I would suggest "Unsainted". That song is about the indoctrination of children into religion and about the plight of a child who chooses to break free from that world and go their own way. Not only is the song well written, but it carries a personal meaning as it parallels my experiences as one of those children.
If you find yourself digging into the Knot, I implore you to find some of the deeper cuts. The slow moody stuff. It will send a shiver down your spine.
A great song to start on a truly unique band, Doug - being also one of the pieces in the soundtrack of the second Punisher movie, if i recall correctly. However, i'm even more curious about your reaction on "Vermillion" and it's true masterpiece of a video-clip. Vermillion is by far their best creation, in my opinion. Another enlightening and fun reaction video - keep up the great work! :)
Glad you got this one unblocked! I’m a latecomer to Slipknot myself, but I’ve known about them for years. If you want an example of a “clean” sung song, “Snuff” is a good example. “Killpop” is kind of a sludge…but I think my favorite lyrically is “All Out Life” and its condemnation of throwaway pop music, among other topics. Slipknot is not for everyone…hell, I don’t even like some of their stuff, but there are some solid tunes in their catalog. Now that you’ve done Slipknot, let’s throw in some Mushroomhead! “Seen It All” would be a good intro…but for a really fun one, “QWERTY” is the only way to go.

They are coming to Australia next year and I'm so excited but I'm so sad I'll never get to see joey preform live on the drums he was so talented
I don't care if this is "too mainstream" it's a great song and I'll listen to it no matter what
NO MATTER WHAT.
I'm a Jazz cat at heart, and I love Orchestral music; I will always have a soft spot for Metal.
I saw them live back in October, and the catharsis was so healing. What an incredible show!
It took some time to find my footing with Slipknot … but what a live show … while Stone Sour is my Corey Taylor vehicle of choice(especially for fits of karaoke) …There is so much talent to unwrap … something for future us to deep dive into with new found perspectives of hindsight!
Doug you should see if you can go see them live. They are so amazing!
All Hope is Gone came out while I was just starting high school and quite honestly helped me find out who I wanted to be and still am to this day.
6:38 Dancebrake called Breakdown in Metal-Music
Me too. But 1987, Graduated from Blair. Did shows with in early 90's around Midwest. They are my brothers in arms. RIP JOEY and PAUL.
I laughed when you said the guy with the spikes on his head was going to have a headache. I seen them live here in Las Vegas this year. The amazing thing is they all head bang though each and every song. The dude with the spikes had the spikes going through every single song. They played over an hour. It was an amazing concert.
More slipknot please. I love hearing your pov on my favorite bands. I like when people take the time to notice how beautiful music is.
Mostly played in Drop B, some of the heavier stuff in Drop A
This is almost 'pop' Slipknot (a bit more commercial) - early stuff is very heavy and a little disturbing lyrically ha! Their best stuff)
Middle period is decent but lighter
Paul Gray sadly died of OD, Joey Jordisson left/was fired (he sadly died in July 2021)
Band returned to form with the last album We Are Not Your Kind in 2019, was heavy and dark again.
Enjoy the rabbithole.
He´s not trying to figure out the tuning of the guitars, He´s trying to find the key of the song. Two different things.
"It has more musicality to it"...... but the other has more power and...the art...is just more amazing
Very cool, honest and open minded perspective. Great video!
YOU SHOULD DEFINETLY DO COREY TAYLOR - SNUFF LIVE ACOUSTIC
ONE OF THE GREATEST
I suggest you listen to "Eyeless" from their first album. You can hear how they changed to a more mainstream pop sound in this. Eyeless embodies what made them so popular to begin with and is pure adrenal and emotion.
i went to see slipknot live last month and they were so awesome this is one of my favorite songs from them and i was so glad they played it
I appreciated the understanding and philosophy you tied in with the video!
love the breakdown, my fave band of all time, my dad was a classical organist, so respect the f outta ya man! props
also "the preservation of the martyr in me" (in my opinion) means he is still ready to die for what he believes in, and still wants to believe in something and does, but the world and social constructs have left him broken and hateful, hence the rest of the song. thats my take
Doug, in the last few videos of yours I've watched you've given some really great insight into the bands, their music, and motivations, and how they relate to larger issues. That's why I love your reactions. Thank you
Metal is marvelous when it finds notes that you wouldn’t think belong, but they do.
When he started headbanging, I know he is on our side xD
Happy days! Glad I checked again
You said you’d rather hear them sing like they sing on the choruses the entire time.
Let me offer this:
You (and I, as well as most listeners) wouldn’t appreciate how beautiful the chorus is without the hate surrounding it!
Great vid you made here!!! Kudos!
Acabo de conocer tu canal justamente porque soy un fanático de Slipknot, me encanto tu análisis y me hiciste reír, saludos desde Argentina!
doug you’re a badass. thanks for doing this one
would love to hear you comment on any song by Blotted Science's 'The Machinations of Dementia'. They play Instrumental tech metal but they wrote music using the 12 tone system. pretty complex, both musically as rhythmically. The Guitar Player Ron Jarzombek is amazing.
Hope Doug hear you!!!... recommended him same band time ago... also some Spastic ink or Spiral Architect music... crazy stuff and complex as hell...
Blotted Science also wrote a lot of songs to fit with different video clips and it’s pretty interesting. For example they have a song called Cretaceous chasm where it’s written to the scene in King Kong where the giant insects come and start causing havoc haha.
The "musicality" you prefer in conjunction with the raw power in his growls are what make Slipknot insanely good.
this indistinguishable sound in those frequencies that we can't decipher the pitch is kind of what i really like in metal as a musician.
Wow!
Metal has made my depression go away and my productivity go up for the last 30 years.
I love when people's first time seeing slipknot is with phycosocial, because the singing part always catches them out
One of the most satisfying things for me to watch is classical composers reacting to metal. It is like damn they finally get what we are talking about.
I'm watching the video now. There is a key change in the chorus.
End of the video: great reaction, Doug. I really like your channel. You really give me hope.
It’s amazing to hear your analysis of these songs.
Doug - How can you NOT have heard of them?? They're only a 150 miles from you - and have played numerous times in Omaha!! Love the dive!
It's always awesome to see someone dip their toe into metal and like it metal is everyone. Only if people would give it a shot they wouldn't be let down
Yo greetings from Croatia I love your metal mondays and disecting of the songs...Love your mental proces and a fan of your work...keep it up..:)
Good to see different genres, and songs like this have huge views show this style of music or most others are never dead if it's high quality.
Thank you for actually learning who the artist is before listening.
Deeply appreciated.
Love slipknot and love your personality, great video 😁
Not only is the song well written, but it carries a personal meaning as it parallels my experiences as one of those children.
i dont think ive ever seen someone look so much into the artist/band and music before listening, great reaction!
Interesting to hear your take on the song and your subsequent thoughts and opinions. Very well put. Great video.
Isnt their music so well mixed and harmonic for so many members? It makes the sound more powerful and forceful. I love Slipknot, theyre *chefs kisses*
It's great this video got uploaded. Good to see you got it past the copyrighters.
Kudos for acknowledging Hetfield opening up!
