I've never understood that take, I can use my eyes and can track things for longer than 60 seconds to know that NIS/A isn't in hot shape, and PB is a gem that is extremely hard to polish. Lost Hero has some big shoes to fill, and had a rough reveal with the 3D models and performance issues out the gate. If you're not at least wary, you'd probably accept any slop as long as you recognise the characters.

I've had my eye on Refrain but never actually picked it up. I might have to change that.
They probably think they can't go hard with Disgaea because it's the "so funny" game, but a good Disgaea story would take people by surprise, it'd be a welcome addition. I miss the earnest nature of the earlier games, which also had their fair share of whimsy.

Personally, I can't think of a single Disgaea game I straight up dislike though Disgaea 6 came close and only got salvaged by me loving the characters. Especially zed and melodia. I've replayed 3 on the vita recently and it was a really fun time. Though my favorites will always be Disgaea 1, Disgaea 4 and disgaea dimension 2.
As for phantom brave, I have the first game on my PSVita and on switch. You don't need to convince me about that game anymore.
For phantom brave 2, they could have Ash and Marona as mentor figures for the new character. That could be interesting.
My biggest gripe with Nippon ichi nowadays is their willingness to release straight up unfinished products nowadays. Every single volume of the prinny presents collection on switch requires a big patch to fix major bugs, and in the case of soul nomad that fix was unfinished still because to this day there's at least two cutscenes that crash the game unless you skip them.

    • @Caspicum

I got tagged with those cutscenes and various other crashes, and waited for the fix. Still waiting. I ended up getting it gifted to me on Steam but the wounds were still raw. Modern NIS/A unironically ruined their past works for me.

As an OG, I was actually pretty stoked when I watched the Direct and The Lost Hero popped up. Does Phantom Brave need a sequel? Of course not. Is The Lost Hero going to be able to capture the original's charm and earnestness? I'm going to say no, not after 20 years. But, honestly, I'm not complaining!
With NIS' financial woes, the under performance of their latest releases, and the loss of the Labyrinth games creator, it's clear that NIS is in dire straits and it feels like, to me, that they're probably banking on reviving the Phantom Brave IP as a nostalgia play and to test the waters to see whether they can make it another consistent pillar in their repertoire similar to the Disgaea series. Personally, I hope it works and that we get more PB games because I've always loved Ivoire as a setting, and PB is one of NIS' most mechanically stacked games and I'd like to see them iterate on its mechanics to see how far it can go.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Месяц назад +1

I don't disagree, if any series deserves some sort of continuation, Phantom Brave is up there. Imagine having such a crazy unique system and only ever using it once when we're 8 Disgaea games deep. Even Makai Kingdom changed it to the point where it lost a lot of the charm. It's always existed as this nugget of (near) perfection amid a sea of slop. But now that there's more of it, the nuggets gonna start leaking. Is Phantom Brave still special if they're just gonna use it to crank more games out?
They'd better not screw this up, I swear.

I feel like Nippon Ichi bottled lightning with Disgaea 1 but never really understood how or why the formula worked. There have been various tweeks with some level of success per game but it always feel like for one thing they"fix" another thing gets broken. The biggest issue is that you can have a well balanced strategy game or you can have huge numbers but they keep trying to do both.
That said I'm cautiously optomistic about this sequel.

If only more studios were brave enough to do this.
...By which I mean making spiritual successors rather than sequels. I don't necessarily want every game studio to make up stories about a guy turning into a book and yelling.
...Although if they did, it would be a fascinating way to compare their different approaches to the same basic prompt.

I wondered this for a while since it's the only numbered Disgaea game that wasn't ported to PC and the only concrete answer I was able to find was a controversy involving one of the voice actors (though that on its own seems like not enough of a reason to not port the game).

Also, for what it's worth, a good rule of thumb is that performance issues in a trailer is _generally_ a good thing - moreso with AAA games though. It's an indication that the trailer is an accurate reflection of the current state of the game - which is to say, unfinished. If a trailer is filled with faked gameplay, they aren't going to fake performance issues.

I loved Disgaea 1,2, and 4. Disgaea 3 and d2 were serviceable, but Disgaea 5 was really worrisome for me. They “streamlined” a lot of mechanics that took time in the original, but were entirely optional for the late/post game and on top of that made them basically required for post game grinding, so it just felt like fluff. They made hard but rewarding mechanics, easy but required so it’s just another layer of slog I have to wade through, instead of an investment. Not to mention the whole class mechanics that made characters less unique than ever. Also the cheat system is just too convenient. It makes grinding way too easy and I always end up over leveling for the next few chapters. They shouldn’t let you customize enemy levels from the bat. Plus one of my favorite mechanics in the earlier games, capturing monsters, has been made completely obsolete. In the first few games you could capture like any monster even if they were a higher level than you, but not only are you limited there, you can create and customize characters any way you please at whatever level you please up to your characters level. It’s ludicrous. I don’t like that mechanic. I like building a character from scratch and capturing was always the alternative that you could engage with that had its own ups in downs. Also, I hear a lot of people saying that monster units weren’t viable enough in the earlier games, but they didn’t need to be. (Taro from Disgaea 2 is OP though) it gave some variety that there were these distinct units with distinct traits like, monsters being the only ones you could capture or in dark hero and Disgaea 4 there being magi-change and fusion.
I could go into detail about the streamlined mechanics in Disgaea 5 that disappointed me so, but I’ll leave that rant where it is for now. Anyways, when I was not looking foewards to Disgaea 6 after that because I knew that once a game streamlined things they didn’t go back. All they saw was the convenience and paid no heed to the balancing act of mechanics or the purpose behind making people work to achieve certain things. Then when I saw the trailer and the focus was “bigger numbers” I knew it was gonna be a disappointment. Then when I played it and after beating the first level all of my characters jumped like 20 levels immediately I knew that I wasn’t gonna feel a single thing when a character leveled up anymore. I think they withheld experience until you beat the level because if they didn’t you would be inundated with level up notifications every time you did a single thing. It’s ludicrous. I barely remember any of the levels because I just plowed through them with like no thought. By the time you beat the main game your expected to reach reach higher levels than in any previous game. The balanced pacing to around level 100 by the final boss of all the other games was decimated. Now they have arbitrary level caps that you have to grind arbitrary mechanics to unlock so you can grind to even further arbitrary numbers. Some people loved it, but all of the roadblocks they put in your way just felt like a bandaid for broken, poorly tuned progression. I haven’t played disgaea 7 yet. I heard they backtracked a bit and I really hope it’s as fun as some people are painting it to be. The comparisons to 5 as a return to form aren’t seeking me on it though.
Anyways I see where your coming from when you say your skeptical of a sequel. I really hope none of that bleeds through into this franchise. I hope that since this game is only derivative of the first game they won’t upend the formula too much.
Man, I rant so much. It does help me to think though. Like I had forgotten about how Disgaea 6 had that weird unlock mechanic with capstones to halt your grinding progress. It never even occurred to me why that was until my mess of a thought process blurted it out stream of consciousness style.
Anyways, I feel kind of isolated when I look online and see the universal praise for Disgaea 5 when that was the turning point for me and all of the things I didn’t like about 6 began with 5.

Honestly, this once brings into the discussion how much a completed story needs a direct sequel.
For all intent and purposes, Makai kingdom was Phantom brave sequel in all but story.
In an age of remakes and sequels releasing 10+ years after the original I have to wonder if so many are necessary.
For example. I adore the spyro trilogy, but I also recognize there are a ton of games released after it that captures the same gameplay ideas and mechanics better, one being the first two ratchet and clank games.
The series itself said all it wanted to say, and the OG trilogy left off on a high, if a bit shakey note.
Contrast to Ratchet and Clank itself, where the series probably should have ended 3 times over, yet it continues having nothing new to add to the gameplay or ideas of the story. Being happy being reheated leftovers of the series past
I'd be more excited if the series stared a completely new character/cast with only slight ref or mentions to the original. But having it as a direct one seems odd.
Though I'll keep an eye on it, can't say I'm too excited about announcement.

It seems like everyone's begging for this stuff, which doesn't help. I've been wanting to make a video on how much I loathe the 2D-HD style, the newest form of visual slop that looks like garbage, but outside of looking at two clashing styles and thinking "Man that looks horrible" I can't really turn that into a video. The Dragon Quest 3 2DHD remake genuinely looks like something an amateur would've made in Unity 10 years ago as a school project, but people see washed out rudimentary 3D assets with clashing sprites obscured in excess bloom and applaud like seals.
The Spyro remake was okay, like, it did the job, but so much of the original charm was removed in favour of weird furry designs. It was cool to see, and I'd say one of the best remakes by far, but did it accurately capture the original's vibe? At least with Crash you can say it plays fundamentally differently and suffers as a result, but Spyro seems perfect at a glance, and still didn't quite nail it.
Maybe we're the problem, having standards and all that.

    • @Just.Kidding
      @Just.Kidding Месяц назад

The really depressing part is that as bad as needless sequels/reboots can get, remakes (I include remasters in that) are even worse. Hell, we thought it was bad when companies were too scared to make original works, but most companies are now too cowardly to even release _sequels._ Just endless, needless remakes ranging from bad to legitimately offensive, all of which sap potential players from the originals, achieving the opposite effect of what people wanted them to. It's not by accident, either. They don't make as much money from the old originals, _so they don't want you playing them._ They want you to be nostalgic for the new, _shiny_ versions.
Some companies -(coughsquarefuckingenixcough)- are so desperate for people to not at _least_ get by without playing a 4K ULTRA HD UPSCALED HI RES - UGLY ASS ATMOSPHERE-DESTROYING- "PORT"... they legitimately seem to be straight up *ashamed* of their originals. They'll go to absurd lengths to put out quick, cheap, garbage remasters so that people who don't know any better (or are stockholm syndromed into thinking remakes/remasters are a good thing) think they're getting some upgraded version. That's why they use terms like "definitive edition" (as if anything but the original could be definitive) to hide the fact that they're just inferior, but more expensive knock-offs.

Really no freaking idea what the sequel would be about.
If anything I could see them doing a sequel with a new set of characters set X years after.
Maybe have a new girl with a similar power having idolized the old team and trying to become famous, but having to understand the difference between chasing fame and doing good things because they are the right thing to do.
Maybe even have the phantom with her have a bit of conflict as the new one defends the new girl because he gets to 'continue living' due to her rather than be stuck as a phantom watching things pass by without being able to interact with anything.
You get the phantom learning how to live for more than just their own sake.
Sort of like... Disgea 1 moving to the second one where you can reference and show the original group, but the new characters have their own story.
Reusing the old characters just males me question what can be done with them and how badly they might mess it up.

I hate takes like this. “I have an emotional connection to an old game, therefore it should never get a sequel because it’d ruin the series by being… new”. Also causes people like this to just kinda forget what the older games were actually like. You complain about “dank memes” or whatever and seem to have forgotten that Disgaea has always had a juvenile sense of humor. Most well known joke from Disgaea 1 is “horse wiener” for crying out loud.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  14 дней назад +1

Juvenile jokes don't automatically equate to dank memes. The fact that the horse wiener joke from Disgaea is so well-remembered is that it was an outlier in an otherwise *fairly* tame game. It goes off the rails a bit when Gordon and Jennifer appear, but it's largely leaning on simple anime tropes. If they did that zombie scene in a modern Disgaea, every piece of that zombie would have some quirky thing about it, and it'd be horribly unfunny and predictable.
Also I didn't say it'd ruin the series by being new, I said it'd ruin it by being bad. New is bad in 99.9% of cases, but some new things are good sometimes. The less warranted they are, the heavier the boulder becomes, tougher to get to the top of the pile. You never have to forget what the older games were like because they'll always be there. I'm sick of things being a constant when there's no need. Why can't a series be a one-and-done?

It's pretty weird to frame a sequel that came after some 20 years as some kind of brainless cashgrab, as if NIS themselves don't handle Phantom Brave with a lot of care. There have been talks of NIS wanting to do a PB sequel for YEARS in fact if you go off of JP interviews from the company, and going "uhh it wont good because current year politics" is such a brainless take, as if NIS has ever been influenced by any outside force and haven't just done whatever they've felt like without regards for revenue or mass appeal (as shown by some of their much more niche titles like Penny Punching Princess or Monster Menu). If you don't believe me, look up the interview with Sohei Niikawa on "the road most niche."
I also hate that clip of cherrypicking something silly from D6 out of context as if the game being non-serious in the first chapter (that line is literally from the intro cutscene) makes it bad. You realize the Disgaea series has been knee deep in cracking jokes since the first game, right? Disgaea 5's biggest issue was playing it too straight, and even then there are still things to like about that game, especially from the gameplay standpoint where D5 might be the most accessible and yet technical title in the series (arguably), and on that front, PB2's gameplay completely retained, with them even adding vehicles for you to confine your Phantoms into, something taken right from Makai Kingdom, giving us the best of both games. Even Disgaea 6, which was a gameplay nightmare, had a serviceable story--and even if you do still hate it, NIS pretty much bent over backwards to undo everything 6 brought to the series minus 3D.
Lastly, no game *needs* a sequel (even Disgaea 1 was a complete story by itself), but there was 100% room for one in Phantom Brave. Even if Marona's personal character arc has concluded, threads of plotlines that could create something great are still there, case in point a lot of (spoilers btw) Marona's post P.B. appearances in Makai Kingdom and Disgaea 3 have her and Castile looking for Walnut, who vanished into Soul Nomad at the end of the game. Castile's ailments were healed at the end of PB1, and I'd like to see what work she does as a Chroma. Ash took a backseat near the end of the first game and I'd love to see him get more focus and development, ect.
tl;dr I can emphasize with the feeling of apprehension for a sequel to a beloved title but this video does a horrible job of doing anything but fearmonger using bad faith representations of other NIS titles and a total lack of understanding as to why NIS even makes games in the first place. Do better.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Месяц назад +1

I never said brainless cash grab, but I did certainly imply it was a cash grab of sorts. It's not that I think they're thoughtless, it's that I think they're incapable, and I used the modern state of Disgaea writing to permeate that narrative. Was it a bunch of out of context clips? Sure. Were they particularly egregious? Absolutely. But when you crank a couple of those out in almost every cutscene in the game, cringe-worthy writing and stilted voice acting, I don't think I'm misrepresenting the series at all. The reason I use early-game clips is two fold: 1. It's easier to capture, I don't like to borrow footage, and 2. Nobody is unnecessarily spoiled if they do actually care about the Disgaea story. Believe it or not, my 8-minute video on my concerns regarding a game that isn't Disgaea, isn't exactly a deep-dive on Disgaea's writing or narrative structure. The first title certainly did have jokes, which is one of the reasons it stood out, but with any beloved trait, which was a smaller part of a larger experience, it eventually become the entire narrative show. Most would agree that Disgaea starts when the credits roll, but the first title had an authentic narrative that stood on its own merit. The characters were consistent, and didn't cast that aside for an unfunny anime gag. They didn't have a single personality trait and only say the exact thing you expected them to say every line, and the conclusion of the story showed emotional character growth in a demographic that isn't known for it. "Demons could be here", he thought.
By comparison, Disgaea 5 was shooting each other, padded edgy brooding, and each of its characters served exactly one purpose with no growth. It had no internal consistency, the characters sucked, and the narrative was 15 chapters too long. Honestly, you're probably right about Disgaea 5, it did take itself too seriously most of the time, but taking yourself seriously only works if you've got a solid plot to fall back on, and unfortunately for Disgaea 5, the best it could do was curry and everyone magically coming back to life all the time.
You're right in that NIS don't chase revenue or mass appeal, their only name-brand series only has what, 2 games? It's definitely not 8 core titles, countless ports and freemium mobile crap, one of which, is already a questionable sequel that only stands firm due to its gameplay and not all the other baggage it introduced. That's like saying Square-Enix aren't profit-driven exploitative monsters because they released a couple of farm games. Surely if both of these companies thought things weren't going to sell well, they wouldn't do it, which further incentivises a sure-bet. Too much is at stake, I get it, but let's not pretend NIS aren't just a company, even if some of their higher-ups have good takes on passion projects.
Which I guess leads into "uhhh it wont be good because current year politics" which isn't something I actually said. I said the state of modern writing, writing in general in current year. Sure, modern writing is rife with unnecessary political garbage, you implicitly agree based on the fact that you misinterpreted what I said, but that's not the only reason I hate it, and is honestly a smaller reason. I hate spite writing... Spiting. Everyone does it for all political, social, and god knows what other motivations. It makes people smug, complacent, and always leads to horrible writing regardless of who is doing it. If you're creating something and go out of your way to spite-write, you've already failed. Took me a long time to realise it, and I was also guilty in the past, which I guess has made me hyper-aware of that kind of thing.
Outside of that, if we look at almost any modern vidya release, it just seems to polarise people. Is this a result of people being too ideologically or politically driven? Yeah, probably, but it feels like you can't do anything anymore without pissing some group off somewhere, and social media makes people think they matter, which they don't. If you wanna cook a story, it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks, just do it, and do it unapologetically to produce your most authentic works. Be authentic, not spiteful, and you'll be great. People are afraid to be authentic now, in fears they'll be knocked down and it'll cut deep, so a lot of writers, or just people in general, try the hyper-self-aware, sarcastic persona to front, and that also creates bad writing, and is highly ironic because focusing that hard on your outward appears is rarely introspective, so in trying to be self-aware, you're anything but. Honestly it creates bad behaviour in general, and translators aren't immune to this. I'm also worried that with NIS leaning into Disgaea so hard for so long, they've lost the art of an authentic story, which is one of Phantom Brave's true strengths.
A narrative that focuses on a girl and closes on the same girl's arc having fully resolved. I agree there's loose threads in PB, but it doesn't matter what happened to Walnut, whether he's dead or his dice got dimensioned in another dimension, his act of sacrifice is what's important. Not everything needs closure, I like that even though it is technically addressed in other NIS games, it's not explicit in the original works, and it's implied that he perished. Does it matter if he didn't? Not really. We had his apex moment, he laser-focused on his own goals and was so cold, and turned that idea of himself around in a single action. He's a brave hero. Ash is a boring character without Marona as a vessel, anything you can do with him is inferior to her story and unnecessary, which is my whole point. You could continue it, but why would you? Ash exists to serve Marona, literally, and narratively. He's the most bland character you could write, as his only personality trait is "Get angry when people mean to little girl". which I feel like the player already does, so why is Ash even necessary?
To close, I refuse to do better when you demand less with a tl;dr. If your words have any merit, they should stand on their own. Have confidence! I appreciate the criticism that isn't accusatory, and I've enjoyed responding. Also sorry if it's a jumbled mess I tried to keep it concise but then my fingers kept going.

@@Caspicum I'm definitely noticing a trend of reductionism when it comes to how you view stories and characters, every stroke you can apply to a later or modern Disgaea title can be applied right back to Disgaea 1. People, I've noticed, tend to view D1 through very rose tinted glasses in regards to its narrative, and hold it up as the golden goose of NIS writing despite the game honestly being pretty middling when it comes to it's plot and honestly even a few characters, like Etna, who has almost nothing to do in the story after her coup episode and is resigned to the backseat making jokes and being a Laharl lore dispenser for Flonne, and has nothing else going on outside her diary, or Captain Gordon who is a walking parody and spends the vast majority of his screentime being the party buttmonkey, only really having anything meaningful to say at the tail end of his mini-arc with Kurtis.
I bring this up because you're one of many people who say the exact same thing when it comes to later Disgaea titles and their writing quality, which just tells me people either speedran the game, or turned their monitor off when the actual character development was happening. The best example of this is Disgaea 4, where there are a non zero amount of people who legitimately think Valvatorez is the just funny sardine man and has absolutely nothing else going on as a character despite him being the starting point for the growth of every other member of the cast as well as having a unique view on the roles of demons and their relationship with humans and the rest of the universe which manifests into an entire demon philosophy that he talks about at length in his own DLC.
I say ALL OF THAT to say that claiming modern Disgaea titles are just lmao prinny, lmao sardine, etc is just flat out wrong. Disgaea 5...sucked, worst antagonist in the franchise, has some of my most hated characters in the series, narrative that is just a mess and trips over itself with its own lore, and even THAT game still has merit in regards to it's "Tales Of" like base conversations making the main cast actually have their relationship develop from people just putting up with one another for their common goal, to actual friends and comrades, something not even the beloved Disgaea 1 can claim. Whether you liked Disgaea 5 or not (no one did lol) the fact is there WAS growth and there WAS development for the cast, it was just muddled over by the god awful plotline. If you can't even see that, and just say "uhh the story sucked, no one grew", how exactly can there even be a discussion? But you're right, this video isn't actually about Disgaea, the point I'm making is that if those are your viewpoints on Disgaea, then I fully expect they'll be the same for PB2 because Marona makes a pun about seafood more than once, regardless of how well PB2 is actually written. I would, without a hint of irony, earnestly suggest playing through some Disgaea titles again. Disgaea 3 is another one that sucks ass until the second playthrough where you actually get Mao's deal from the get-go and all his formerly annoying mannerisms fall into place to make him a sympathetic character lashing out through his layers of trauma, but I'm getting sidetracked.
While I did misspeak on NIS NOT being profit driven (they are, please read the interview I talked about), my point wasn't that NIS doesn't care about profits, my point was that NIS isn't trying to swing into mainstream, and never have at any point, which is a massive determent from any imagined political, or 'spite' writing. You talk a lot about spite writing, and go off about the state of the industry and social media and all that but...I just see someone who is very very jaded, and, fair. It's kind of hard not to be, especially if you make youtube videos of all things, but I would also say that kind of thinking is doing you a big disservice when it comes to looking at future titles, especially something like a Phantom Brave sequel.
You say that NIS has done irony for so long that they can't be authentic, but I would say they never actually STOPPED being authentic. They know exactly what they are, they know what their audience is, and they know what kind of stories they want to tell. Disgaea 2 is a story about Rozalin seeking the love and approval of her father, and in doing so, finds family of her own with Adell. Disgaea 7 is a story about a father learning to actually love his kid, while escaping the trappings of his own upbringing, with some help along the way. Even a game like Zettai Hero Project, a story so rife with jokes and parodies you'd think it was South Park, STILL keeps true to it's message of self love and improvement, and it's a very important game to me personally because of it.
A game can be dumb and wacky and silly and still be genuine, I would never call any Disgaea, or really any NIS title ironic, spiteful or anything of the sort, the games are ridiculous, and completely serious about how stupid they are, this has been true from Disgaea 1 to Disgaea 7, and yes, even the bad ones like Disgaea D2 and 5. The driving force behind every last one of these stories is love, be it for family, friends, or the world around them, and all of this applies right back to Phantom Brave. Just because Disgaea is more silly about it than its sister title doesn't make it any less true, and in turn goes right back to what I said in my initial post about bad faith representation about Disgaea, though now I realize you actually think the games are that shallow, which just makes me implore you to play the games again and really break them down.
Now to the actual subject matter, Phantom Brave, it breaks my heart that you would call Ash nothing more than "protect little girl grrr". I began another playthrough of Phantom Brave after the sequel announcement, and even though I'm only halfway, Ash is only right behind Marona when it comes to tragic characters, he's completely robbed of his own autonomy, unable to age, or even die really (well, pass on?), and the person he's charged to protect is reviled and abused BECAUSE of him and his state as a ghost (a state he's in because he died horribly from the last boss.) He isn't able to interact with the world the way everyone else can, and he can't have relationships outside of Marona because he's only able to 'exist' due to her powers. It's a horrible existence, but he's so dedicated to his cause that he doesn't have time to be sad over it, his self loathing only coming from the affect he has on Marona's inability to form connections. Like, as you said, he only exist to serve Marona. Wouldn't that SUCK if that was your actual (after)life?
What if the sequel played with that? What if Ash desired to pass on but couldn't, because he had to protect Marona, and was conflicted because of it? What if Marona has to let Ash go in the end? And that's just one possible train of thought, really. Honestly I can't even believe you typed something like 'why is Ash even necessary' without any irony. The Another Marona story shows EXACTLY why Ash is necessary and what would happen to a Marona without Ash, forced to grow up alone and fend for her self with zero guidance, turning out dejected and conniving, which exactly how Ash gets suckered into that child lover clip you showed (again, without proper context, woah!) as one of Carona's attempts to steal Ash from Marona to deal with her loneliness. I said before that you used reductionism when it came to stories, but now I might need to change that to a complete lack of understanding of the narrative in any of these games.
But I digress, the trailers show a small gallery of new characters from new islands you visit, it would be nice if the land of Ivoire (or wherever Marona is) is fleshed out and made to feel whole. A trapping of later Disgaea titles (especially 5 lmfao that game SUCKS) is that the Netherworld, something that would be an extremely interesting setting, just gets reduced to colorful backgrounds because you zip through them so quickly, something Disgaea 7 rectifies by having Hinomoto be such a fleshed out and lived in place that you feel compelled to revisit worlds and talk to the NPCs (another fun new feature in 7). PB2 having something along these lines, where Marona gains relationships and a rapport with the islands and their people would be a wonderful contrast to PB1 where she's fighting for scraps of acceptance for the entire game.
All of this is speaking in hypotheticals, but the fact that I could even come up with this many without trying too hard shows how much room there is for a PB sequel, just because the world of PB1 revolved around Marona doesn't mean things can't change, and clearly NIS realized this with them going forth on making a sequel in the first place, something they haven't done for any of their other one off SRPG titles, LONG after Phantom Brave was relevant.
To conclude, I think this video was made from a standpoint of nostalgia and bitterness, and now I have to ask if you actually read a game's story or just pressed the A button when the dialog box filled up to say things like Ash has a single personality trait. I said it before, but I will say again to please consider replaying NIS titles--all of them, before making such sweeping statements about the games you make videos over and claim to like. You're right to be apprehensive, I am too, but I feel like there's a big difference in why that may be. Anyways the tl;dr for the first post was for everyone else's benefit, I could honestly keep going but I'm not sure how long a youtube comment can actually be, lol...Thank you for giving me the chance to rave about NIS games, I should really make my own channel for this....

Much like game freak with pokemon, nippon ichi doesn't seem to understand what made original disgaea good. They double down on the silliness but modern disgaea is so excessively infantile I've trouble imagining even the most brainrottet of zoomers actually enjoying the story.
I don't think it's a problem to make a sequel to older nippon ichi titles per se, I just don't trust the people making it. Honestly Soul Nomad could really use one, that game was full of great ideas with terrible execution, I'd love somebody to give those systems another shot.

Eh, we'll see. I don't like the game's presentation so far, and I also don't think this needed a NARRATIVE sequel, but I'm totally fine with a GAMEPLAY sequel. If it sucks it sucks, if it doesn't maybe I'll pick it up. I'm not really invested in these NIS games anyway, at least not anymore.

It will happen and even if it sucks you will be told by “FANS” that you are just being a negative gate keeper. Of course that will change when the influencer those “FANS” get their whole identity from tells them it’s not good, then you’ll be allowed to say it’s bad……. Dreadful times man..

I have no idea why you put Disgaea d2 in such a high tier, cause to me d2 is EXACTLY what you complain about with Phantom Brave 2. Why did we need to go back to Disgaea 1 squad rather than just leave these characters alone? Why add some more dumb crap to their story and their world like "we decided that Laharl had a sister and Etna had a brother this whole time". Why did we need some shitty lore about Etna being too strong as a child and getting her power absorbed by an amulet that her brother had to later absorb or whatever the fuck. I always thought that she's powerful because she trained very hard, because she looked up to Krichevskoy and didn't want to fail him. IMO that's better than the crap they came up with in d2.
That game is just shitty in general. No memorable new characters, just slight edits of generic units (gargoyle with glasses, female armor knight with shorter hair). Dumb plot with barely any charm and wittiness of the early disgaea games, Krichevskoy's servents testing you over and over again, spending hundreds of hours in item world because defeating enemies there gives a slight boost to your stats. Fuck that game. Definitely the worst one of Disgaea games.
And fuck Disgaea 2 for making you reenter the item world over and over again till you get a mystery room that raises the item's level in order to max it out. Half of that game's playtime is spent restarting the game till you get that shit.

You're right about D2's story for sure, but nobody plays Disgaea for the story anymore. I just dug the end-game a lot, which is like 80% of your Disgaea play time.
I won't have you bad mouthing my Disgaea 2. You will hunt for all the treasure maps and you WILL play for thousands of hours doing so.

Though I love SRPGs Im not a big fan of NIS games. I often bounce of the tone, style, and humor of Disgaea or Unlosing Ranger for example. But Phantom Brave is one game I actually adored, just a really heavy story where the comic relief comes from the fact that you're still playing a NIS game and capable of doing funny things in combat. And I feel its really unique in that way for this studio that yeah I am really concerned they're gonna pop out something just like their other games.
