According to Corey, the song is about getting through depression. My take is that he's specifically talking to his disease and the version of himself that is in the darkest part of the depression spiral. The lyric that tells the tale of the song for me is "Reaching out for the hand of God but do you think you'd shake your own?" He's pointing out the absurdity of seeking help from a higher power when you won't help yourself. So, he's telling the depression and that version of himself "No, fuck you. I won't kill myself to feel better. I've come too far for that. I win."

Sounds like Richard hit the nail on the head about Corey’s push-back on religion. Seeking relief from depression can drive a person to look to religion, I suppose, but he’s finding that this would mean to kill (a part of) himself and ‘sink so low’.
I’m reading the “how dare you martyr me” like, if he were to commit suicide, he would detest it if it was said he died a religious man.
Likewise, I don’t think the moniker ‘saint’ is necessarily to mean more that a term of endearment used by religious folk for likeminded ‘innocent’ people, and he just doesn’t want to be associated with any of it. Lots of interesting parts to these lyrics, you could certainly go on about them, and like Judson says, I think we’re supposed to think about them.

Hey Richard, here's another Richard trying to reproduce from what i heard or read in Interviews over the Years when it comes to Slipknot Masks, why they're such a big deal. So i guess this is one for Judson. I remember that Corey mainly pointed out it was all about the "f*ck the industry" and how you judge me kind of attitude the band had back in the day, they were also pretty much secretly horror movie buffs aswell, so that might've played a factor. But it was mainly about gaining attention, so people would actually go and LISTEN to the music instead of judging them by their looks which for the band was completely meaningless. It was all about the sound and soul of the music. And the only way they wanted to represent their music was also by re-imagining and remembering their past traumas and fears in life. Because Slipknot was also always about Pain but how to also overcome it, the matter that you can only win against your traumas and fears is when you've faced them and accepted them, rather than trying to ignore them or fade them out. I know there's a circle of maggots out there who don't even recall this and always say it's not that deep or a big of a deal but that's wrong and clearly not the case when you dig deeper with the members personal journeys. I think Shawn was used to be afraid of Clowns or even once had an encounter with a bully who's worn a clown mask while being at school (I can't recall that precisely tho), but then he ended up deciding his mask to be a clown mask, and later on every other member joined with their masks. They all have personal connections to their masks, at least up to until Joey left at least. I don't really think it's still that personal once new members joined after Joey was out of the band. So you can equally say the masks are fundamental and deep, but in the same way they wanted to use it as a tool by gaining more attraction to people never having listened to them. Of course all of that was working perfectly, but that was clearly not what they were thinking when it started. It was truly about having a dark and freaky image because they were misfits or outcasts and it truly fit to the by-then never heard before anger and raw sound of the band. It was also a way of getting to be a different character, a different person on stage, an ageless character which could represent their emotions (their true selfs) rather than the "typical" shell what we see as just ordinary people. In a way they also tried to fool the people by looking like a "theatrical" gimmick Band when in reality their costumes were trying to represent their true identity and character. P.S. Yea that's truly Hours spent of reading and watching interviews over the years, it's a shame not every fan gets to know all of those. Shoutout to both of yours' great content and different approach to Music Reactions! ✌🏼

Judson's entitled to have his own opinions, but here's my take on the masks and why they're important: It's about how anybody can identify with the band. We know now who the people behind the masks are, but back in the 90's we had no clue who anybody was, so the masks made it so it could be anyone, even someone just like you, and it doesn't matter what it is that makes you different than everyone else and seen as an outcast because of it.

Now Slipknot has the best drummer in Metal, the Brazilian Eloy Casagrande (ex-Sepultura), an extraterrestrial, monster, absurd, no Metal drummer is as impressive as him, no other living legend comes close to Eloy, Tomas Haake (Meshuggah), which is impressive too, but doesn't come close to Eloy Casagrandre!!!

It's an umbrella genre in which you can fit all of these so called nu metal bands because of how distinct they sound and because of how hard it is to label them in any different existing subgenres of rock or metal.
So in conclusion: Slipknot has been always alternative metal to me when it comes to describing their music. But they where in the bracket of so called nu metal when it comes to an era when they became famous. Most of this stuff from them sounds lame because the chorus seems completely removed from anything else happening in the song. "Sarcastrophe" is their only newish song that works and doesn't have any of these misplaced melodies.

Hahahahahahahahah... aahhhhh £$%^%.. @19:05... "Sorry"... I'm so glad I rewatched this now.. lololol... THAT's INAPPROPRIATE!!! I totally missed that the 1st time.
Currently, when I hear let it go - I think of Frozen. 🙂 But yes, there was a time when letting it go, for me, was religion. I grew up in a dutch reformed house. Sunday morning church sucked. I never saw the point in it - still don't. And I was only able to accept that, when I was about 25 years old, it was a very lucid epiphany. I felt reborn. The feeling I always imagined having, when you receive the holy ghost - I got that warm and fuzzy feeling - like a sh!t ton of bricks off my shoulders when I was able to say I'm an atheist. Now, a bit older I consider myself agnostic.
Faith. It's illogical. It's the absence of science. And that's the issue with that. You can't use facts / science to prove a fact, when the core component of the arguement is that person's believe.
Post 25, this has been an ognoing conversation between my mom and me.. She's praying hard for me on a regular basis.. 🙂 And if that makes her happy, I'm happy. My step dad used to be a preacher in the dutch reformed church 2 or 3 dacades long. But he's MUCH more logical than my mom. He introduced me to the "God of Spinoza". Because I reminded him of that thought school.
I think I should get a diary.. but I'm currently finding it very therapeutic, typing my story here. I mean.. you're still reading this.
When I was young, before finally letting go, I was very concerned about a premature death.. but I also didn't believe in an afterlife. And this confused me, but somewhere in my mid 20's I found some bits and pieces of Epicurus' quotes on god and life.. and that gave me peace.
"when i'm alive - I am not dead. So death does not bother me. When I'm dead, I'll be dead - so death will not bother me" or somehting along those lines.. 🙂

The point of the masks changed over time. Clown decided to west his clown mask one day. Then the rest joined in. Then theu decided to have the mask tell its own story. Everyone has their own thing they do with their masks. Clown will go through an entire diatribe about the meaning behind each mask while Mick has worn basically the same type of mask from the beginning. I'd say wearing a mask allows you to inhabit the character the music is deacribing. Kind of like an actor wearing a mask. Nothing too deep about it all.

They had free will to do drugs and drink, but they found out why it's a bad idea. Some people can't afford help, they actively refused it. In fact, Paul stormed out of his last intervention and died in a hotel room very soon after. Please know what you're talking about before talking.

ABSOLUTE FACT. All Hope Is Gone is still the last Slipknot album that had real quality. “Gamatria (The Killing Name)”. 🤘🏻

The hell do you mean “they Let Joey and Paul die” clearly after Pauls death they stopped messing with drugs and really didn’t want to see the people around them suffer, the real reason they parted with Joey was because he was still struggling with substance abuse. How is that their fault? They are his friends not a rehab. Thats also why they parted ways with Chris. Clowns daughter made it clear that Chris was still struggling with substance abuse and they want no part of that in the band anymore. Saying they let their friends die is an insane thing to say.
