Box poster "Box v retru" simply means "box in retro"wich is a hall in Prague. Personally I preferred the black background wich refers to the Hall and show atmosphere. Boxing as a theater scene. Thanks for your show. always fresh and raw!

Thank you for letting us see how to develop different versions from the original poster . It gives me a better idea on how to not get stuck on a single idea by using the "S" pattern , resizing the same type and grouping or repeating certain graphic elements! Would love to see more critiques in the poster design series, especially on how to make posters minimal yet memorable .
love the content but I get bothered by Chris and his consistent belittlement of his workers in this video. I understand between getting straight to the point and being PC. It would be nice to see that everyone is comfortable and at ease in this video rather than seeing his workers struggling to speak in fear of upsetting Chris. Other than that this is a great channel with great content
I completely disagree. Aaron was being quite annoying, unprofessional, and disagreeable throughout this video. Chris did a great job in dealing with him - He maintained his cool, was straightforward, and was only a 2/10 dick when he had every right to be a 10/10 dick

That was great. Like the part when you made boxes as placeholders instead of using the letters in Helvetica, to highlight the composition and not get stuck on detail. Great tool. Also like how you explained how to tie elements together, with lines and with grids. It is good to be reminded of this. And that part at the end where u said it needed something lyrical or hand drawn.
I got a degree in graphic design and ended up becoming a "production artist" where i basically worked in photoshop all day editing product and photoshoot images for a soccer company. I liked it but the job didn't have any future path so i eventually left. My portfolio wasn't that good and i felt like a fish out of water. No web design skills,or UX or anything. Basic Indesign, Illustrator and PS like millions of others. Now i do small business marketing with my own little company. Found a marketing course advertised on youtube and went for it. But i still miss the creativity of g design and hope to offer those services as well. Absolutely love this youtube channel and can't wait to dive in! You are saving a lot of creatives out there who have no direction. There are tons of opportunities out there. Design t shirts and advertise on tik tok for free. Do some side hustles along with your main gig!
i´m happy that i find this video and your channel. here ist the story. I must design a poster for my class and my typo/layout skills are not this good. So i started to search for tutorials online and i found your channel and after this I started run the videos separate while i design the posters. And my prof know the posters befor and he don´t like it. At the end of my exam he was vere impressed. I´m happy that i improve my skills and want to thank you for posting that kind of videos.
The reason the poster design at 21:20 looks off balance is cause the original had the kerning reduced or/and is using the condensed version of Helvetica.
I was so tense watching this I felt like crying a couple of times. It's like the dude's cutting into my soul with his directness. It's excellent, and I'm learning, and it's not his fault, it's me who's weak.
I create auto/art deco posters and stumbled across this post. I loved it and learned so much. I found myself shouting ideas at the screen ( LOL ) and soaking it up. I totally understand what Chris is trying to do and disagree with the negative comments that I've seen below. I have subscribed and will be checking it out. May need to go back and make some changes to posters I've done, which are more of a composite genre than text based. Text has been my major weakness and am looking forward to learning more from this site. Thank you.

Dont really like what you did with the BOX one, but others improved a lot. The box one had its own dynamic with these strings and the poster just died and became one of these "design is my passion" posters that you see everywhere. I dont know how I`d solve it, but simplifying it to that point was too much I think. Otherwise - this vid is great, I really love this channel and adore both students and teachers!
I remember the day halfway through typography class where I could look at a billboard, poster, ad...etc... and no longer read it. I would see, appreciate and analyze the form first or only. Aaron Pierson makes a on-camera comment in your Typography Class 01 video "Cut it Out" about isn't all this stuff being intuitive. I'd agree but also having not focused on type for a long time everything Chris dissects in detail is confirming vague ideas, digging up forgotten ideas or new aha moments. : )

Chris, question about composing (time around 30:00 +-). I don't get the strictly S flow tendency. I saw for example nice gradual flow tendency with one out of order element, which gave it a dynamic touch in my opinion. Can you tell a bit more about what is behind your flow tendency thinking process. Why do you find it attractive and efficient?
if you study composition (film, painting, photography) you'll notice that subjects are placed on an "S" pattern vs. a line. it's the most dynamic way to compose elements.
I believe Chris is talking about having high and lows in the composition, just like in a story. There is no point in telling a story that follows a straight line. The highs and lows creates interest and action. However, just as you say, I am familiar with the Z pattern from the newspapers or the F pattern from websites. But if you think about it, the S pattern is very similar to the Z one. Same reasoning applies.
Very informative discussion. I didn't care for the solution of the Box Retru poster. I liked the original much better, I can see where it could us some refinement. Retru means retro in English.

Just to let you know guys, the boxing poster illustration has nothing wrong with it. The boxers are inside the ring, and they are in the corner. The ropes do extend outwards diagonally from the ring to a pillar/post from each corner. This is why they look as if they are in the wrong side of the boxing ring. Hope this clears some of the minor confusion!
Very inspiring video. What command was used at 1:18:44? He split the back into a grid, than the magic command and after that he was able to use it as a guide to snap his objects to.

What do you think of looking at your work on screen and print? I notice sometimes that a design that is so nice when you look at it on screen and doesn't work sometimes on a print. I don't know if it's just me.
Another quick way to check print layout work is to make a simple environment mockup. Take a clean pic of a wall and put the poster on it for a reference. Whatever you can do to pull the work into reality makes it much easier to make a decision on layouts.
Chris, Really like the content of your video, but no one will continue invest their 2 hours of time in one video, if you can make to the point and shorter video that would be great and more people will watch full video :)

Its Retro Music Hall, so --> 'BOX in Retro'. And you can convert text boxes into point text in the type menu.

What do you think of looking at your work on screen and print? I notice sometimes that a design that is so nice when you look at it on screen and doesn't work sometimes on a print. I don't know if it's just me.
if it's print design, you should print it out and check it.

Another quick way to check print layout work is to make a simple environment mockup. Take a clean pic of a wall and put the poster on it for a reference. Whatever you can do to pull the work into reality makes it much easier to make a decision on layouts.
I agree! I've been designing a lot of apparel recently and once it's printed generally I hate it lol

Chris, Really like the content of your video, but no one will continue invest their 2 hours of time in one video, if you can make to the point and shorter video that would be great and more people will watch full video :)
I know :) And you needed a break after it :) No, just kidding. This is the reason why I've found you. I'm still newbie in graphic design. I'll continue. And I have to say for my defense, also the main title was Gotham, but I forgot to ouline it. But it doesn't change anything on fact, your design was much more better :)
No more RAW Critique this year? It'd be really interesting to see an episode for a single poster adapted to different platforms, for example, one poster with lots of text and images adapted to social media post, cover photo, web banner, flyer and what not.
