Rosani Rodrigues I don’t think anything happened really. They did a song maybe a year or two ago for the most recent sonic racing game. I always heard it was just that the vocalist, who’s pushing 50? I wanna say just can’t sing like he used to. I don’t know if that’s the real reason or not.
Honestly as a kid Amy's section was a survival horror game that I was absolutely terrified of. I don't think he ever caught me but man were those chases filled with adrenaline!
SAME! I actually enjoyed it, in that I found it terrifying...! Especially that point in twinkle park with the mirror and the creepy music-box tunes.... !
Yeah, funny thing is that in her levels you can't just stop and breathe. The robot is also really annoying and it was always kinda satisfying to smash him with a hammer, especially from this high jump.
As a kid I was terrified by chaos, I remember waiting for weeks before even trying to fight the very first Chaos. And funny enough, I actually was also terrified by Zero following Amy everywhere, I remember stopping by safe rooms just to get some mental rest. Finally, I remember crying like a fucking baby when E-102 died, for some reason he was the reason I got into loving robotics and his death was a huge deal to me. Damn this game really made my childhood and I’m thankfull for that.
omg thank god i'm not the only one, i was SUCH a baby about Zero and Chaos. seeing them in this video honestly triggered something deep inside me, that fear is DEEP even today
It's sweet now that the Sonic Adventure fans have finally rised up and have defended the titles. Now the titles' fans have finished being pushed around and let their voices heard. Hopefully the message can get across that Sonic wasn't bad.
Seriously when I was a kid, when playing Sonic 3 and Sonic Heroes, I didn't even notice that Sonic didn't have green eyes in the Genesis games. Nor did I even consider there to be a "classic" anything. Because the term "classic sonic" hadn't even been invented yet throughout the fanbase. There was just Sonic. He had green eyes, he was cool, and that was it. There wasn't some huge fanbase debate about what makes Genesis Sonic and Dreamcast sonic different. I miss when there was just Sonic The Hedgehog and his many different games and adventures. Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2 in particular are some of my favorite games of all time, and I consider them to be the best Sonic games in the franchise. Sonic never deserves the constant hate that the internet gives him. Sonic himself is just extremely unlucky to be the one picked for constant ridicule. In another reality, Sonic is considered one of the greatest game franchises of all time by all gamers, and rightfully so.
I think there's a combination of different things, like Sonic being one of the most mainstream series of high-skill-ceiling-based games, one of the most mainstream IPs to feature anthropomorphic animals, as well as one of the most internationally-mainstream Japanese franchises in existence, that all just cause perceptions to bounce around in ways that just don't happen to its "colleagues" that might have one or two of these factors, like StarFox or Devil May Cry.
To me there's more of a difference between the Sonic in Black Knight & the Sonic in the 2010s decade. I'm sure that other reality where Sonic is considered 1 of the greatest game franchises of all time, the 2010s joke direction for the series never happened. Roger Craig Smith was a terrible fit for Sonic's English VA, & the duo of Pontac & Graff never should have been hired to write for the series to begin with. I remember Sonic was still a franchise that many took seriously in the late 2000s. I personally blame the critics who didn't understand the series for the changes that started throughout the 2nd half of what has been Sonic's career. The series had an excellent cast of characters & I remember Classic Fans wanting Mighty & Ray to return in response to Sonic Heroes bringing back Team Chaotix. Of course the critics like IGN would complain of there being too many characters & would convince Sonic Team that they were the reason 06 failed when really it was how severely rushed the game was onto hardware Sonic Team wasn't familiar with. Then once the Just Sonic mentality started the critics realized they could convince Sonic Team to make the series into a joke like most cartoon animal series. I only hate what Sonic became starting in 2010 with games like Sonic Colors. I miss getting awesome stories with Sonic actually being cool rather than the clown he's been since Colors & getting to play as other members of the excellent cast of characters the series has in the 3D Mainseries. Sonic only deserves the ridicule he gets now because of how badly he's been done for what is now 1/3rd of his career & some people are actually thinking that Sonic is supposed to be this way now.
Mayonnaiz - Sonic is a joke, because Sonic Team treats it as such. They only focus on ridiculous shit that will never sell well...not focusing on what’ll bring the series back. A Sonic Riders game that isn’t on a shitty motion camera device? Win. A Sonic Adventure remake for next gen consoles? Win. Sonic Heroes remake? Win. A Sonic game that is open world and not a boost game? Win. Sonic Team knows how to win, they just don’t want to win.
When you mentioned the slight differences in shared story cut scenes, it reminded me of a very nice addition where in Tails' story after Sonic runs off (I can't remember where in the story, they were in the Mystic Ruins around where they fight Knuckles) he says "he never listens to me" but in Sonic's story, that line is absent. Because of course Sonic wasn't listening
That would be in the Egg carrier, and sadly, it is heard in the Sonic story when the ship changes form, Tails is warning Sonic but Sonic is surprised by Eggman (i think) and Tails says "I hate it when he doesn't listen"
Technically, he's water because Sonic Team wanted to show off the rendering power of the DreamCast, much like with Big's gameplay, but that "internal logic" applies, too.
@Casswury Do you mean forced as in you have to go their to advance the plot or forced in just being present? Can't remember if you ever have to go their
Glad to see more people defending this game again. So many who have never played it but "Angry review man says it's bad and cancerous so I hate it too!"
Sonic Adventure is, even Sonic 06 is partially redeemable for me, for one reason and one reason only: The spotlight they gave and the work they put into each character, not just Sonic.
in sonic forces, as soon as sonic... ‘died’, all hell broke loose and eggman took over(?) it’s a staple in potaff’s (admittedly) wikipedia’d writing of sonic, where they seem to think he’s the only thing holding the world together. and to that i say that’s pure bastardisation and makes me question why they were hired
Sonic 06 (at least Sonic’s story in 06)is decent with all honesty but it was a major downgrade to Adventure just like how Forces is a downgrade to Generations
What's really sad about Gamma's death is when you realize that it possibly occurred mere moments before Amy fought in that same area with Zero, since he would have had to have died for her ending to be possible. It's worse in Sonic Battle when the gang sees a robot that looks exactly like Gamma which attacks them, leaving the gang confused and simply thinking, "That wasn't Gamma..."
Great review. The adventure games sure need all that positivity after suffering from a lot of unfair criticism. And I agree with your point: Sonic Adventure was the transition to 3D that Sonic needed and, judging from the standards of that time, it succeeded. I am actually flabbergasted that people actually argue that Sonic should have never transitioned to 3D... it's like saying that games don't need to innovate and should forever stick to the same formula.
It's weird, for the longest time I thought Sonic Adventure was a less-than-mediocre game from reading all the comments and such on different websites and forums, but even without an inherent bias from nostalgia for the game I still think SA is a pretty good one. Sure, it might be a bit misguided at points (*cough* Big *cough*) but damn it, it's still a pretty good Sonic game to me!
Big wasn't misguided at all at the time. SA was a big entry for Dreamcast, and they wanted to show off everything Dreamcast could do - and Dreamcast had A TON of fishing games. Them having a fishing mini game in what is basically a big demo for Dreamcast is completely understandable from that point of view.
@Trevor Anthony yeah, he's cool, but he's sentient because he's angry at Eggman for "wasting his potential." Gamma became sentient and rebelled because he learned emotions and what's right and wrong. He fought to liberate his siblings from Eggman.
@@IronianKnight I respect Omega's passion, but it's not the same. Times like this make me wish the comics were canon, because there, Gamma's conscience was uploaded into Omega, so they became one in the same.
48:45 Super Sonic was too fast to work well in the level design, so they decided to cut the feature. There is still a spoken line by Tikal detailing how to become Super Sonic in a level.
There are mods to restore that. It so broken... Besides, Super Sonic was a reward for completing extra challenge - Special Stage. In case of Colors and Lost World it was collecting red rings. No extra challenges, no reward for completing them.
@@Gnidel wrong on a point. In colors, you collect red rings to unlock the "sonic simulator" stages. and you can become super sonic only after having done all stages
Imo Amy's gameplay is fundamentally fun in the same way that Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles are since it's still fun just to move around the game world with the character, even if its particulars are undercooked.
Tbh I think the only reason Amy's levels are bad is because they're not designed to take advantage of the unique mechanics they gave her. Seeing mods and videos showing off how she handles in normal stages, i.e. like Sonic's, makes this abundantly clear. Really makes it a shame this was the only time they tried these diverse styles of gameplay, because I feel like if fully developed they would be pretty good (as Sonic's levels, Gamma's shooting, and the treasure hunting did in SA2).
Critiques of Big being a horrible first impression are valid, but I think he's pretty fun once you know how he actually works. The game just does a really, really awful job at explaining his mechanics.
Agreed. It's incredible how much as I started enjoying Big once I figured out everything. It was 80% of the reason i could finally get all the emblems in the game. I dreaded Big a lot at the beginning though.
@@PCFROMVCS When I started playing this as a Kid, I don't think the game was frustrating. It was in fact fun specially the first level in Emerald Coast. I did find big the cat a bit awkard to use but no thing game breaking. What I loved the most as a Kid is the 6 different stories and Hub World which made the game feel more alive. It was not perfect by any means but really decent specially sonic levels.
Yes. Because fishing for a fucking frog for about 4 minutes is more fun than running at high speeds while destorying enemies and getting rings and powerups.
Yea, i wouldn't say bigs gameplay is fun in the least but it is atleast short and bareable with the awesome music playing in the background. And 4 minutes isn't that bad. Still better than all the current games combined.
"Sonic Adventure succeeded in controls and in level design; it had a charming world to explore, a story that no other platformer was even close to attempting at the time and tons of stuff to do. It was a triple-A game, it succeeded in reeling Sonic fans back in, and I think that for all the things it didn't do well, it's incredible that they did get a bunch of things right despite such a demanding first try." *Nodding my head in agreement while impressed by your sheer analytical prowess* "Personally I think that games like Final Fantasy VII and Starfox 64 have aged considerably worse." _Ah, I see, so you choose death then_
i totally agree with him on that last part, actually especially on FF7, i played through that game for the first time a few months ago and fuuucking hated it, its aged awfully
I played the unreleased Star Fox 2, i liked way more than Star Fox 64. Star Fox 2 has way more gameplay variety and interesting concepts than the N64 game, unique ships and two other characters... I liked FFVI more than VII because the cast is bigger with really good character development, the story because the bad guy wins and i liked more the soundtrack.
@@yourehereforthatarentyou I probably wouldn't like that game in general. I despise non-kingdom hearts, ff7 remake, style RPGs. I've never gone halfway thru literally any type of that
@@ygobe2 you mean turn-based games in general? or only ff7's type of turn-based, where its "active time battle" (which is just turn-based but has that dumb slowly-filling-gauge battle system) because i genuinely despise ATB battle systems, but love real turn-based games like dragon quest or octopath traveler (or the final fantasy games that *dont* use that crap)
Sonic Adventure was definitely a product of its time, you really had to be there and play it withing the first few years of its release to fully appreciate it. People like to call it nostalgia or say that it "aged badly" but I think it just aged, period. It didn't go from good to bad, it went from fantastic to just good. Most classic titles that "aged well" actually weren't nearly as impactful or memorable to me on their release as Sonic Adventure was, them being timeless isn't necessarily a good thing if it's stopping them from being really amazing in the moment. It's like canned food, it will still be good decades later but it's just that, canned food. Sonic Adventure was a dish expertly cooked with the freshest ingredients and because of that it had to be consumed right then and there when it was made, but it really beat anything canned (or "timeless") by a mile. I understand why the new generations don't like SA but they have no idea what it was like to play it in its time.
Sho I completely agree and I favor SA1 over SA2 , even tho SA2 is objectively better. This game kinda encapsulates what Sega and the Dreamcast were about. Extremely ambitious to a fault and not as refined as it could’ve been because of this. This game aged “poorly” but it really was lightening in a bottle and you had to be there in 1999 to know. 8 year old me was blown away walking into toys r us and seeing “HD” Sonic talking/emoting and running away from a realistic whale on Emerald Coast; it blew my mind. I still get goosebumps & nostalgia from the dope soundtrack too. This game really felt like going on an adventure and seeing it from the perspective of 6 personalities, which was new to me as well. I think SA1 and SA2 are more than deserving of being remade at this point.
@@54car Well said. I think the time frame of SA1's Japanese release in particular really puts into perspective just how much of a breakthrough this game was at the moment - it came out only a month after Ocarina of Time, which itself was a major milestone for gaming back in the day but it still lacked so much of SA's flare that these two games were like in completely different worlds despite such close release time frame. Like, OoT was the pinnacle of everything we've seen up to that point but SA was like nothing we've seen before.
Sho Exactly, I remember wanting an N64 because my friends had one until I saw SA1. It was such a big leap compared to what was out. I actually didn’t know that the Japanese ver. Was released a month after OOT, which is cemented as a gaming milestone. Good Stuff.
I'm- surprised people find this game to be "bad". This was back when Sega actually tried to pour their heart and soul into Sonic. I don't think I have much say in this considering I wasn't even born when this game was made, since I'm like, 12- but you can SMELL the effort in this game, and the storylines are fucking awesome and the voices and it's just- mmm. Wish I wasn't in a shitty generation.
Man, as someone who played this at 9 years old at release on the original Dreamcast.... thank you. Seeing the constant hate comments "The camera is so bad" from 90% of your generation is just insane. Sonic Adventure blew Crash 3, Rayman 2 AND Ocarina of Time out of the water for me.
Finally finished this video. The end point is the main thing I took away and agreed with. Because no matter how much time passes, I'll argue that SA is NOT a bad game solely because it doesn't live up to today's standards in areas. If we went on that logic for every old game, lots of classics would be considered bad games. But for some reason, people love to do this with Sonic. And its stupid. Adventure as a game for its time and even to this day was the right way to evolve Sonic into 3D and I wish the game was more Mario 64 level of appreciated and used to inspire future 3D games. Cuz lord knows they need it... especially these games that aren't even 3D or try anything as ambitious as Adventure did. But back to the video itself, really good video and I look forward to your SA2 analysis!
TBH I do not think today has any standards. It is all about comedy and pretty graphics. Oh and the most part making as much money as possible with the bare m,inimum and not putting effort or heart into it. I think everything being solely about comedy makes everything so childish
I've heard a couple people claim that they clash with the predominantly blue Sonic, which I never though he did, but is a legitimate reason to not like them, but if the problem is the fact that they're colored at all, I can't really think of a good reason why that would inherently be an issue (I could imagine the problem being that they're different from the Classic design, but to dismiss the mere concept of change is very closed-minded in my opinion, and I don't believe it's as simple as that for most detractors).
I really liked how they handled Perfect Chaos in Sonic Generations. And I was extremely pissed at how in Sonic Forces, freaking Zavok got a boss fight but Shadow and Chaos were taken out with one hit in cutscenes. It was a middle finger to fans of the Adventure games and even to others that simply happened to like thise characters.
Chaos in generations was supposed to actually be the original chaos. Unfortunatly the dreamcast was weak and couldnt support that kind of lightin effect. So for generations they took the original idea and implemented it exactly as they wanted
@@nimrodzohar8542 I know. I like the tentacles and the atmosphere but I still prefer the mostly liquid form with the darkened areas and ridges to give shape as compared to what appears to be a shell or cowl around the body with a weak spot that seems to go against what the final evolution was. Something about the main body in the original just felt more menacing and less cartoony like it couldn't form out of the building in the Sonic Adventure cutscene. I like the boss fight in generations though with the lighting and platforming. Really utilized the character and it's weightiness.
@@nimrodzohar8542 the dreamcast was actually pretty powerful. For the time. I've seen PC games from the same time period that look noticeably worse. Though I suppose that also depends on what other tricks the devs might use and the art direction and so on. For example, Soul Reaver doesn't look as good as Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur but unlike those games, Soul Reaver, once you load the the game, never displays a loading screen, even for fast travel. My point is depending on what other demands a game might have, the graphics can be quite gorgeous on the dreamcast.
It is my favorite Dreamcast game. Nothing will beat the experience of running through Emerald Coast that I had 20 years ago. It is not perfect, but it is better than the sum of its parts.
Sonic Adventure has the best feeling out of all the 3d game. It’s the closest to replicating the momentum based speed of the classic games and every character (even Big) feels natural and fluid.
Ok i play this game and i can tell you it aged so bad. The controls, cutscenes, the physics, Big the fucking cat everything in this game aged so bad Mario 64, Crash and Spyro these games plays well in comparation to this shit. great ideas but badly executed if i were president of Sega i say remake Sonic Adventure NOW! because it need it
It's so cool to see someone else with the same passion for what Sonic was without the contempt that seems to always be present whenever Sonic is brought up nowadays.
Yeah, spot on, though I still liked Tails and would include his stages in the Good category. He doesn't feel like a chore compared to Amy and Big. Looking forward to the SA2 vid.
Maybe a Final Fantasy XV human art style could work for the human designs. Only re-work the different cultural backgrounds of the NPCs to fit with that style (I thought it was cool how Unleashed had different races present in Sonic's world, gave a distinction to the areas you were visiting).
The only part of the video that matters: 28:49 Okay, seriously though, I love this game so much. I want to address first your point brought up about the new generation and how they perceive this game as a piece of crap. What I want to be known, to really put things into perspective, is my own background on this game. Sonic Adventure was not my first 3D Sonic game. I only played Sonic Adventure for my first time not even 3 years ago. I have no nostalgia for Sonic Adventure. Sonic Adventure is my 3rd favorite video game ever made. What I'm trying to say here is that the new generation addressed SHOULD have the capability to look past the game as nothing but poorly aged, but, for whatever reason, they are typically too stubborn to do so. I feel that Sonic Adventure is still very much enjoyable all these years later. Second, I want to talk about people's tendency to blindly listen to what others say without trying something out themselves. Can I just say I am genuinely frustrated about the extent that people are letting themselves do this nowadays, especially concerning Sonic Adventure? It keeps on getting worse and worse and it's actually maddening to me. I hate to see how many people just listened to what some guy said on RUclips, or anywhere else on the internet for that matter, and follow the presented idea like a herd of sheep without thinking about for themselves(Game Grumps, am I right?). This has become one of the core issues I feel has led to this game's belittlement over the past decade or so, and its infliction on this game's reputation is just sad to see. To get a little more positive, how about I present what exactly I think of this game. Jeb here used two particular words(granted, in a totally different context) that so elegantly describe WHY I love this game in such a simple, yet perfectly understandable way. Inconsistent ambition. This not only describes why I love this specific game but why I love this game series as a whole. It's a thrill ride. The total experience of having some stuff that's great, some not so great, and all because are willing to put new ideas on the table as much as they can, all with a layer of indisputable charm in Sonic Adventure particularly, is what keeps me hooked too well. I can name more that I like in this game compared to most games, as well as more I don't like, and, honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I like having this outlook because it means I'm always kept interested, never put off by too much bad, and never tired of too much safe, consistent good that doesn't try hard enough to be special. This is why I love Sonic the Hedgehog, but more importantly, why I love Sonic Adventure.
Kids today don't understand the concessions that early 3D gaming needed. It's why Mario 64 became a collectathon with only a couple dozen stages and mini stages instead of dozens and dozens of levels.
The Dreamcast was my first console growing up. We had the trial stage of Emerald Coast on there, and I replayed it nonstop, taking turns with my family to try and beat the A rank mission (which I believe was completing it under 2 minutes? ) When I hear the that upbeat guitar at the start of the level, I still feel nothing but excitement. Sonic Adventure was the first video game I was hooked on, I adored it. There was edge (or what felt like it to a 10 year old) , there was amazing music, there was exploration, and for me, never having really played video games, I couldn't have asked for a better step in the door. It was a blast, and it really breaks my heart seeing everyone rip it to shreds without giving it any benefit of the doubt. Sure, it aged poorly, but so did Mario 64 for instance and I really fail to see much charm in that by comparison. Sure, Sonic Adventure isn't perfect, but it's got heart! It remains to be part of the golden age of sonic, at least in my mind.
A respectful, in-depth analysis of my favorite Sonic game from a channel that does in-depth analyses of other Sonic games? You've got yourself a new subscriber. Also I'm 90% sure this game's aesthetic for the Knuckles Clan's past is what planted the seed for my interest in Mesoamerican culture. Kudos to Sonic Team for traveling abroad for ideas.
It would have been neat if the Chao that Chaos sees after being beaten were the Chao you raised in the garden. If it was done like this it might give the players a sense of satisfaction with raising them and knowing that by doing so you helped Chaos to see that there is good in the world and that the Chao can thrive.
I’ll never understand why people consider this a bad game when it’s so clearly good. Sure later Sonic games from the mid-2000s were bad but I’d go as far as to say the blue blur’s Dreamcast career was his high point.
BetterSADX also fixes a ton of glitches that the ports somehow got. Like Sonic Adventure and DX are both fine, but when they got ported over they somehow got butchered beyond belief
Sonic Adventure games have dated stuff for sure, but that doesn't mean the entire package is moot. I consider the Drummond era to be the best 3D Sonic had to offer (certainly better than the era we have now which is the worst era of Sonic imo), every character had importance, no character ever went off the deep end (well except for Sonic Battle) and it also featured the era where the cast were playable in each subsequent game. Sure Adventure 1 has polish issues, dated game design structure and not so favorable gameplay styles (Big and Amy. Though personally I enjoyed Amy's gameplay and Big's isn't that bad) I see it as something that would work wonders if it were made during this time.. I think it was serviceable in introducing the entire cast into 3D since before then they had only made 2D appearances. I personally don't mind Amy's classic design (spoilers Amy and Tails are my favorite Sonic characters) I mean you have to look at her design through the lens of which she was made. Around the 80's and early 90's many characters had designs that were just alternate skins of another character. I mean Luigi was basically a taller Mario with different color scheme before later games gave him an identity it was quite common for characters to have designs like that. It's a bit lazy, and you don't have to accept that, but it was a design at the time. I will say I think her modern design is way better.. I also enjoyed your rundown of the character it's part of what made her enjoyable in early Sonic titles. I really enjoyed this review it was a nice take on the game that not a lot of people go into detail.
Don't get me wrong, I totally get Amy's Classic design, (I mean, after all, Minnie Mouse and Ms. Pac-Man say hi), but I really do like a her new one more. I do agree with your assessment on the eras of Sonic, though. ... I guess that's kind of a spoiler for the "other" reason why I decided to make this video, which I'll get more into later with SA2 and ???. I miss this timeframe when Sonic was treated as something very important.
I agree that the worst era of Sonic's career started in 2010 when they decided to turn Sonic into a complete joke. Sonic was supposed to be cool, not what Pontac & Graff have been writing him as with Roger Craig Smith's unfitting voice. It's unfortunate that the worst era for Sonic has been the longest. I agree the Dreamcast Era was the series at its best, although the 4kids Era at least knew how to properly portray the characters even if the gameplay wasn't quite as good during this era, which was the shortest at only about 5 years. I'm hoping that the 2010s direction for Sonic officially ends when the decade does. As for Classic Amy her design is very Japanese feeling, with her clothing being based on Japanese fashion that was fairly popular in the 90s. Her design is that of a cutesy pink haired anime girl, with her clothes having some resemblance to girls school uniforms in anime only green with a yellow skirt. The Modern Design was made to make her more marketable to players in the US, where girls don't really wear cute Japanese Uniform like fashions preferring to go with a simple red dress. Her Spikes were altered to resemble a more feminine hairstyle in addition to this.
I genuinely believe that if handled right the Chao Garden concept could be one hell of a mobile game. Ideally without a mountain of micro-transactions it would definitely have if they actually made it. But like I said IF it was handled right.
To answer "what other platformers had something like this" in regards to strong emotional impact and making you want to cry, hands down Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on PS1 (the wii remake tones it down). That game and it's sequel are emotional gut punches. And that game came out in 1997.
That was honestly an impressive video overall, this is some professional level stuff you're producing in my opinion man. Keep that up, I highly look forward to SA2.
"You probably think I spent way too long illustrating my point" NO NO you don't understand I didn't know how badly I needed long form Sonic analysis in my life CONTINUE
Not to sound like a weeb, but the japanese voice over actually makes the cutscenes make more sense. it sort of meets the awkward expressions in the middle to help convey what they're trying to do. I don't know how to explain it, but a lot of these cutscenes are actually genuinely hilarious in an intentional way because voice actors do such a great job. Like, did you know that the scene where Knuckles confronts Eggman in hotel is supposed to actually be funny and goofy? With Eggman going "GEH?!- Na-Nakkurusu!!". Same with Sonic making fun of Knuckles trusting Eggman again and Knuckles covering and screaming "U- Urusaaaai!" Like it's just more expressive and emotive.
I agree. Even though I like the English actors, I think the Japanese script and acting are overall far superior. They did a really good job. The only thing that's missing, though, is Deem Bristow as Robotnik. He's the only English actor to fully match his Japanese counterpart's performance and even top it in some scenes.
You're absolutely right that all the Sonic hate is just mob mentality and people not being able to form their own opinions. "Egoraptor said Sonic games suck soooo I guess I gotta make fun of them too!" Sonic 06 somehow made the Adventure games retroactively bad. I mean, there is no such thing as an objectively good or bad game, but that's another conversation. I don't think the Adventure games aged poorly at all. There was a very good reason the games were held is such high regard back then. The controls were tight and had a great sense of momentum, and the worlds were so much fun to explore. I still love going back to replay Emerald Coast every once in a while. The game's attitude was so on point. The camera work, the fast paced action, and the kick ass rock music all worked together so well.
I mean yeah, maybe we can't say it's objectively bad. Though it's really unpolished and buggy. I'd be willing to bet that there are other people out there who have different ideas of what the worst game ever made is. Our enjoyment of games is mostly subjective.
@@PinkDawn1308 no really. Metacritic, even AVGN, called it the worst game ever made. This was an unfinished *Pre-Alpha* By a company that claims to make gains under 10k.
It's not just that the Dreamcast graphics are better (And I don't just mean preferable, they straight up removed graphical polish in the ports), the Dreamcast collision is better. Collision is a part of why people call it "The really bad game", and it's not nearly as bad in the Dreamcast version. EDIT: Before anyone says that it relates to nostalgia, I grew up on DX, then went back to DX a month ago, and then went to Dreamcast Conversion immediately after, and after beating Sonic's story in both, I ran into about 5-10 times as much collision in DX than I did on the Dreamcast Conversion.
yup, which is why when people like arin from game grumps disses sonic adventure as horrible because of the remade version;s obviously inferior collusion, it has enough power to ruin the original game's mostly clean reputation. sickening
You know, this same sort of concept of people hating a game because the more accessible ports are so poorly handled also really applies well to film adaptations of... stuff. It tends to be why people assume Superman is as dull as cardboard and completely unrelatable, as that's arguably how he's been portrayed in every single live-action film, or people considering Deadpool to be an obnoxious moron who more or less indulges in "meme culture" or something, because that's how he's marketed. Both of these characters are significantly different in the comics.
People just love to hate this game for the sake of just being haters sonic hasn’t played as smooth since his adventure 1 & 2 days and the SWAGGER both games had is untouched stilllllllll
I agree with most things said but I actually enjoy Tails/Amy’s stages despite Amy being a bit slow and I think there is more to the story than people give it credit for. This video and Ruby of Blue’s video are the best videos on Sonic Adventure, I’m not sure if Sonic Team is remaking this game and SA2 but if they are, they need to see these videos.
Amy's story and her gameplay is sadly very underrated in this game. I also could see Zero probably chases after her even after getting the chao emerald from the bird so that it can get used for some other robot like its parents were.
How tf do you hold my attention for so long? I see the length of your videos and think "I'll probably start now but finish this later" AND BEFORE I KNOW IT, its over! Amazing. You're a really great RUclipsr and a talented narrator. Good job 👏🏾
I love how you show everything this game had to offer and give reasons as to what made it the game it is people miss the point of what it was about it’s all about flaws and never about the adventure this is the perfect review and it clearly shows why Sonic adventure is so beloved by fans thank you
Yeah, this is why I hate the whole two worlds BS Iizuka is now shoving down our throats. You explained it perfectly in the beginning. Adventure was just simply Eggman trying to conqure a city on the mainland. While Sonic wanted time to himself.
Most of the unfair hate i see this game get nowadays is the shit like Egoraptor exposing a glitch that was in DX (widely considered the inferior version), and people saying "The camera is horrible and the cutscenes are awfully dated". Yeah a lot of games around this time were. Mario 64 and OOT are very dated for today's standards. Sonic Adventure at the time was widely considered great, some even calling it revolutionary. Its a little dated, but by god. Show me a video game from the 6th generation that fucking isn't.
I will NEVER understand the criticisms aimed at SA1 and 2. Those games are LITERALLY just Mario 64 styled games with a faster speed, a varied moveset, and greater emphasis on style and action. Yet people make it SO COMPLICATED when looking at these games! Then they nitpick how the physics arent PERFECTLY capturing the classic games as if they NEEDED to! I can play these games till the cows come home! I LOVE these games, it isnt just nostalgia. They are well crafted games that could only have been even better had they kept on the same track they were going but no. Thanks for this video. It is SORELY needed!
Six years ago, a Sonictuber goes by the name " StephenKnux" made a bunch of videos talking about his opinions on sonic's voice actors and surprisingly the voice actor of Rouge The Bat and Omochao who is also the voice director commented on his videos, She said: "I just have to say, we had no real choice on what the voices should sound like. We were often directed to do things which might be considered "odd" or whatever. Sega also wanted the actors to LOOK like the parts they were doing. Oh come on! They also decided not to use adult women which are always best to do kid's like Tails. They used real kids and each kid grow up so we had to use two brothers, then replace with another boy, Omo Chao was really annoying but that's what they wanted. Oh well. It was a combo of script that could have been better, the way we had to loop over existing Japanese footage that was animated before they even had animated it. (sigh)" -Lani Minella (Source: ruclips.net/video/_sLrn-dvDD8/видео.html ). "The whole casting and direction was something i was obviously involved with in the start. And remember it all started with the script. And Naka-san (AKA: Yuji Naka) originally wanted the actors to LOOK like the characters. Also it's well known that more male kid voices are done by females but Naka decided for the first time they wanted a real kid. I tried in vain to point out the issues this causes, like a lot more time spent getting performances, how kids grow up and their voices change as they mature...but no. Everything about the casting was quite a head shaker." -Lani Minella (Source: ruclips.net/video/_X2t6kR17aY/видео.html ). "The whole casting experience (Which i was involved in but had to do what we were told to) They wanted Knuckles to be a cross with Jamaican Island Attitude and confidence." (What she said makes sense since knuckle's design is based on Jamaican people, like his hair is based on Afro hairstyle and his shoes have the colors of the Jamaican flag) she later adds "The reason we were replaced is sort of a mystery, but i'm glad we were participate when we did" -Lani Minella (Source: ruclips.net/video/2UkdfRInhvA/видео.html )
Fun fact, the change in dialogue was not intentional for story purposes. But, to this day that is something I absolutely love about the game and something I still have not seen to this day in another game. Playing the same cutscene but the dialogue changes based on the perspective of the character. I was an accident wonder.
It wasn't accident it was intentional I think its like Every Character thinks he is a Hero of his own life kind of. Although its weird I like that the speech doesn't repeat it self.
It's like we're not watching the events live, but how everyone is trying to retell what happened to them. Weird though is the different versions of when Amy runs into Sonic. It seems like the different versions of their encounters should've switched campaigns... maybe. Then again, you could probably argue that Sonic didn't take his own speed into account and wasn't entirely conscious of how he bolted away from Amy, but anyone else would have noticed, or something like that.
@@JebZone I think Sonic says "I got it!" in a taunting voice while white text throws itself at your face saying "You Lose!", but it's been so many years.
I will always love the Universe comics for passing the torch of Gamma to Omega, thus giving a great re-iteration of how Team Dark became a team. In short: Shadow (Whose already been recruited into GUN by Rouge) heads out to find Gamma, to seek his help in defeating Eggman. Eggman, who also knew of Gammas location dispatched Omega to destroy him. And while he was critically wounded during the encounter, Gamma then hacked into Omega and with the last bit of consciousness he had, overwrote Eggmans control over him and giving him his freedom, thus asking Shadow if Omega can take the position he was offered in his stead. And thus, my favorite guntastic Arsonist robot was born. I love Team Darks synergy so much
I just completed sonic adventure. Man does it feel so good to play metal sonic. As a kid I would always look at metal sonic at eggmans base and think this will never be possible. Yesterday I did it after 15 years man this game will always be precious to me. I’ll never forget it.
To be honest, though, Metal Sonic shouldn't have been a reskin. Rather, a separate character with separate animations, coupled with separate voice and behavioral manners.
Sonic Adventure was the first Sonic game I ever beat. I went in knowing very little about the game, other than that it was in 3D, but I loved it. I was willing to deal with the quirks because I knew deep down that this was a good game, and I had a real fun time. I definitely want to beat it again some day.
Not all of the stories are as fun, but considering Sonic gets twice as many levels as the others or more, I agree that saying it's 'half bad' isn't quite right. Personally, I enjoyed Sonic, Tails and Gamma the most. Amy was okay. Knuckles and Big frustrated me.
Great video, highlights all the good things about the game without neglecting to mention the not so good things. Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) was the first game I've ever played, playing it every now and then since I was 4 1/2 years old. Of course I also like Adventure 2, but the first game is still my favorite, mainly because I like the Sonic gameplay more and the over all better adventure feeling which mainly comes from the open world and the more open stages. Gamma was a great character, good own story which highlights parts of Eggman and a bit of Amy, his stages and overall gameplay were a ton of fun and his death is the saddest moment in the whole Sonic franchise. And am I the only one who likes the fishing with Big? Sure his story (and character) is a bit shallow but his fishing isn't as bad as you make it sound like.
I think sonic adventure was so good because it had so much EXTRA to do. The chao thing and completing levels just for the chao and the good and evil concept was so good. Not just to catch new pokemon but if pokemon had a dark and light aspect and playing the game differently resulted in different outcomes. Imagine a dark pikachu. Is that crazy?
06:07 it has never been a problem for japanese. As all fantasy anime, jrpg have anthropomorphic mascot characters next to human characters. Also remember that these humans dont look like realistic humans, but anime characters. Nearly every fantasy anime or jrpg has anthropomorphic characters next to humans. Even Final Fantasy has Caith Sith. Its all parts of yokai folklore that in the end became inspiration for Pokemon. Glad you touched on the fact that people see SA1 voice acting as "bad" I agree that the direction given was likely off and the actors themselves didn't seem as comfortable in their roles as they would become later, but that doesn't mean the actors themselves were bad. I would say that the overall voice acting quality is low in SA1, but it isn't the fault of the actors themselves. The original Sonic voice actor may have been awkward in SA1, but I think he did an amazing job with SA2 and in Heroes (albeit the direction was definitely a little off in Heroes once again, but that, ONCE AGAIN, isn't the fault of the actor- the writers and directors are usually responsible for these issues) I would LOVE a remake of some of these games with their original voice actors (where possible) reprising their roles with updated/fixed/better translated dialogue and the experience that they've gained along the way. I also think we'd see an improvement with the fact that technology and industry standards have grown to where you're no longer forced to match the timing and lip flaps of the Japanese releases. No more unnecessary awkward dialogue interruptions.
"Humanity" Hey hey HEY! Don't lump us in with those barbarian echidnas. We'd never massacre innocent chao. Well unless they were sitting on an oil deposit or something.
I loved the adventure areas, I get burned out from repetitive gameplay. Like if I didn’t feel like doing more levels Id walk around and go to the hotel and casino. Then when I felt like it Id continue playing the campaign. The freedom of SA1 was a very enjoyable aspect to me.
Nostalgia hits me when I play this game. I first played it on GameCube and when I later noticed the Dreamcast version I was a little envious. Your video is very detailed and interesting thank you so much for it. I’ll subscribe to you.
I'm glad I found these videos. I'll watch the SA2 vid next. Thank you for a nice review of this gem. I personally like Tails OP gameplay (flying through Windy Valley, Sky Deck and Speedy Highway is pretty fun) and the slow and methodical Amy gameplay which is all about how to maintain that hammer bounce status the entire time. But big thank you for making justice of Knuckles' campaign. I can talk about this game a lot but I dont wanna write a thesis right now so I'll just say this: SA1's "It Doesn't Matter" is MY Sonic (the character) theme.
I don't have nostalgia for this game, I'm 17. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it when I played it *recently*, so it must be good, right? I started playing it literally as a joke and out of curiosity but it ended up being great and memorable. Also I'd say the only weak points are Amy and Big, because I had a ton of fun with Tails. Flying felt awesome and satisfying, and skipping large sections of the level actually felt great. Tails' story also resonated with me. I'd even go so far as to say Big's story is really unique and good, comedically and seriously. His theme song's lyrics highlight how he just kinda wandered into the whole story, and that he lives a simple life of friendship and fun. That ended up contradicting Chaos directly and he became a hero, just by living how he wanted to live now that im done with some sonic autism, im gonna go watch your other videos, probably
Thank you for this video, as well as the others of this series. This and other similar honest videos (such as "Understanding the Music of Sonic the Hedgehog" and several from Characters In-Depth) give me the feeling that more people who have their own opinions of a game or character, especially while the general opinion is bad, are finally managing to speak out, in quite an eloquent way I might add, and at the same time give courage to the people who haven't spoken out yet, but wish to do so.
I never finished this game, but the memories I have of it are exceptionally fond. For some reason, I found the scene where E-101 was being converted/upgraded after the first boss fight against it to be absolutely freaking terrifying/disturbing as a kid, like, nightmare level... Aside from thar, it was a pretty enjoyable game

It's sweet now that the Sonic Adventure fans have finally rised up and have defended the titles. Now the titles' fans have finished being pushed around and let their voices heard. Hopefully the message can get across that Sonic wasn't bad.
I think it's among general popular opinion that the adventure games, as well as sonic, are good. But you always have a vocal minority

That's a very good detail.
i miss it when sonic games had this much detail about there stories no matter how much classic fan 123 says that sonic being serious is stupid
Thanks for this rad video. finally someone mentions CHAOS IS A RAMPAGING CHILD MONSTER AND HE IS WATER BECAUSE THATS SONICS WEAKNESS. I LOVE THAT

Sonic Adventure is, even Sonic 06 is partially redeemable for me, for one reason and one reason only: The spotlight they gave and the work they put into each character, not just Sonic.
in sonic forces, as soon as sonic... ‘died’, all hell broke loose and eggman took over(?)
it’s a staple in potaff’s (admittedly) wikipedia’d writing of sonic, where they seem to think he’s the only thing holding the world together.
and to that i say that’s pure bastardisation and makes me question why they were hired
Prima Marvelous true
Sonic 06 (at least Sonic’s story in 06)is decent with all honesty but it was a major downgrade to Adventure just like how Forces is a downgrade to Generations
What's really sad about Gamma's death is when you realize that it possibly occurred mere moments before Amy fought in that same area with Zero, since he would have had to have died for her ending to be possible. It's worse in Sonic Battle when the gang sees a robot that looks exactly like Gamma which attacks them, leaving the gang confused and simply thinking, "That wasn't Gamma..."
Also that Gamma was originally going to suicide himself but it was too dark so it was scrapped to what his brother did to him.
The big gameplay was only 4 levels and only took 10 minutes for the entire story after I learned how to play
Really goes to show how actually playing a game can really form your opinion on it rather than just hearing what a guy on youtube has to say about it.
Almost 21 years later, and I'm still not over Gamma's death 😢
@Trevor Anthony yeah, he's cool, but he's sentient because he's angry at Eggman for "wasting his potential." Gamma became sentient and rebelled because he learned emotions and what's right and wrong. He fought to liberate his siblings from Eggman.
@@TempoName yeahhh. To me, Omega is actually a pretty crap successor. All the steel, none of the heart.

Imo Amy's gameplay is fundamentally fun in the same way that Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles are since it's still fun just to move around the game world with the character, even if its particulars are undercooked.
i enjoyed amys campaign. i liked the idea a lot.

Good Stuff.

Mario 64 controls like shit a lot of times but no one talks about that
I never got why people complained about Sonic's green eyes, his whole palet is basic color theory.
buntado6 ppl just love to complain
Never underestimate the human races ability to nitpick.
They're pretty
I've heard a couple people claim that they clash with the predominantly blue Sonic, which I never though he did, but is a legitimate reason to not like them, but if the problem is the fact that they're colored at all, I can't really think of a good reason why that would inherently be an issue (I could imagine the problem being that they're different from the Classic design, but to dismiss the mere concept of change is very closed-minded in my opinion, and I don't believe it's as simple as that for most detractors).
It's because they're nostalgia blind Classic Sonic fanboys
The nostalgia that came flooding in when you brought up the "Chao Island" website was crazy. Man that takes me baaaaaaaaccck
It has my favorite Robotnik line since Sat AM.

Oh yeah chaos in generations terrifies me although I'm not a huge fan of the updated design.
Oh yeah Chaos in Forces where Tails become coward
It is my favorite Dreamcast game. Nothing will beat the experience of running through Emerald Coast that I had 20 years ago. It is not perfect, but it is better than the sum of its parts.
Sonic Adventure has the best feeling out of all the 3d game. It’s the closest to replicating the momentum based speed of the classic games and every character (even Big) feels natural and fluid.
You can blame egoraptor for starting the hate bandwagon for this masterpiece, keep in mind arin has also stated he thinks ocarina of time is bad.
He's not completely wrong about that, but if you're referencing the video I think you are, he's wrong about the reasons OoT isn't all that.

I don’t like the cartoony human designs from unleashed. I can’t imagine a truck of GUN soldiers rolling up looking like that LMFAO
Maybe a Final Fantasy XV human art style could work for the human designs.

The only part of the video that matters: 28:49
Okay, seriously though, I love this game so much.
Personally I like Amy's Story as well besides Knuckles and E 102 Stories

I like how you say "This was the huge leap" right as Chaos is moon jumping onto a light pole.
I'm glad some people appreciate the little things. :)
BetterSADX makes it my favorite 3D Sonic game.

The worst era of Sonic? Lol, we're past the Dark Age
@@trmispingus2018 no. We're still in one. Since sonic has become a COMPLETE and UTTER JOKE!! why? WE DONT NEED THIS DIRECTION!!

NO NO you don't understand I didn't know how badly I needed long form Sonic analysis in my life CONTINUE
Same with Sonic making fun of Knuckles trusting Eggman again and Knuckles covering and screaming "U- Urusaaaai!"
Like it's just more expressive and emotive.
Yea no I get that. After playing the game through once I put the voice language to Japanese for a bit because I thought it sounded better.
By that logic, Big Rigs Over the Road Racing can't be seen as an objectively bad game. In fact, BROTRR is the worst game ever made.
I really believe that Tails' story was made with the idea of "the younger sibling plays as Tails" which has always kind of been his ethos since day 1
People just love to hate this game for the sake of just being haters sonic hasn’t played as smooth since his adventure 1 & 2 days and the SWAGGER both games had is untouched stilllllllll

I also could see Zero probably chases after her even after getting the chao emerald from the bird so that it can get used for some other robot like its parents were.

i can tell you one thing:
everyone who doesn't like adventure likes the gamegrumps

"The whole casting experience (Which i was involved in but had to do what we were told to) They wanted Knuckles to be a cross with Jamaican Island Attitude and confidence." I will always love the Universe comics for passing the torch of Gamma to Omega, thus giving a great re-iteration of how Team Dark became a team.

Not only is Chao Island active, but it just got a revamp. The new 3D Chao Viewer can show you any possible chao including small inbetween states.

Glad you touched on the fact that people see SA1 voice acting as "bad"
I agree that the direction given was likely off and the actors themselves didn't seem as comfortable in their roles as they would become later, but that doesn't mean the actors themselves were bad. I would say that the overall voice acting quality is low in SA1, but it isn't the fault of the actors themselves.
The original Sonic voice actor may have been awkward in SA1, but I think he did an amazing job with SA2 and in Heroes (albeit the direction was definitely a little off in Heroes once again, but that, ONCE AGAIN, isn't the fault of the actor- the writers and directors are usually responsible for these issues)
I would LOVE a remake of some of these games with their original voice actors (where possible) reprising their roles with updated/fixed/better translated dialogue and the experience that they've gained along the way. I also think we'd see an improvement with the fact that technology and industry standards have grown to where you're no longer forced to match the timing and lip flaps of the Japanese releases. No more unnecessary awkward dialogue interruptions.

"And even without [Michael Jackson]..."
Funny I'm watching this video when I am, then- with that leaked prototype surfacing.
"Humanity"
Hey hey HEY! Don't lump us in with those barbarian echidnas. We'd never massacre innocent chao.
Well unless they were sitting on an oil deposit or something.
I feel like Gamma and his story could of easily been its own game.

I loved the adventure areas, I get burned out from repetitive gameplay. Like if I didn’t feel like doing more levels Id walk around and go to the hotel and casino. Then when I felt like it Id continue playing the campaign. The freedom of SA1 was a very enjoyable aspect to me.
It feels like it’s open world but it gives you choices to go through levels that change the story
This game is great. I played it yesterday for the first time after loving how it looked, and I was not disappointed.
Completely agree. Glad to see someone counter the lame internet narrative that the Adventure games are bad when they're really not...
That ended up contradicting Chaos directly and he became a hero, just by living how he wanted to live
now that im done with some sonic autism, im gonna go watch your other videos, probably
As of 2019, I still a kid and Sonic Adventure is my favorite video game of all time
Thank you for this video, as well as the others of this series.
I mean the internet has bern doing that but its baiscly a civil war in the sonic comunity
26:30 I has to turn the speed to 0.25 to see the thing that flashed onscreen and it’s something that says Durex!? What even is Durex?
Thefroggamer 8789 Condoms.
@@octoisgayNow don't tell him what "that " is

@@octoisgay Okay I guess you do have an fair point 👍
I never finished this game, but the memories I have of it are exceptionally fond. For some reason, I found the scene where E-101 was being converted/upgraded after the first boss fight against it to be absolutely freaking terrifying/disturbing as a kid, like, nightmare level... Aside from thar, it was a pretty enjoyable game
