They aren't dumping the ice water over their head to avoid donating. The dumping of the bucket of ice water over the head is to raise awareness and get the word out about donating to ALS. Everyone who is doing this challenge is also donating.

It is characterized by muscle spasticity, weakness due to muscle atrophy speech impairment and difficulties in swallowing and breathing. The idea of using ice water for this initiative was for people to briefly experience the muscular difficulties that ALS patients suffer from. Most people, including celebrities take the challenge and DONATE on top of it because it's a fun way to raise awareness and get people to do the same.
I hate seeing people say that the ice bucket challenge is stupid or worthless and they "aren't donating money". They do donate money and this is a way to raise awareness. What would you rather be more interested in raising awareness? Talk to people or pour a bucket of ice over your head. Most people listen to ice bucket challenges than an actual conversation.
