Nothing excuses the real fucked up shit he said about literally ANYONE who wasnt white protestant (including to his Jewish wife) but it would've been interesting to see how his shift to socialist politics would've played out or if he would've relapsed back into his open endorsement of fascism and Hitler. I think he would've stayed racist but probably not as aggressively racist as he was in this youth, I dont think Lovecraft had the ability to be that introspective about himself to throw away his hate.

My biggest issue with LOST (apart from the racism behind the scenes) is how the show became so dominated by the Kate/Jack/Sawyer love triangle. It got to the point where more interesting characters (imo) like Sun, Jin, Sayid, and Desmond were losing screen time because of show’s focus on who Kate would choose.

One thing I think is important to be mindful of also is that with HP Lovecraft and JKR, their horrible opinions heavily influence the work; Lovecraft’s work is all about the horrors of interracial relationships, immigration, progress, and PoC in evil cults murdering white people. Harry Potter is full of things like actual antisemitic caricatures, misogyny, open hatred of fat people, racist names for non-English characters, etc. Point is, those are cases of bigoted works that had a lot of coding people missed until they learned the creators were openly overtly awful.
I haven’t seen Lost, but this sounds more like a modern animation issue, where behind the scenes it’s awful, but the work itself isn’t perpetuating those ideas. In those cases, I personally think, just, like, enjoy it but support those harmed, yknow?

    • @RaionOwO

Also, that any support given to JKR monetarily will go towards her donations to hate groups, and non-monetary support she's explicitly said she takes as support for her herself, including her hateful views. So it's different again.

There’s also the fact that these authors are (most of the time) really the only ones who are producing their work. So when TV shows, movies, cartoons, etc. have many people and different minds going into these works, the works themselves might not really reflect the views of the one director, writer, actor, etc. who is prejudiced in some way. And although these media can have harmful ideas in them, it isn’t as prevalent as authors whose books are steeped in their viewpoints, because they are only written by them. (And while many authors do have beta readers and editors, many aren’t worried about the messages the book they are reading is putting out, they are more focused on correcting typos and getting paid)

Lost was a show that relied on the mystery/science fiction elements more than the actual characters and plot, then the mystery became absolutely ridiculous. @dali-dog Год назад +1

@mericanmodi8479 this is a sorta confusing question. I’m not 100% sure whether you’re just trolling or something, or whether it’s a reference to something in Lost (I haven’t watched it), but I’ll answer in case you’re genuinely asking. First of all, when it comes to characters, you can very clearly tell the gender they’re supposed to be. The characters are all intended to be a specific gender, and anybody who knows the show would know which characters are women. It’s like how people just know the genders of their friends because they know them, and if their gender was different than how they appear they would have told you. This is also a relatively old show, so you’re extremely unlikely to find many trans or nonbinary characters.
As for race it’s slightly more complicated, because there are some people where it is hard to tell even if you know them well, but in general if a character looks fully white to everyone watching and no other race is pointed out or mentioned, then it’s a safe bet to assume they’re white. And to be honest, the majority of the time it is easy to tell which characters are white or not, so it’s a fair point to say that a show is overwhelmingly white or doesn’t treat it’s POC characters as well. In my opinion, assumptions like this are honestly fine, especially when it comes to media. If you’re specifically told otherwise by the source material, well then your assumption is just wrong, but otherwise TV shows are all in how we perceive them. There’s no reason to believe that the average white character is non-white or the average man character is a woman, so we assume they are what they look like because that’s how it’s portrayed to us. Overall, asking “how do you determine the gender or race of a character?” kind of just seems like unnecessary what-ifs

      @dali-dog Год назад

@mericanmodi8479 "POC" is an often used abbreviation of "people of colour", meant to refer to anybody black, asian, indigenous or anything other than white. It's true that the word "white" has at times changed, and that the privileged people in control have at times changed their mind on who to categorize as white based on whatever is convenient for them or whoever they want to oppress. Language is and always has been complicated, and it's especially complicated when talking about something as nuanced as race. This is all a fine thing to talk about, but it's a complete derailment of what this comment thread is about. Considering whether Afghans count as white or not is completely unnecessary when talking about the representation in Lost (I guess unless there's a character who's specifically pointed out to be Afghan?). The conversation topic is about whether Lost has good representation, so if people perceive a huge majority the characters as being white due to there being no suggestion otherwise (which, let's face it, most of the characters who seem white probably are completely white without any grey-area) and all the characters who *are* clearly of another race are given the short end of the stick, then it's not good representation. It's as simple as that, there's no need to go into the specifics of individual races and hypotheticals that don't have anything to do with the show. The thing is, people need to be able to talk about race in order to make progress in society and the media we create. It doesn't really help anybody to suggest that we shouldn't critique bad representation just because the word "white" might not have much meaning. Fact is, there are a lot of people who are straight up white without grey-area, myself included, and white people are the ones who have dominated the spotlight and forced everyone else away, and art reflects reality and reality reflects art. That's a problem, and how are we supposed to fix it if we can't even use the word "white" to describe people who literally are white.

Right, that's how life is tbh. We're just so accustomed to well paced stories that we forget life is chaos. There's no end or beginning. It just is.

It also tends to begin with your birth, much like how a story has a beginning, with the first word, and an ending, with the last

Hey as far as lost inspired things go there was that kids show flight 29 down. I was a kid when those shows were a thing, I don’t know what either show was about really but my older siblings watched flight 29 down because my parents would watch lost. Just a weird vague memory lol

If you thought the show's producers and the series was racist, you should look into its fandom. I've suspected for years that many of the fans were incredibly racist, while trying to pretend they were progressive. Some of the message boards, forums and articles are really disgusting to read.

No. The sentence structure is easy to misinterpret, he's actually saying he visited Korea because of Lost, and through that he met someone Korean who he began dating. Not that he began dating someone Korean because he watched Lost.

This felt apologetic for Lost honestly. Especially since Jarvis once said that just because it was happening in the past. But just because the face was okay then the people behind the scenes getting hurt doesn't matter? What a weird take.

I did wonder, being charitable to the creators, if they were having trouble having a kid on set due to child film labor laws and wanted to have him off the show or to have less screen time. It was stupid to kill off Michael, that actor is incredible and probably the best-known actor on the show at the time.

I mean JK Rowling is still profiting from her work so maybe supporting her is still shitty to do? While HP Lovecraft was more blatantly an awful human being, his work has kinda been taken over and expanded upon by the groups he hated on so it's kinda reclaimed in a way? Idk, until someone decides to fix all the messed up stuff in Harry Potter with a reboot or something, but even then why not just read a different magic book series? Discworld and Earthsea are better and not transphobic or racist or anti-semitic.

But I did came to say that It's Always Sunny is hella racist but are we throwing out that amazing piece of comedy history? Seinfeld apparently had issues.
What I'm saying is look, we finally have more representation than ever in Hollywood writing rooms and that's why sht is changing for the better. It's still abismal but compared to 5, 10, and 20 years ago??
Anyway how lucky am I to be on my 1st Lost watch?! I recognize this will only happen once and Im savoring it all lol
