  • A first-of-its-kind effort to clean up massive amounts of garbage floating in the Pacific Ocean is officially underway. A 2,000-foot long boom began its journey out to sea. It will work to clean up a huge area of trash floating between California and Hawaii known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Carter Evans spoke to the young inventor behind the ambitious clean-up.

Thank God for people like this young man. Tackling a problem instead of just looking the other way or making a negative statement and going about his business like so many of us do. Thank you young man for cleaning up our ocean

I'm happy to finally hear some news of this clean up. I made a donation and got an "OceanCleanup" T-shirt from them about a year ago. I have tried to stop using things made of plastic, but it is extremely difficult. Plastic is ubiquitous in our modern world. I feel plastic proliferation is the greatest pollution threat of our time.

John you shouldn’t stop trying to use plastic as long as you dispose of it properly. Put it in your recycling or throw it away correctly and it it won’t end up in the ocean. You’re not the problem, China and India are

Two things 1) Stop using plastic as much as possible 2) Stop thinking somebody else must pickup your trash.

Stopping the dumping is the elephant in the room. Ocean dumping isn’t accidental, it’s policy.
And when developing nations ban plastic bags, how can the US not follow their lead?
I was in Saudi and asked about going to the beach near Gizan. The others said don’t bother, it’ll break your heart. Every sq meter is trashed.

    IDEA !
If plastic one day can be bought and sold by weight like aluminum cans and other metals, there would be less plastic in the oceans and on land.
The plastic could be recycled and there would be more jobs also.
The oceans and earth would be much cleaner and safer for people and animals including birds and fish.

Good plan. We must start somewhere doing something. To all those people and agencies who are ALREADY doing something, thank you so very much. Merry Christmas.

Devastating tsunamis have that unfortunate side effect. The corpses go to the same places wood and plastic and construction debris go.
