Oh man, I wasn't expecting this one. Thank you so much Dan, your podcasts are amazing for during chores and trying to fall asleep. Absolutely awesome, keep up the excellent work❤
This author's own words undermine her credibility. One minute she is talking about SSBNs then 5 minutes later she has forgotten them completely and claims the US doesn't have ICBMs that could hit NK without them overflying Russia. The land based stuff is irrelevant. The USN could park a SSBN 50 miles from Pyongyang and the Dear Leader would never know. Later she doubled down, stating that this was a "huge hole in our national security". My Spidey Sense says someone pushing for longer range land based missiles that nobody needs spun her this silly scenario that anyone with access to a map could see through by observing the proximity of NK to both the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea.
An additional problem with her logic is her statement that an ssbn is undetectable until it “returns to port.” We have known for at least 30 years that a sub-launched missle immediately gives away the submarine’s position and since they can only fire one at a time a sub can only get of maybe as many as a half dozen before an incoming nuc takes out the sub. (It can’t move fast enough to get away) Why have a boat with 90 ssbnms ?
Your most important subject Dan. Thank you. Clockwork Orange force this message into the ears and eyes of all the people foaming at the mouth for a war they can't even imagine.
The authro's supposition that an American counter attack on North Korean would require an ICBM and not simply a sub based launch from the pacific so as to antagonize Russia seems like a end of the spectrum poor choice for the US president who by the author's own admission has a menu of retaliator options available to him. While it may make for a impactful story telling mechanism how many sub-optimal choices does the author really need to string together in order to make the book work, as if real nuclear launches aren't bad enough.
Indeed. She had so many issues I started making a post to list them but had to give up half way through the video so I didn't end up writing a book of my own.

Hey dan i have listened to you for years and was wondering, is there a way to get some of your old shows . Like wrath of the khans or blueprints for Armageddon, or even prophets of doom . Cause its enjoyable to go back a relisten to them .
I read Nuclear War: A Scenario in one sitting after listening to this. Incredible and terrifying book. There's a couple 'just-so' moments that ensure that the situation continuously worsens that do not feel entirely plausible, but the idea that the fate of the entire world can rest on, say, whether or not the President of the United States can get in contact with the President of Russia in the next ten minutes, is utterly terrifying.
Mr. Carlin ,irrespective of the topic and whether a deep dive or addendum you could provide 75 hours of content because it's absolutely wonderful . Thanks ever much
Recently I watched a lecture series on Prime about pre-Inca cultures in the Andes. It described an ancient urban culture that lasted a couple thousand years. The amazing thing was that there were no defensive walls around the cities, and no evidence of warfare. It was the most hopeful thing I have ever heard
Should it be? Given that those people were wiped out by the ruthless, inhumane actions of our current over-seers perhaps you should rethink what about it is so inspiring to you
Personally I think it would take more than just an absence of evidence of warfare to support the notion of an entire civilization was completely without it. It's a bit like telling me there's no evidence that they spoke, I think it's still a much safer bet that they did. We are almost certainly the least violent, most politically unified human beings in the history of the world, unless the Atlantians show up. If there are conditions in which human beings can live peaceably we are much closer to those conditions than ever we have been. I think we easily beat any of our ancestors in regards to any metrics that I would imagine make peace easier, extreme material abundance, highly unified and stable political units on a scale our ancestors couldn't imagine, relatively clear lines of authority, unprecedented cultural exchange, mutual respect and knowledge, technologies of communication that allow people across the planet to communicate. Yet we still have wars, so I'd say a bunch of dudes who can't just call the police when someone is bothering them probably fought quite a bit more.
Yes, it does take more than an absence of evidence to determine whether this culture had no warfare. I would recommend the lecture series because it was very convincing. I'm 62, and believed that war is the human condition. That is why I was so impressed

There are some criticisms you could lay on the author about technical aspects of her scenario, plenty of people have mentioned it in the comments so I'm not going to reiterate, I would caution them to remember though that the igniter of this whole scenario, The Bolt out of the Blue attack is not in debate, that is a scenario that can happen, I would also remind the critics that the ICBM response might be technically a suboptimal response but with a decision window under 10 minutes, it's not a hard stretch to imagine a sub optimal response being ordered. Change the scenario around as much as you want the primary statement the scenario is trying to make stands, We still exist in an Era of extreme risk from nuclear weapons. I think the wierd hostility against somone for being a journalist as if somehow being that profession justifies dismissing legitimate concerns is the actions of very immature minds.
As a wise man once answered an alomst tone-deaf question on facebook (ikr): What would you do if Putin would decide to nuclear attack your country? "I'd try to be as close as possible to the bomb blast." PS: truly horrific scenarios - good job. Cheers!
I love Dan's stuff. Supernova in the far east was spectacular. But on this topic I have to say I have significant issues. The authors opening sentence gave me concern, and then throughout her discussion it was only confirmed. In her opening I had hoped that her reference to saber rattling was the lead in to what deterrence is and how nuclear weapons play into that. But no. While she touched the topic tangentially there really was no solid addressing of the topic. This really became evident when talking about the number of bombs created. Anyone who is truly briefed on the topic, as she claims to have be, would fully understand the numbers aspect. The short summary of this is: A nuclear war, whether life ending or not, is still a war. Therefore the US and Soviet union both created enough bombs to destroy the targets they deemed necessary to win the war. She speaks with a lot of dramatic language but lacks a lot of the knowledge one would expect for someone who has thoroughly researched the topic. Case in point. She is in awe about the bomb design where a fission bomb is used to initiate the hydrogen bomb and that this is somehow significant. The kilo/mega ton numbers do all of that without the dramatics around design. The reality is the fission bomb is the spark plug and is unrelated, more or less, to the magnitude of the hydrogen bomb. She was right about man and machines failing. That is the key and scariest part of the nuclear situation. Sadly, she fails to mention that we used to think nuclear wars could be won, but does not mention the absolutely crucial details that Russia STILL DOES. They have extensive bunkers and a plan to do a first strike which has become more enticing to them since they have the hypersonic missiles. They only need a reason. This is why the approach the US and Nato have taken with Ukraine is utter insanity. We keep poking the bear in the eye, at some point they are going to take a swipe in return. Overall she seems to have talked to so many experts but missed so many critical details. Dan asked some really good questions but honestly I'm not impressed with her answers. Granted I'm a little more up to speed than most on these issues but still she missed major points that many people understand. For instance, the 6 minute window to issue the launch order. That is incorrect. That time is not about deciding whether you are willing to launch. That decision is made when you become president and are briefed on the nuclear procedures. Those 6 minutes are about determining if the situation is real etc. Next she talks about launching missiles over Russia to deal with North Korea. This was incredulous giving she had just talked about submarines. We have boomers positioned near North Korea since Eastern Russia is a target and we would not risk starting a war with Russia by shooting over them when we have a sub sitting within a few hundred miles that could do the job without risking a confrontation with Russia or China. Over and over and over she misses the mark. The horrors or nuclear war are real, the threat of war is real, all of that is true, but this authors interpretation is significantly off base in so many key ways. I'm half way through the video and have to quit or this summary will become a book. Overall, I'm not seeing value in this book if it has the same inaccuracies as her interview.
This woman is a charlatan on the topic. She hammers home already known and understood fears like they are revelatory new information for society to digest. Realistically, it's to sell some books.
@nickfrom1228 “the approach the us and nato have taken with Ukraine is utter insanity.” This is a remarkable level of cowardice. Let me ask you, why was Ukraine a red line but Finland was not? Your yellow belly is showing
Gwynne Dyer, Dan Carlin, and now welcome Annie Jacobsen (I recently only discovered her on Lex Fridman’s podcast) to my short list of favorite voices on human conflict history and journalism. I tore through her new book in a day…frustrating and depressing but damn is it a brilliant page turner.
I've worked with nuclear weapons for most of my life, from my time in the air force through my time at Sandia. And the EMP part of the horror show is in fact the first act. When the soviet union went belly up their nuclear doctrine was leaked and their strategy was broken into 4 parts. Part 1 was to detonate several medium yield weapons at about the altitude of the ISS over the continental US, which would devastate everything from the grid to communications, followed by all the strategic targets, command and control, and the population centers

It's pure insanity that we all live under this sword of damocles and we all just go to school and take the kids to soccer like 3/4ths of the human population couldn't just disappear. Nuclear powers should be giving each other a wide berth, but instead we are fighting a proxy war in Ukraine. Anyway the book is honestly wild and fantastic. Cannot recommend it enough.

Was pulling my hair out throughout this conversation. Thanks for writing this comment.
Didn’t like it when she made up stuff on Joe rogans podcast. Not a real historian Dan even said she’s for the dramatics
This woman is a charlatan on the topic. She hammers home already known and understood fears like they are revelatory new information for society to digest. Realistically, it's to sell some books.
I only made it thru about 30 minutes of her 3 hrs interview ok Lex Friedman for many of the reasons you've listed.
@nickfrom1228 “the approach the us and nato have taken with Ukraine is utter insanity.”
This is a remarkable level of cowardice.
Let me ask you, why was Ukraine a red line but Finland was not? Your yellow belly is showing
Annie’s operation paper clip book is one of my personal favorites
Gwynne Dyer, Dan Carlin, and now welcome Annie Jacobsen (I recently only discovered her on Lex Fridman’s podcast) to my short list of favorite voices on human conflict history and journalism. I tore through her new book in a day…frustrating and depressing but damn is it a brilliant page turner.
An hour ? Now THAT is a „blitz”
With such dirt poor leadership in the modern world the amount of doomsday weapons laying around is just crazy.
Love you and the team, Dan
This is a great interview
I've worked with nuclear weapons for most of my life, from my time in the air force through my time at Sandia. And the EMP part of the horror show is in fact the first act. When the soviet union went belly up their nuclear doctrine was leaked and their strategy was broken into 4 parts. Part 1 was to detonate several medium yield weapons at about the altitude of the ISS over the continental US, which would devastate everything from the grid to communications, followed by all the strategic targets, command and control, and the population centers
She's great. Very much on point
You got a huge shout out from Elon Dan. Baller!
Just watched fallout and this drops. Great talk.
As always, the best of the best
Still waiting for the Dan Carlin takes on the Thirty Years War and the Crimean War.
Christmas came early 🙌🙌
Love Annie’s voice
Good to be informed Thank you
Her book was awesome in the way that awe is
Dude i need a 4hr podcast minimum. You are just teasing with these hour episodes. Stop it.
4-12hrs, that's what i need.
Great show! Never gonna have a light hearted episode are we? Ah that’s what’s the Germany WW1 VS Germany WW2 vid. Be safe y’all can’t wait for the next show!
Great show.
Cheers!
Every new Hard Core History comes like the first gulp of water to thirsty man.
Nice one Dan
I bet the Coast Gaurd felt really left out...
Excellent talk!
Great stuff like always
WhoopWhoop!! My day just got a lot better! Anyone know approximately when the next Hardcore is going to be released?
Annie Jacobsen made a fool of herself on JRE, hope her book on nukes is better than her work on operation paperclip
Great timing putting this book out in 2024 during the Biden Administration when everyone is staring at the TV waiting for nuclear Holocaust
Look at the colossal threat quietly standing just off stage and effectively looming over us.
Now. Look at the individuals who can influence or control the unleashing of these horrors:
....ButcherBiden
....Antony Blinken
....the orange ape
....Lloyd Austin
.....Tillerson
.....Pompeo
....Bibi Netanyahu
....Kim Jung IL
....the amorphous, faceless, little known leadership at NATO
Anyone have any confidence in our longevity ?
Great show
Got this audio book.
Not a fan of this book from her but it opened my eyes to her other work and her book on the CIA is fantastic!
Victoria Newland and Chrystia Freeland come to mind 1 minute in.
Sewage drenched leadership...and they can influence a button pusher.
You can find a lot of truth written within fiction too, Dan. Just got to find the right authors.
What are some examples?
@@SnakeBitesApe Huxley, Orwell, Vonnegut, Hesse, Joyce, Hemingway, Dostoyevsky, Steinbeck, Kerouac, Lovecraft, Kafka, Asimov, Bradbury, Tolkien, George R. Stewart, Neal Stephenson, Anthony Burgess, Dan Simmons, Colin Wilson, Michael Talbot, Herbert, Heinlein, Philip K. Dick (and a ton of other vintage sci fi).
@@wileyschmitt no, I mean what is an actual example of truth that you found in one of those authors works of fiction? Just curious.
@@SnakeBitesApe Many fictional stories take place in our world, so there are often facts and real world accounts that are mentioned in most of those stories, and some are often littered with info and history that authors share with their readers, along with realities and circumstances of the times that younger readers can learn about and/or imagine more clearly despite their ignorance of such things by not having been a part of that era.
@@wileyschmitt love that. What is your specific favorite? What truth did you learn?
Oh that the “you will have to read it in my book” lady from JRE 😅
Two of my favorite history junkies in a conversation about nuclear peril?! Oh, yes, please.
DC and AJ in the same podcast, what could be better.
Just reading the title this morning lets go
