Wow, I need to pick one of those up but... every single time I mod a GBC with the latest & greatest screen mod, a new better one comes out lol. Great video Joe!
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! Just finished installing mine, following behind you, and all turned out great! First time soldering anything for me.
Can't turn around for five minutes without a new screen dropping haha. What will they think of next! It's seriously exciting. Great mod and great video Joe!
Just finished mine, used exactly the same parts as you, thanks, it looks awesome! Anyway, I did not solder the wires the same as you did, but rather tuck them in the little 2-side holes on the cartridge's side so that they pop up on the other side, that way it is simpler to solder and looks more robust.
Great video as always! The way I remember which way the IR cover goes in, is if it’s placed in before the motherboard, it has room for the LEDs to not bump their heads on the way in (and if it was upside down, that little ledge would be almost in the way). That’s the only useful thing I’ve ever come up with on my own haha
Mate, thanks for that. I was looking for a tutorial and not only yours is excellent, but you matched my design choice for the DMG model and the original been that kind of green. Well done - but I did not do any soldering, and the screen works fine - can change brigthess but I'm okay with that. Really easy mod.
I love this screen, i was able to easily install it and it looks fantastic. I did have a Benvenn screen but it was damaged and I recieved No assistance from that guy, but this thing is not only easily to build but also WAY better!
Just did this mod myself. Noticed the touch sensor for the screen will work as is when tucked into the top. I think the orange pad was meant for relocating the sensor.
Thanks for this video Joe. I did exactly the same as you did, modding a purple game boy color to a dmg version with the same back lit screen, power regulator and speaker. I've not soldered since school 20 years ago. Bought all the bits from zedlabz and the same soldering iron you use. Also watched your soldering vid which was really helpful and got myself some liquid flux and learnt about that. Got myself an alarmclock kit to practice and then moved onto the game boy. Managed it first time no problem and its been perfect. I don't think I would have attempted it without your vid so thank you. Would like to source a GBA next and mod that
Just a heads up. The new 'touch' sensor looks to be built into the ribbon cable for the V2. You don't need to add the additional 'touch sensor' shown at 18:15
Right now they’re having some quality issues with the screen so places are pulling them off sale until it is fixed. Why is because numerous laminated screens are delaminating, black and grey are replaced with a cheap looking blue, the screen can burn itself out when there is all black on the screen, and specifically in the bottom left corner is a little patch of dead purple pixels. Edit: for the U.S versions specifically. Funnyplaying doesn’t know why these issues are happening but they are working on it.
I did this mod twice, first time with a transparent shell and there is light bleed up top out of the shell, then I built with this DMG style case and it's much cleaner. My two cents but if you do this, choose a non translucent case.
Point 3:50 WHERE did you buy those original DMG-style Start/Select buttons from?! I cannot find them anywhere for the GBC😭 I *could* make them myself by casting the originals, but it's a ton of messy work😒 Especially frustrating in trying to match the grey to original DMGs🥵
I tried to follow your guide but destroyed my GBC because I am not the best at soldering. I couldn't get the stupid little holes to fill with solder and now the start and select buttons do not work. I'm sad...
My start/select don't work for the color changing or screen alterations... they work in games but not for the lcd mod... everything is tinned and connected to the board/ribbon but not working... I spent hours on this thing and it's not working...
Brilliant video! Very clear I’ve got mine on the way. Can I ask, have you put the new capacitor in this one? I’ve also ordered a retrosix clean power regulator, as I was told LPS put a lot of strain on GBC. I see you haven’t used one, Do you think that mod really necessary?
I don't use R6 products but I did do the capacitor mod on this one and it works well from what I can tell; no power issues like I had with the Game Boy Pocket 😊
@@JoeBleeps great! I did another small mod on my sons GBC with new buttons and rubbers and discovered that on Zelda LA the DPad would sometimes make Link disappear due to the nub being short on the newer Dpads. Are the Funnyplaying buttons more accurate to the original ones?
How has this mod been keeping up for you? Have you run into any problems long-term? I'm interested in modding a Gameboy like this, but I'm scared about the long term quality of this mod. Also how long is the battery life using AA batteries?
Decent alkaline AAs last well and I usually have the 2450 mAh IKEA rechargeable batteries in there, they last really well. Long term, it's as good as day one, a really awesome console with a fantastic screen
Hey Joe, great vid. I don't have the tools to solder atm, but am looking to get a soldering station in the coming weeks or months. If you just drop the screen in and don't solder, what color is the logo at the bottom by default?
@@JoeBleeps Thanks! I did actually delve into a Game Boy discord server and seemingly some of the newer versions actually now have full functionality without the need to solder, with the user having the ability to alter lights etc with just the integrated touch sensor. Similar to their new GBA kit. I can only hope they do a laminated kit for the pocket soon as that’s my favourite form factor for the Game Boy.
Hi Joe, was wondering can I get the q5 screen ips that doesn’t have the light up logo, and touch sensor, I would like to just mod the screen and shell replacement through zed labs
Hi Joe can I ask where you got the knife, I use the same one for work in blue but the other 5 guys have the same. I would love a different colour one so I can tell which is mine
Now that's a good question! I've had it for years and can't remember, but it's the retractable Swann-Morton knife and I wouldn't be without it. Excellent piece of kit. I'm sure you'll find it if you search for that
followed your tutorial great vid, man those are some tiny solder points!! is there a way to remove the slight hum in the sound? i can only really hear it from headphones but i would like to remove it if possible and also is there a way to make the gameboy color a tad louder if possible minus the hum? and will that hum cause a speaker faliur or any damage?
I don't know of a way to address this specific hum but there are a few noise reduction mods out there for Game Boy Color. I don't expect it will cause any damage to the speaker though.
Having just ordered this kit from Zedlabz, and I'm hoping I get the touch sensor ribbon like you did, rather than the one pictured on the site. I had that in an older version of this kit (bought elsewhere), and because of the way you have to twist the ribbon cable to install it, mine got damaged and stopped working eventually
Fantastic video! Inspired me to buy a GBC. This was a fun build. I got it all back together, but I can’t get the color logo to change. I can toggle between the Game Boy and Color but can’t seem to use start or select to change the color for some reason. Do you think it’s a bad connection at a solder point, or perhaps I held the heat too long on the ribbon? It doesn’t appear to be damaged, but never know. I’m not the greatest at soldering. I did get the touch sensor working fine, and am able to hold start/select to get toggle through the settings, just can’t change the color for some reason. Any help is appreciated. Thanks :)
I am sure your ribbon will be fine, looks like an issue with the connection on the start/select wires though. Does start and select work okay when playing games?
@@JoeBleeps I’ll make sure, but testing last night yeah they worked. :) you think I should check start select at the mother board? I think I connected them at a different place than you did. Thanks again for the great tutorial! Subscribed!
Yes, you need to solder at least one wire to power switch c point in order to test it before mounting everything together, however there is similar ips screen mod which does not require soldering at all and works via default power delivery of GB, it is “one chip” ips v2, it uses the same ips panel, but with different circuit board
Hey just finished mine yesterday it works great, but now it does not let me enter the setting to change the logo position and color have you seen this issue at all?
One thing I have found is that if the contacts on the start and select aren't super clean, it may not work. Also the original start/select pads tend to work better so if you have new ones maybe try swapping back. It does adjust with those buttons right? It's a while since I built this one 😅
Hey thanks for the reply! I really appreciate it. Turned out to be just a poor soldering job on my part and one of the wires came completely unattached! Opened her back up and she is back to working beautifully. This video really helped me build this one and was my first ever mod so thanks so much! You’re awesome!
