I laughed so hard when you spoke too soon about how Henry's tankers and dynamite didnt explod until now 4:45 . This was a good parody of classic Thomas the way Late Night Show did, it almost looks like a YTP from Hour of Poop. Good reaction Joe.
On one hand, I love the model work. On the other hand, I hate the fact they were pushing the narrative that “Henry died in the tunnel“. I’d give the short itself a 9 out of 10 (it uses American rolling stock, but that’s understandable. They clearly use the Lionel as a basis.) I think they did great model work for a parody. I just really wish media sites outside of the Thomas fandom would do their research when talking about the sad story of Henry
3:58 yes These things can indeed happen. Especially with the journal boxes when they would overheat and catch fire. This was phased out with roller bearings making Modern Hotboxes a result of human error and not the axle aging by itself. I feel this was a nod to East Palestine since a doorbell camera caught flames coming out one of the freight tankers right before the derailment!
The thing to understand is that this skit is basically a 5-minute summary of the previous 25-minute monologue about the state of the American freight rail system. I.e. everything thing that happened, every line that was spoken, actually happened in real life in America. Even the little girl crawling under a train!
4:05 yes, a hot axlebox can happen when grease or oil is not topped up so the oil between the axle and the wheel spindle would run out and resulting in the start of metal on metal rubbing together. Even on miniature trains, let alone the full sized ones. We top up the grease on our carriages with a grease gun into a metal slot with a plastic cover called a grease nipple, at the start of the season, and half way through. Of course, checking for hot boxes if we think one is rubbing low.
John Oliver sounds like he'll make a good narrator for a reboot of Thomas. Maybe for the new movie that's coming out by Mattel. He sounds like Micheal Angelis.
Well I certainly wasn't expecting anything like this come out of a late night show or anything but this was well done! LOL! Certainly felt like something from the classics!
It is possible for bearings to overheat, tho it is rare for it to on modern cars. But when it does happen, it can risk derailing if an overheated bearing causes the axel to come loose. You’ll get the context when you watch the entire John Oliver episode.
Me and my mom watched this the other night and afterwards I was wondering if you caught wind of this. Glad you got to see it. This looks like something Robot Chicken would make. And yes a trains wheel can get hot to the point where the bearings within can melt. Mechanical problems like that are usually checked before a train heads out on its journey.
I love how this entire episode was just supposed to be a call-out to the crap that modern railroads are doing right now. I’m not even upset about all the misconceptions because this was genuinely funny.
Yes, Axels can overheat on trains. One way this happens is if the brakes stick as the train is moving. Trackside Defect detectors can monitor axel temperatures as the train rolls by. If the detector finds a hot axel. It will broadcast a warning to the crew over the radio and tell them which axel it is on their train.
The fact that they made a fully functional O gauge henry, eye mechanisms and all, just for this one skit, is amazing to me. It even looks leagues better than any of the shit the actual Lionel puts out for their Thomas range.
To answer your question about the overheating wheel yes . Its a form of breaks being on and the axle and wheel start over heating on tanker cars this is very dangerous indeed Henry is lucky to be alive after all this
Btw the axle would heat up on a train car without grease unless said axle had roller bearings (Edit) Actually even roller bearings would need grease and what that axle had was a hot box
Hey you took my suggestion!! The full episode, actually mentioned the original Sad Story of Henry. You should see John Oliver’s reaction to that episode. However, the rest of the episode was about the problems with freight train Saftey today.
This parody was hilarious! There's a lot of extra context that you sorta missed out on since you only watched the parody, so I recommend you watch the full episode about Freight Trains that John Oliver did.
Im so grateful you made this video joe, i would have never knew this existed cuz the uploader to the video has exluded access to those who live in the UK.
So for those who haven’t seen John Oliver, these “jokes” in this skit are based on things in real life. Like how trains keep getting longer to be more “efficient,” to a point where kids will sometimes need to crawl under a train to go to school, and how the staff is underpaid and understaffed, sometimes with only one or two people moaning a train with hundreds of cars. These are real problems shown in a humorous light, which is what John Oliver does in a lot of his shows.
Wheels don’t actually overheat. The only time they overheat is when the brakes are left on, which is called a hotbox. A hotbox is win. A Freight car’s brakes are locked on to a set of wheels and when it’s left like that smoke begins pouring from underneath the car and it can break, and eventually derail the train this only occurs while a train is Rolling
Looking at the map and the Explosion. It’s safe to say that The little western,Minature Railway and tidmouth station and yard was completely destroyed. So I think… the death toll for the engines are… Duck,Oliver,Donald and Douglas(if they were at that part of the island at the time),Mike,Rex,Bert,Jock, the diesels of the miniature railway(if they exist in this universe) and MAYBE Toby and Percy(if the Branchline sheds are at tidmouth in this universe)so counting ALL the engines in total are 13 Deaths. Unless there were some more there. IDK.
So to answer your question on if wheels on cars can overheat, yes they can if they go too long without maintenance which is otherwise called “Hotboxes”
@@StephentrainboyRailfanbrony if Lionel are able to build these thomas and friends but better then those previous cursed ones I probably purchase Gordon, Henry and also other classic thomas and friends characters build by Lionel but better. I'm not sure they will be but I'm just reading your comment and I totally agreed.
Train wheels can overheat only if the brakes on the cars are left on for a litle bit. This is known on the railroad as a "hotbox" (pls correct me if im wrong) Also this is very funny.
To awnser your question about overheating wheels yes it can just not to the wheel it self but to the bogie its or that part of the wheel anyway its called a hot box and it can actually cause fires
Even though this is a parody and is meant to be inaccurate to the Thomas stories in a funny way, they gave more love to this than all the other recent stuff we've had so honestly I can't even complain
You really should watch the whole segment John Oliver did on freight trains, this parody came at the end and it was poignant because it was highlighting everything discussed about everything wrong with the modern railroads today, owing to Precision Scheduled Railroading.
The Whole thing about Engineers not having enough time To inspect trains Is real With Railroad companies That use PSR (Precision Scheduled Railroading)
Oh I can tell this is a good YTP video of Thomas about Henry and after the crash will there goes the hole damn town and the children's hospital is on fire and I wish that Henry had said damn

I like the parody and I think it’s nice but the ending where it’s assumed Henry died in the tunnel is a bit annoying! At least the models and voice acting was pretty good! Edit: Henry in the tunnel bit was probably made a joke of how Henry died in a tunnel but still it is annoying
the engineer for a train company like north folk southern or conrail or union pacific have to do a safety check before they depart an they get a list of all the stuff there hauling
And also out there they give rail car less time to check for problems since they are doing less trains are becoming more dangerous since they are not being checked for a while so they become form freight trains to bomb trains since freight trains deliver almost all of our cargo
This skit portrays all of the severe problems with Hunter Harrison's economic method: precision-scheduled railroading. It is exaggerated a bit (of course) but not too far off from the truth. There was even one clip from shortly after the Palestine wreck in which one reporter was shocked that only two crew members monitor an entire train, only to have railroads propose that there should only be one crew member instead as a cost-cutting measure.
Drivr3joe, I miss your Thomas YTP’s. When can you make more. Besides, you can make plenty more videos for monetizing, you don’t need your YTP’s to be monetized.
I haven't seen a model-styled skit this hilarious since Robot Chicken.
Hello again, Victor! I think the Sad Tale of Henry the Engine would be a great idea for a Sodor Short! 😂🤣
It’s Victor Tanzig!

I think they were making fun of the narrative.
They were making fun of the terrible conditions in modern railways

A perfect commentary on American freight railway companies and their criminal negligence.
I loved this when I stumbled across it. Captures that classic Thomas feel, and I love how they went all out with the models.

John Oliver is always a delight. This is by far my favorite Thomas parody.
Same
He used to be a delight. Then he became stale then the occasional shill.

That wasn't John, that was Matt Barry
Why is this more accurate than anything the actual Thomas and Friends franchise has given us these past few years?
Because all of you are dickheads.
John Oliver must love the Classic era of Thomas

On a final note a wheel falling off is worse case scenario.
Yes the wheels do over heat often on the older carts. But they don't normally explode half a island...
I never work on the railroad but as a railfan these events in the short are all true 🤣
4:15 - 4:25 Big Strong Henry but more darker
