This movie was based on a legend. You see in the early 1900s Russia was ruled by this king named Nicholas II. He had a wife and 4 daughters and a son. However in 1917 the people of Russia got tired of Nicholas II and his family and so they arrested them and executed them. But the body of the youngest daughter, Anastasia in that time was never found. Then a few years later a woman named Anna Anderson came forward and said that she was Anastasia. Some relatives of Nicholas II believed her, others didn't. She spend her whole claiming that she was Anastasia. She died in 1984 but years later they did a DNA test on her and determined that she was not related to Nicholas II and therefore she was not Anastasia. Then in 2007 Anastasia's skeleton was found and it confirmed that she died in 1917 with the rest of her family, and all those legends that she survived were just legends.
So yeah. This movie has sure aged and now feels kind of bad taste.

Fun fact about music and memory: music is stored in a completely different part of the brain than where it stores most memories. I work in a memory care unit at an assisted living facility, and our patients with dementia almost always remember the lyrics to their favorite songs, even if they've forgotten most other things. We have used music to help pull some residents out of panic moments when they can't remember anything else, and it helps to ground them. We also use music to help them remember things about their daily routines. Music is very powerful when it comes to memory! I love how they actually incorporated this when it comes to Anastasia's memory. She remembers her grandmother's song, she remembers the smells, and THEN she remembers everything she's forgotten. Very powerful!

Rasputin was actually a close friend of the family (he was a pretty corrupt holy man, with way too much political influence, but he was good at helping Alexei (who was pretty sickly at times), so the family trusted him. He was one of the many reasons they were unpopular). Anyway, in 1917, the communist revolution happened. The saddest thing is that the family were not really awful rulers (besides the dealings with Rasputin). The queen and several of her daughters served as nurses during the war. However the political environment changed. The family in fact lived for several years under house arrest while they tried to figure out what to do with them. The fact that they ended up carrying out the murder in the night and tried so hard to cover it up means that they did know what they were doing wasn't right.

Also this movie is a very inaccurate telling of history, the Russian revolution was actually very peaceful and the Romanov's were first kept in a home left to luxury, the Tsar only had to abdicate the throne and be a rich dude, but unfortunately the guards got drunk and executed them without orders (it is unclear if Lenin ordered them to be executed or not). I'm not defending the murder of the kids cause they had no power but lmao the Tsar and his wife were not innocent just because they were not movie villains, they were very very bad.

One of the reasons I love English is because you get to see the full versions of Russian names being used a lot more often and because it's English it makes them sound fancy and extra pretty

12:37 First sign that that was a dream - Alexei would never have been allowed to do that. Don't know if it's a case of Anastasia not having her full memories back or the writers not doing their research but Alexei was born with haemophilia, he could never do something like jump from a great high or run where he'd risk bleeding on the outside or the inside. There was no cure or treatment for it then and likely not now. He bleeds excessively when he cuts himself, his blood won't clot, but the most dangerous thing is when he bleeds inside, he'd never be allowed to do anything like what he was doing in this dream. THat's why they kept Rasputin at court for so long, he seemed to be able to cure it or at least stop it from becoming too serious. They remembered it in the stage musical adaption, he fell at the ball scene and everyone went quiet.

'Why is the little boy walking like that?' - Alexei (Anastacia's brother) suffered from Hemophilia that impairs the body's ability to make blood clots, a process needed to stop bleeding. He was often quite sick and weak because of it. Rasputin actually was hired to treat him since he was pretending to be a sort of healer and the Tsar and Tsarina believed he was capable of helping Alexei. Their association with Rasputin was one of many, many issues that turned the people against them since Rasputin was ... well, he was a character ...
'So the grandma is still alive' - yes, she was the only one from the core family who managed to flee. She was born a princess of Denmark and fled back to Denmark, where she was safe from the Russian Revolution. Also, since she was a princess of Denmark she married into the family, so while yeah, she used the Romanov name, she wasn't Romanov by 'blood' so to speak.
Meeting fake Anastacia's - this did happen, there were at least one case of a woman pretending to be Anastacia and even convincing some people who knew the real Anastacia. Of course, these incidents and this movie all happened before Anastacia and Alexei's bones were found and it was finally official that Anastacia indeed did die with her family and never escaped.
Rasputin - this dude's a freaking ride. He was known for like crazy sex parties, rumored to have an affair with the tsarina (Which was more than likely not true), some believed he knew magic and the story of his death is absolutely insane xD He was poisoned, shot and still lived long enough to move when his murderers threw him in the river.

In case you didn’t know, in the real Russian Revolution all the children of the Tsar where shot (but Anastasia was actually an adult at the time as well as her sisters, only her brother was a child). But there was an impostor later on who claimed to be a real Anastasia and it was a big story for a long time. In 50s there was movie made starring Ingrid Bergman (she won her second Oscar for it) that is in many ways inspired by the tale of the imposter and that movie was inspiration for this movie. I don’t think until 90s DNA tests certainly proved that the woman was an imposter and Anastasia was shot with her siblings.
I really like the movie but it’s kind of insensitive thing to make a movie out of. The same with the Titanic animated movies. It’s not like these events were so long ago, in 90s when they were made there was still many people alive from the era.

If you were wondering why the Prince was walking so funny during the song sequence, it was probably an animation error. But it could also be a shout out to history, Alexei Romanov, the prince from her memories was a hemophiliac and a year before the Royal family was wiped out he had some kind of bleeding into his stomach that left him maimed.
The real Anastasia Romanov was genuinely believed missing for something like ninety years and people always wanted to believe she survived.
Turns out she was killed with the rest of her family but her body was dumped in a different location.
Lenin had them all annihilated to avoid anyone using them as a rallying cry to around which people could build a rebellion against him. He was the real villain not some crazy mountain shaman.

The movie is actually based on the real story of the Romanovs. Anastasia's story line is based on how many people believe Alexi(her brother) escaped but they made it Anastasia so they could have a romance. Rasputin was a mystic and they originally were friends with Rasputin cuz he helped Alexi during his bleeding spells, but then he got into some bad things so they banished him - hence why he was mad.

6:05 - the reason the little boy walked like that because he was the youngest son of the royal family , Alexei Romanov, who had a blood disease. He was probably bandaged all over his body under that clothes because even a little injury could be fatal for a person with hemophilia

If you ever go down the Romanov rabbit hole - oh my you’ll be addicted - so many interesting details. Also, there’s a book “Anastasia the Last Grand Duchess” it’s her diary and she details everything from when she got to when they had to hide up until the night she and her family were murdered. There is pictures in there if the places and a picture of her wearing that gold dress with sash that she was wearing when she came back to grandma. Such a beautiful book.

I legit binge-watched this and ‘The Black Cauldron’ every single day after school when I was a kid. And it’s been so long since I watched them last, this was such a nice burst of serotonin. Bless.

Dude this. After I found this video I went back and watched Anastasia again for the first time in almost a decade and I was taken right back to the comfort I felt watching it over and over again as a kid. Definitely started putting this on while I’m going to sleep for the past few evenings. I’m 28 years old. 😂
