  • How to replace the keyboard of an asus n551-jb (and probably other types of the n551 series) ,
These keyboards are "welded"together on the keyboard cover, .
Replacement cover plus keyboard costs around 120euros (dollars?!) .
on ebay you can find the keyboard much cheaper , but you have to put some time in it to replace it ... but its totally doable .

This video has been extremely helpful. Give it a 👍
I did a couple of things differently, though.
    1. 4:25 no need to connect the HDD. Without it, it would boot to the BIOS, but there you can try the keyboard (for example, try to set up a new user/admin password. Maybe don't confirm it!). You won't be able to check _all_ the keys, but more than enough.
    2. 7:31 I kept the power socket on the chassis - you can slide the connector attached to the mobo by using a small screwdriver and pushing out the small plastic box on the connector.
    3. 8:45 I didn't have a hot-air gun, so I used a soldering iron instead. Now, _that is not the proper tool_ so take precautions:
3.1. *Set it up at the lowest temperature possible.* Teije here used air at 215 °C, which means the plastic pins will melt at something like 150 °C. Your soldering iron will do more than that.
3.2. Use a fan to remove plastic fumes from under your nose. They're toxic. And clean the iron tip often.
3.3. Even if you manage to mold the pin caps into tiny tips, many pins won't survive the cover extraction anyway. Don't worry and use some cyanoacrylate (not sure what Teije used) during reassembly.
3.4. Maybe don't use an expensive soldering iron. I won't be responsible if the plastic will ruin the iron tip. (Actually I won't be responsible for _any_ of the suggestions I'm giving.)
    4. Turned off the music and used my own. Sorry man 🤣
Every other step is pretty much necessary, so follow the instruction as closely as possible.
Except for the hinge covers, I didn't check if removing them was actually needed.
But man, looks like Asus _really_ doesn't want people to fix their own keyboard!
P.S.: There's a chance that plastic is actually ABS, so if you happen to have one of those "3D pens" maybe you'll have the perfect tool to reshape the pin caps! 😆 (I doubt it'll work, though.)

Hi! I wanted to really thank you. After 2 IT services rejecting to do this job I had to decide to do it all by myself. The replace keyboard was surprisingly cheap and your video was of invaluable help. Although I removed the welds with a soldering station and then applied double sided tape to secure the keyboard (who cares about plastic welding?). Greetings from Argentina!

I was almost in the same situation as you , complete replacement of antopcover costing + 100euro or diy for 20 euro's ...
Because i couldnt find a complete video about the process for this model, i made this one.

Thank you very much for this video. I personally used a soldering machine to remove the plastic rivets. Then I use a wire for 3D printing to create the new caps. All in all everything works well.

thanks. Stumbled on your video after i had to open my asus to fix an internal screw hole. These laptops where a real bargain. after all these years and some deal of harsh treatment, some plastic supports failed. i opened it up and used this chance to give it a deep cleanse, and now it's as good as new (apart from a few plastic parts). I have changed plenty of desktop pcs in the mean time, but i am really attached to this laptop. I brought it with me on many journeys, and to this day there's little it can't handle. I even manajed to edit some short 4k videos with premiere a couple of years ago. Shortly after i switched it to linux and i see no reason to change this awesome pc for something new even if i could afford that, since it is still quick (finger crossed). I really hope i will never need what i learned from this video of yours, but nonetheless!

Thanks very much for sharing this info. I've never done this kind of thing before, and I was at the last step: removing the keyboard. And I thought: it can't be removed, it's attached with 'plastic things'. Now I know these are called 'plastic welds'. And that there is something like a 'micro blowdryer'. So without that, it probably can't be done I guess?

    • @teijekooijker3146
      @teijekooijker3146  5 лет назад

Not the official naming i think (plastic welds) . maybe with good glue you could put it together if you broken all those plastic pieces .

Hello, great videom I wish I have found this tutorial before went and atempt to open my pc (Asus N551JX, very similar with yours). The problem is when I tried to on I cut the ribbon cable of the backlight keyboard with an credit card (the thing I used to open up and separate the back cover to get access to the internal to proceed to clean). Now, all works, but I get no backlight on keyboard because of the damage flat ribbon cable (slightly cut), is this fixable without taking of/replace the keyboard, I mean, can this cable be "glued" back ?

Hello, thank you very much for this video. I am about to go rhrough the same procedure. But my hot air gun doesn't have such muzzle. How important is it to be preserve the plastic wields? Can I just use my soldering iron on low temperature? And maybe later secure the metal plate with glue or double-sided tape? Thanks once again for the video.

Hi. Thanks for the video! Do you know any tricks how to attach the metal placeholder to front cover? My cover was demaged so i had to buy new, and the new cover dont have these plasctics welds (almost all are broken).

in the proces i lost some tips of the plastic welds, and i used some "hard plastic glue" for it.
But the "spikes"where still there so i had something to glue it to, if those are gone i dont have an clue how to re-model them . there is an website who sells the frontcovers incl keyboard, but it has a higher price then just the keyboard ( ofcourse) .
for my type (the 551JB ) and (i assume ) your language it would be this one >> www.asusparts.eu/en/Asus-90NB05T1-R31RU0

The power button should be on the pin5 of the keyboard connector. I had to search it on a N551V. Connect it to ground for a moment to power the nb on. If the keyboard is bad the nb can't power on. The keyboard design is stupid, putting also the power button on it is even more stupid.

Thanks for sharing! I followed the instructions and may have damaged my audio: I don't get sound through speakers and through headphones it's very quiet and noisy (i.e. you can recognize what song is playing, but there is barely any sound). I rechecked the speaker connectors, but reattaching it makes no difference. Do you have any tips for troubleshooting?

Hey man. When you remove the motherboard looks very easy. When i try to do it i feel lot of resistence. I removed all the screws and eventi the cooling fan... It feels like the mobo is glued. Is it possibile?

    • @teijekooijker3146
      @teijekooijker3146  5 лет назад

I dont think its glued (pretty shure original it isnt) , maybe the I/O ports are stuck? maybe cable you misssed?

    • @MaxArt2501

I've met some resistance too. Try to slide it slightly inwards, the lift it and disconnect the flat cable underneath.
Small adjustments, don't force it (of course!), you will be able to remove it. Ciao!

I used "bison" hard plastic glue ( i live in the netherlands ) but think any glue that is working for ABS will work ( i believe thats the type of plastic). .
      tools:
      small head philips screwdriver
      some pry tools
and a (cheap) hot air station
flathead screwdriver to keep keyboardframe under tension when melting the tabs.
i believe thats it, it has been a while ago. maybe when you see the video closely you could figure it out.

I tried to keep the plastic tabs as good as possible , thats why i used that hot air station.

Maybe u could use an diffrent technique but i prefer this one.
