Rather, the reason why he preferred French over English was that the language used by the imperialist countries (USA & UK) was English. It is said that he speaks French for this reason. Another reason is that in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, the position of French literature among Turkish intellectuals was quite high.

@@sktw8905 Did you even read history? My ancestors fought against 7 countries in poverty, they didn't even have shoes to wear, women carried bullets to the front and how can you say that they are imperialists? And by the way, can you tell me a country that speaks Turkish even though it has no land connection to Turkey and they are not ethnically Turkish? I can tell you a lot of countries that are not ethnically European but speak French, English, Spanish, Portuguese. You are the real imperialist and you brazenly call us imperialists.

@@azaziel Please let me remind you that French has been the language used in all diplomatic exchanges during a period that lasted over 2 centuries (18th, 19th + early 20th). Back then, people who had the opportunity to learn foreign languages would choose French rather than English. So, it's no big surprise that Atatürk and the American ambassador have this conversation in French. Plus : President Atatürk was a man of culture and yes, he certainly had a preference for France.
