Amazing how you can play almost anything He’s ever made when you drop to D maj tuning. His thump just makes the sus and return chords. And his HEEL TO TOE STRUMMING. Wonder man,,,,,
Open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D) is what enabled him to use his left thumb like a quickly-movable capo. That goes back to when he first picked up a guitar, and tuned it to what sounded right to him. Someone here a year or so ago called it an "incorrevt technique," but it sure seemed to work for Richie. Likewise, Dolly Parton plays in open tunings and just barres everything. Then her long nails don't create any problem making chords.
He was a national treasure.
Thanks HomespunSamples for making and sharing this fabulous video with the one and only Richie Havens. Rest In Peace.
agreed, always thought how is he making that sound like a chord lol :} love his style
He was a very unique player. Sadly missed.

Rest in Peace Richie!
He has always had that very unique thumb style of playing..it worked for him. Sad to see Ritchie go.
Its actually bad incorrect style. But he did have a cool strumming style. For sure
What open tuning is he using?

His hands were too big for basic playing, chords and tuning. At least he was able to make some awesome adjustments.
