  • This video is my first "night lapse" since installing 2 new cameras designed to perform better in low light conditions than the GoPro I've used for years. Watch the same Timelapse from both cameras in this video, and let me know which camera (1 or 2) you think is "better" in the comments and why. I will reveal which camera is which in a later video showing how I tested these 2 models as well as several others. You can purchase the Wyze Cam v3 here using my affiliate link if interested: amzn.to/3XXX6gF

    By 6:00 PM on Sunday January 22nd, we had accumulated approx. 1" of snow and were still receiving a steady snowfall. I turned the heated driveway snowmelt system on around 6:00 PM. The snow continued off & on throughout the night.
    The snow continued until about 11:00 pm, and then completely stopped and the slab was able to begin drying. By 3:00 AM, on Monday January 23rd the slab was completely dry, however we received another brief snowfall preventing shutdown. By 5:30 AM the snowfall was over and the system was shut down.
    Hopefully you enjoy this video. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below, and remember to help me out by liking the video and subscribing if you’re not already by clicking here: / @deckerchristopherj

    The playlist will have all of my videos in the correct order form start to present, regardless of the date I uploaded them. It starts with how I designed the PEX and Snowmelt Loop Layout, shows the process of installing the actual heated concrete slab, demonstrates how I did the math to calculate the boiler and pump sizes, installation of all of the components, and ends with lots of time-lapse of the system melting snow. It also includes snowmelt system startup and shutdown videos, as well as walkthroughs of the mechanical room, continuous circulation design and electrical system.

    Sorry for the mistakes in the outro guys. It was definitely shut down on January 23rd, 2023, not 2022, and the cameras will be "revealed" in a future video. 😩 I do all of this RUclips stuff (editing, etc.) in the very little free time I have, after working a full-time job, and sometimes I don't catch things even after watching it several times before publishing. I will slow down and do a better final check in the future, I promise. Thanks!

    Both are very similar, 1 is a little better in quality but not as wide.
    If it's just looking for image quality, you could go either way. If price means anything, then the wyze is a great value.

    I liked camera 2. I thought the video quality was better, sharper. The colors were also well defined. I opened up a second window to watch them both side by side and, to me, camera 2 is far superior.
    Don't worry about the outro. Some of us, me and apparently you too, still use 2022 also. At least we recognize our mistakes and acknowledge them 🤣🤣

    Camera 1 was the best resolution and clarity, FYI it was clear enough to read the plates. Camera 2 has the better field of view and could work if I didn't need the resolution or the files sizes are too big to work with assuming the video files are smaller. But yeah, I'd go with camera 1 because of the resolution/clarity. Eagerly waiting for the reveal.

Now it looks like you have a good amount of external light for this test, I suspect with lower light levels and a person moving on the driveway we would see even more differences. Most of the higher priced cameras have numerous tuning parameters that you can adjust.

One advice is whichever one you choose just make sure it in the camera 2's position (lower) so that whole drive way is covered, might get a little snow from wind perhaps but should be better overall

      Thanks for the suggestion pooh! So are you saying you like camera 2’s picture better because you can see more of the street? Either camera can be adjusted, so I can re-angle them. I tried to align them both with the bottom of the picture at the same “line” on the driveway. I’m learning a lot from the comments on this video. I always thought “who cares about the street, people want to see the driveway melting” but I’m learning people like to see the “big picture” including what’s going on in the street. Anyways, I’ll be releasing the testing video soon! Thanks for your comment!!

    I liked camera 1. I could tell it was the least expensive camera because it was unable to cover all the way down the driveway but I felt the video was clearer and straighter view. Camera 2 had a curved vision that was annoying however it did have a longer view of the driveway and more of a panoramic view but the video didn't seem as clear or like a normal straight view. Anyways that's my comment. Thanks!

    • @jellybeansupra
      @jellybeansupra Год назад

      @Chris Decker that's what I plan on doing. Any concern about heating the slab to quickly and cracking it?

    • @DeckerChristopherJ
      @DeckerChristopherJ  Год назад +1

      I am not really concerned with heating it too quickly. I'm really only raising the surface temperature of the concrete to 40º-45ºF, and it does that slowly over 2-3 hours until up to temp. My system only puts out 70-80ºF glycol when first started, and eventually increases slowly to 100º. Once the return glycol coming back hits 80ºF, the heaters are turned off but the driveway still circulates until the return drops below 65ºF, at which point the heaters are fired again to add more heat. This way it's not a constant heating, it's off / on over a period of time so the slab can slowly adapt. In addition, I once read an article by Dan Foley labeled "The cold, hard truth about snowmelt systems." You'll find it if you google it. In that article he discusses how in all but commercial and industrial applications with huge boilers and pumps, it's pretty much impossible to thermally "shock" a slab. Such a huge mass of (in my case 1,600 square ft of 5" thick) concrete is in complete control, and there really is no way to raise the temperature of all of that concrete fast enough with a couple of tankless water heaters and 5/8" pex at the bottom. He is a professional (I am not), and I believe him! 😉. So far it's on its 4th winter and I do not notice any cracks that weren't there before turning it on for the first time. I guess time will tell! Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching! 😊

    • @jellybeansupra
      @jellybeansupra Год назад

      @Chris Decker thank you very much. We don't get as much snow here in Denver as you do but my driveway is sloped and faces north so it never melts. When it does melt it re-freezes at night. I think that camera 1 is hands down way better. It is so much clearer and doesn't over-smooth the image allowing you to actually see details in the reflections, license plate, etc. It is exposed a little darker so it doesn't get super overexposed near the street like camera 2 does.

    I think either would do you fine. the 2nd camera has a slightly larger field of view, so we can see all the way to the end of the driveway, giving it a slight edge on #1. if there is a difference in how they perform in blowing snow (in at least 1 previous video you had to keep cleaning the lense when snow built up on it) then the one that would prevent/reduce snow build up and/or clear snow build faster would be a bigger factor for me. otherwise on my phone screen I don't see a big difference in quality.

    Chris, your heated driveway system control panel is a work of art. Pictures of it should be considered suitable for framing.
    An Interesting comparison of your two cams. A $270 cam against a $30 WYZE cam being used for the purpose of providing a video of your driveway heating system. There were pluses and minuses (although not many) in both time lapse videos. Both cams are impressive but I couldn’t justify paying $240 more for the more expensive cam.
    I have been using WYZE cams of varying models for several years those being used to monitor the street, front and back yards, a number of bird feeders, and the interior and exterior of two Bluebird houses, home interior when on vacation, etc, and they are impressive. The newly released V3 version has a very improved low light capability.
    I’ve been wondering how much better a high priced cam would be over the WYZE cams but didn’t want to spend the money to purchase and install one to test it like you did. Thanks for settling that issue.

      Thanks Glen!! The Field of View is different between the two (wider vs smaller angles) so I tried to aim them the same, but one of them definitely shows more! 😉

    Camera 1 looks better. I can see the license plate clearer. It was not possible with cam 2.

    I personally liked camera 2. I would say camera 1 has a better quality to it as the license plate on the minivan is more legible; camera 2 has a better field of view, providing additional context to the videos. Is there a $200 dollar difference in quality? No.

    I don't know which is which, and to me, without running the videos side-by-side, though I did go back and forth a couple of times to see a specific time spot, I like video 1. Why? Because you could put the day of the week in the time stamp. Now if camera 2 can do that, but not as a default, ok, then it's a toss-up. And I appreciate you not putting in music while you are speaking. I wish the other YT hosts (Mentour Now, for example) would stop it. You added the music after you were done speaking, which is fine. Granted, not my choice of music for it, but the point is, you did not do it during your narration. I realize my analysis probably isn't really helpful, but, really, I didn't see any real differences. I'd go with the cheaper one if I had pick one. I await your announcement as to which is which.

    I don't think the different cameras make that much difference. So I would probably chose the less expensive one, and spend the money saved on some other aspect of your video creation set-up. (Or put the money toward something else altogether, maybe a trip somewhere tropical.)
